They’ve been doing live fire exercises there for decades and there has been gas infrastructure in the area as well for decades. I would be reasonably certain they’re careful about where and when they’re using munitions.

My concern in terms of planning was that the warning from Environment Canada for this event was very late considering the severity of the wind. There could be good reasons for that but that will need to be determined.

I don’t think there’s a lack of transparency here*. It’s a major incident and I think, first, it’s entirely fair to be notifying next of kin before any of the public, and, second, they need daylight to figure out exactly what happened. I’d rather accurate information than rushed speculation.

If there was a training exercise ongoing with hundreds of people then I could easily see a sudden fast moving fire causing a very large number of casualties. Also given Edmonton hospital ERs are in a constant state of over capacity an influx of critical burn patients would be a huge issue.

That said, details are scarce right now so we’ll have to wait and hear what’s reported later today. No matter what the cause this is a massive tragedy.

A decade ago I would have answered this with "much too often" as most of the time it was used it wasn't technically correct and mostly used as general attack. Nowadays though with fascism breaking out everywhere it should probably be used more.

Very few things, if any, have only one name and names themselves come a variety of types. Sometimes names have overlapping potentially contradictory meanings (I’m looking at you “fruit”). I’d say it’s important to use the right name in the right context for the right purpose but there’s usually a lot of wiggle room in there. The big thing is to avoid confusion.

That said when it comes to proper names of people, the right name is the one they choose to use, period.

As a technical point a Library is not strictly an archive and have specific procedures for the content they purchase. That said the it's definitely the case that lots of copyrighted material gets stored online. It just seems to me it goes against the spirit of the Fediverse to have an organized scraping of all the content.

It would kind of defeat the purpose of having auto-deleting posts ...

I’m not much of sports person but I’ve enjoyed watching key World Cup games at our local pub and we took some visiting family out see the Edmonton Riverhawks (West Coast League baseball) play. It was much as you described, lots of kids, socialization, and some great banter from the two Edmonton comedians and improv guys calling the game.

It's only been in the last few years I've had ongoing drug prescriptions, the first (not covered as it's considered a "lifestyle" issue) for a particular side effect of having your prostate removed, and the second, just started, to finally treat my anxiety disorder. All the eggs are unloaded into the an egg tray in the flat drawer in our fridge so not an issue. That said, from the egg tray in the fridge I tend to take them one row at a time although that can get broken up if there size differences. January through September we get heritage eggs from the University of Alberta so the sizes can vary.
