Hello Fedora Linux 45! 🎉:fedora:

Just upgraded my ThinkPad X1 Carbon from F44 to F45, and the upgrade went incredibly smoothly!

Yes, it's still pre-release software. Yes, I'm running it at my own risk. And so far? Absolutely rock solid!

Some highlights:
- Tighter security: ptrace restricted by default
- Fresh dev stack: Python 3.15, GCC 16.2 & Go 1.27
- kmscon replaces the legacy kernel console
- RPM package signatures enforced by default

Great work, Fedora Project (npub1hpw…cd0d) team! ❤️

#Fedora #FedoraLinux #KDE #Linux #OpenSource

After a package cleanup, the mail configuration pointed to a CA certificate file that no longer existed. It's fixed now.

If you were waiting for a confirmation or password reset mail, please just request it again. Sorry about that!

Tonight we're repacking the database (pg_repack) to get rid of bloat. You shouldn't notice anything.

Thanks for your patience, and enjoy your weekend! 💚

#MastoAdmin #FreeBSD

Our streaming server never decompresses untrusted Brotli data, so the risk is low. We'll update as soon as the FreeBSD package is out.

The streaming server now properly verifies the database's TLS certificate.

Rewrote our rc.d scripts the way rc.subr intends: supervisor pidfile, automatic restart after a crash, and "service restart" works on the first try. Background: https://blog.hofstede.it/freebsd-foundationals-rcd-the-service-framework-that-fits-in-your-head/

Package updates on the host and in all jails

nginx: separate cache directories, a nearby DNS resolver (thousands of DNS errors gone) and a catch-all for unknown hostnames

We retired our Tor onion service

Lots of small cleanups after a deep health check

Eliminated the IPv4 NAT for my blog today and gave the Caddy jail it's own dedicated IPv4 address from my /28 space.

Makes the firewall configuration a lot simpler and I can drop all that rdr/nat stuff.. Modern IPv6 of course, always was a routed end-to-end connection.

It's time that we finally leave that legacy IP crap behind at some point .. le sigh.

#blog #ipv4 #ipv6 #networking #firewall

Several years of Deutsche Bahn business travel taught me something unexpected: eventually you stop fighting the system and start learning its moods, failure domains, and hidden virtues.

I wrote down the practical folklore that actually helps: apps, routing habits, delay survival, seat choices, fallback lines, and the strange civilisation of the Bordrestaurant at 250 km/h.

“A Field Manual for Three Years on Deutsche Bahn”: https://blog.hofstede.it/a-field-manual-for-three-years-on-deutsche-bahn/

#travel #db #trains #bahn

#warmewende #Energiewende #FossileEnergien #heizen #Klimagerechtigkeit #depol
