It started so well, but then Simon Jenkins insists that "Speaking well means using eye contact and appropriately adjusting your tone of voice."

No, it doesn't. Those are non-verbal communication skills that are often only easy for the "neurotypicals" among us.

I'm all for dropping conic sections and differential equations for most people, but not if we still insist that staring at people should be "normal" or "good".

I'd found an old GoPro last month clearing out MRM's cupboards, so I bought an NDI box, and cobbled together a stream setup in OBS Studio based on some stuff I'd done internally before, with our sound desk wired into Reaper, and a mix I'd made with a recording of this week's service. We sorted the requisite licence to cover broadcasting the hymns on Sunday.

Was it perfect? Of course not. But it did work, it brought people together across the world, and I learnt quite a bit along the way.

It's always nice when you're able to say "yes" to people, especially when the ask is going to push you out of your comfort zone. Today, our church had it's very first live streamed service: a memorial service for a member who'd recently passed, with friends and family in New Zealand that couldn't get here to be with everyone. Two weeks ago I was asked if it was possible to stream it, and I said I'd try.

Main questions to solve:

1. Why didn't my StreamDeck pick up the OBS scenes so I could set up the buttons before hand?

2. Is it because Reaper was using ASIO that the ReaStream FX in "Broadcast" wasn't being picked up across the network? Levels were doing levels things.

3. Is it possible to automate a cross fade in Reaper when you're live? I could ride the faders if I had a proper control plane, but otherwise it's a hard mute/un-mute which isn't as nice (invert Faders on busses?)

Totally agree that the switch to Discord for support/"professional" discussion has been a massive pain. Mostly though it's been for groups that were previously on a free slack instance, so limited to about 10,000 messages or so...

Shout out to #Vodafone - my broadband expires this month, and default was to go up by about £10, quick phone call and they've moved me to Full Fibre (finally available at home!), increased the youth's data limits and reduced my overall bill by about £40 (2x Full Fibre broadband, 4x mobile contracts and 1x device).

Now, if they can just solve the mobile signal half way through my occasional commute...

Struggled through a casual X-Wing tournament today in Bromley (masked up due to whatever I'm still suffering from) with a few of us from TNX, as well as the old 186th Squadron getting back together and a few from Mando Squadron, but here's some #Caturday pics of Loushkin to help people feel better ;)

She'd obviously prefer it if I had three arms, due to the hard stare I got every time I took a drink...

We recently had a designer deliver a heavily animated site they'd vibe coded for major internal stakeholder: the problem? Somehow it didn't work on any browser on any of the PCs in the office (and the stakeholder was presenting it on a PC at a global town hall in a couple of days)...

None of our front-end Devs could work out what Cursor had done, and so ended up rewriting it from scratch.

So, we planned on binging S2 of The Night Manager, and rewatched S1 over Christmas... We're only 1.5 episodes in, and it all seems rather similar... Same sort of murder in similar locations, similar plot points around who's selling what to whom.
Perhaps we're supposed to think that, and this time it's not?

The one thing I really want AI to do is help sort my calendars out. So often my work calendar just gets meetings dumped in, why can't Copilot just be like: "he's already got a meeting there that he doesn't own, reply as tentative at best" or "oh, he owns that meeting, I'll see if I can rearrange it to fit"

Nope. It can generate the contents, but it can't actually create a file I can download. I can copy and paste it somewhere, but for that I had to download another app to create arbitrary files on android.

Seriously, what value is this giving me? None. I spent longer trying to get this rubbish to work than it took me to enter them by hand.

Why does MS think I'm going to upgrade to the Copilot version of office if it can't do this sort of thing?

What is the point of the drive to "shove copilot in everything"?

I was given a paper based list of upcoming events today and instead of entering them all by hand thought "perhaps Copilot can do that seeing as I can't get rid of the button in Outlook for Android".

Nope. First it can only work with documents (word/pdf/etc.) so scan it to pdf, it correctly parsed the events, could see where I had conflicts, but can't write toy calendar. Ok, let's generate an .ics...

Mental health tip for anyone who needs it:

Follow the #CatsOfMastodon tag.

Also, if you have access to All4 , "David Baddiel: Cat Man" on Channel 4 (UK) is quite good (although I don't understand what he's doing with his "bongos" thing).

You're welcome.

We liked it, but missed the rule about "the charging unit must move back and separate by 1” (if possible)" after melee, which made fights a bit of attrition, rather than allowing more flowing action.

Definitely makes for a fun quick game though, moreso than the attempts we'd had at KT.

Tip that might work: mix air drying clay with 50% PVA glue. Apparently it's quite messy, but might help with the cracking and curling. Was a potential recommendation from Dana Howl's latest video on her Patron. She admitted though she hasn't tried it, and uses Apoxy Sculpt with her basing roller bases.
