In case you want to vote in Alberta's upcoming referendum, and if you are an Alberta resident, you really, really should, here is where to register for a mail in ballot. It doesn't take long to apply, but don't delay as there is a limited time to return it. Voting lines are predicted to be long, and the questions written to be confusing, so it's likely the best way.

If you don't want to wear one, that's your choice, but harassing others, that's just ridiculous. We'll be paying for it in terms of reduced effectiveness of public health measures for a long time.

Potentially a dumb question, especially given how long I've been on Mastodon, and have been promoting it to people. How do I see a person's own toots? Not their boosts, replies to others, etc. Just the ones they craft with their own fingers ( if they're posting a website using a toot that's fine too). But ones they themselves toot. I thought I knew, but now that I search a friend's for his snow report, I couldn't separate all those things out. 😞

I was a 70's kid, and we got measles all the time before vaccinations were common for them, mumps too. I had never hallucinated or been sick like before measles, or perhaps even after. Mumps really sucked too. Whooping cough was common (OMG the coughing never ended!), polio was still a real scare then. And now people are scared of them, or scared of getting too many. I want all the f**king vaccines! I want vaccines for things I've never heard of!

Sarcophaga bullata, another flesh fly, used in some genetics, behavioural, chemosensory, and neuroscience research too. Another recent genus for them was Neobellieria, but I think they're back in Sarcophaga again. There have been a couple of other genera they've been put into but they keep ending up in Sarcophaga!

I rather like the idea of wastebasket taxons, as long as it's understood that's what they are. It's a way to state what we don't know which can be as important as emphatically stating we know something rather than admitting it's a bit of a guess. The genus Sarcophaga in Sarcophagidae was used like this for years, although the species I worked on, bullata, ended up in it after lots of revisions anyway! 😂
