Removing the valve cover on a GM 1.5L Turbo (LYX) engine to search for broken metal parts. The reason is because we had a vacuum pump fail which is mechanically driven and connected to the exhaust camshaft. I replaced it with a genuine GM part, and it failed again about 10 days later. For those that don’t know, a failed vacuum pump means you lose power assisted brakes on this car. You can still stop the car, but it’s entirely by how much power your leg can put into the brake pedal. Anyway, I’m just making sure there aren’t metal or composite pieces that belonged to the pumps still there that might be causing issues.<br/><br/>This car does have electronic parking brakes, which I discovered can also be used to slow the car reasonably quickly, if needed, when the vacuum pump fails.<br/><br/>A comment about plastic parts in engines.. they suck. The issue is the plastic gets brittle after a while, and I broke a PCV pipe by pulling it slightly. I can get a replacement pipe for about $53, but since PCV isn’t pushing a lot of pressure, I’ll just find a way to reconnect the two pieces. I’ll probably wrap it in electrical tape then put shrink tubing over that. Easy job, right? I&#39;ve done these many times over the years. What&#39;s different with this one (2019 Chevy Equinox) is this vehicle has an electronic parking brake system. First time I&#39;ve had to work on a car with one of those. I look up how to deal with this system and it sounds simple for those with the tools, which I happen to have; a mid-range code scanner tool which can access all the different systems onboard. I command the brake system to retract the parking brake pistons and it does so. So far so good. Except not. It retracted the piston but not far enough for me to slide it over the new pads. This turns into eventually the brake computer complaining something cryptic. Looking online it seems like maybe it&#39;s the motor gears are stripped out, or it could just be a calibration issue, but nobody can really tell me. Eventually I find that I&#39;m able to push the piston further back into the housing and reassemble the brake. Still, the brake computer is complaining, but a code scan just shows some cryptic message that&#39;s a historical message and not current, but it won&#39;t let me clear it. After having tried the parking brake calibration multiple times previously, which didn&#39;t do anything, finally this time I must have had the magic sequence of things and it runs a calibration. Then it was happy. Three hours later I&#39;m done with ONE brake. I&#39;m going to try to get the other one done tomorrow before that car leaves for a few weeks. I hooked up a Saleae Logic 8 to the I2C bus, a USB serial adapter, and told OpenCode about both. It took the reins are figured out the issue. It knew where the DTS file was and it knew how to compile it and write to the image and did all that.<br/><br/>Another I’ve started using is describing a problem I’m having with a system and let it go to town.
