As a middle-aged dude who earns most of his living through investments, I'm in full support of the Chalmers/Labor CGT/negative-gearing changes.

I've definitely taken advantage of them in the past and I will do so for as long as I can, but the 50% discount on taxable income was *WAY* too generous and was contributing to wrecking the housing market.

FWIW, I don't invest in housing (other than the one I live in), it's all super/shares/cash. This is partially due to the illiquidity and partially due to not wanting to make housing worse for others.

Went to the new Capital Brewing Lager House in the new East Trading Hall (which I think used to be Anzac Park East). I had the steak frites, which was pretty good with a nice smokey flavour and tarragon butter. The only slight let-down was the packet gravy (which just tastes of salt, MSG, corn starch and Parisian brown) - but the steak's good with the butter and you can drown your chips in the gravy. Their house lager's pretty acceptable too. The building is still a little incomplete, but it's looking OK so far.

I saw an article about how good the food options are that are associated with churches. So I went to a Vietnamese place called O BACH across the road from Bunnings in Tuggeranong and had a pretty nice banh mi. Nice crispy bun!

Because no one asked (and I couldn't find a guide online), I did a tear-down of my misfunctional prev-gen Google ChromeCast.
Things I discovered:
* The case is indeed glued around the outside edge (stabbing my left had twice in the process).
* There's a tonne of weird blue, foamy heat-transfer compound between components and heat-spreaders. This compound has a texture between Blu Tack and plasticine. They even put three globs on the *outside* of the heat spreaders.
* Given the presence of the extra thermal transfer paste and the fact the device runs a lot smoother with the case off and the heat spreadders reseated, I think there was a borderline thermal issue with this model of the device. Possibly a factor in them being EOLed in favour of the new thing.

FYI, we sold my folks' place.
The auction was a bit of a damp squib because there was only one registered bidder. I think that's a consequence of 2 things:
- Everyone's holding off on anticipation of a rate cut
- It's a "good bones" house on a big block that needs a lot of love.
We settled below reserve, but at least more than the government reckons the land is worth. A nice couple with a new little baby are going to make a home there, so that's better than someone knocking it down for a subdivision.

Oh yes, we've made several trips out to Jack Martin Scrap Metal (but there are others). Not a huge amount of bare copper, but heaps of insulated wire and brass, which is still worth quite a lot. Interestingly they've twice eyeballed the steel/iron in the ute tray and offered "about 400kg" (more like 1t the first time and 200kg the second). At 10¢/kg, is not worth quibbling.
