That has not at all been my professional experience. We've seen a slow and careful trickle of use, mostly to fix bugs and catch it in review. We have not been inundated with a mountain of slop PRs and the authors using AI have been respectful of our boundaries around use patterns and stuck around to share what they know and help others with their work.

Being progressive is about making change in the world, not being mad at the right people and scoring points online for remaining morally pure. Doing things, and doing them *well* matters.

I believe strongly that doing the right thing is, by and large, compatible with doing things well. Better organizational structures, more sustainability, compassion, diversity: these *work*. You just have to actually be willing to compete at the same damn game everyone else is playing.

The point about "effective tools" above is not just about AI, BTW. The rejection of useful, standard tools and methods goes way back. I've seen my allies reject:

- wildly superior, closed source software
- telemetry, no matter how ethical
- building a business that can, you know, pay bills
- paid advertising
- social media with superior or complementary reach
- the very notion of marketing

It's fine if you want to prioritize your own purity. Just don't pretend it's the best way to do good.

If you have any power to change this: do so! Set your ego aside, push back on top-down control, and work on fixing your processes and culture. Change the *shape* of your incentives and org, and actually reflect on what decisions are working without viewing it as a power struggle.

If you're in tech, and think that you don't have any power to change this because you're just a peon, oppressed by the capitalist overclass: go make something. Build a team, start a worker coop. It's never been easier.

If we say "building businesses is ontologically evil" and "using effective tools is ontologically evil" and "doing anything other than charity work, socialist political advocacy or being oppressed is ontologically evil", guess what?

You're willing giving up your ability to affect change in the world. You're giving up your ability to do good while feeding your family. You're pushing all of this into unpaid, volunteer labor, driving the burnout that you claim to hate.

Where I differ is that I don't view this as evidence that AI is useless. Instead, we need to take the "soft" bits of software seriously: organizational structure, product planning, quality control, consensus building, docs.

Far too much of traditional engineering culture boils down to enforcing petty power.

I'm tired of seeing people who agree with me on what the future should look like give up all of their ability to actually shape that fucking future. Of prioritizing purity over doing good. Of seeing people sit on their sidelines and snipe at their "allies" for the hard choices they have had to make, while never doing anything that would necessitate hard choices.
