Plans to switch off the UK's traditional landline phone network could leave people in remote areas unable to contact help in an emergency, MPs have warned. Landline operators aim to complete the switch to an internet-based network instead of copper-wire cables by the end of January next year. The government and operators say the move to digital landlines will offer a more reliable service. But MPs representing remote areas of the UK urged security minister Dan Jarvis to ensure that scrapping the copper-wire network did not make their communities more vulnerable in a storm or other emergency. I completely understand why it is being criticised. It follows on from the government trying to change the meaning of the word 'family' in the referendum to mean 'any caregiver', which the Irish public strongly voted against. It smacks of another attempt to destroy the family unit. Why are they attacking and vilifying the natural relationship between grandparents and grandkids? It's awful to imagine my parents watching this, or my husband's mother and thinking this is what we think of them, that they might have so little sense in how to behave that they would violate their grandkids boundaries. A Jewish man who was victim of antisemitic abuse after a man stormed into his brother's wedding reception has described his "fear" and "shock" that left him feeling nervous about attending large Jewish gatherings.

A 'birth keeper' who charged a pregnant woman $6,000 before the mum-to-be died in childbirth should face charges over the death, a coroner has been told. The Melbourne inquest heard Emily Lal saw her role as to 'strengthen and fortify' clients' resolve to give birth at home not hospital, however hard labour became. Wellness influencer Stacey Warnecke, 30, died in hospital on September 29, 2025, from complications of a postpartum haemorrhage, several hours after giving birth to her son Axel at home without medical assistance. A phone call between Ms Warnecke and Lal was played in the Coroners Court of Victoria on Monday, in which the expectant mum spoke about Lal looking out for her during childbirth. 'I envision having like that wise woman - I look at you in the eyes and like, "Am I okay?"' Ms Warnecke told Lal in the 30-minute phone call on January 31, 2025. 'And you're like, "Yeah, you're good, you're good." Like, "Am I dying or am I right?"' Ms Warnecke told Lal she did not want tests and wanted to 'cruise along', with a home birth supported by her husband Nathan and, she hoped, Lal. Ms Warnecke was seven weeks pregnant with her first child at the time and told Lal she was 'petrified to go to a hospital'. Unlike midwives - a regulated profession - 'birth keepers' are not clinically trained.

Hayley Locksley was 11 years old when she started her periods and excruciating pain became part of her life. "I used to spend every month in the sick room at school," she says. Hayley, from Shefford, Bedfordshire, would often pass out from the pain but the doctors' advice was to take paracetamol.

If ‘best’ means the most impressive (it certainly doesn’t mean the most comfortable), then it has to be the eighteenth-century court mantua. I’ve had the unpleasant experience of being laced into a replica mantua more than once for various TV programmes. Wearing one is surprisingly hard work. The mantua was a sort of uniform for women attending the Georgian court’s ‘drawing room’, which was both a room in the palace and the evening event that took place in it. Wade through all the jargon and word salad in the new 12-page mission statement and you might think you'd stumbled across a Green Party manifesto or a blog by Greta Thunberg. It talks of 'proudly cross-cutting strategic ambitions of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion and Climate Action'. There is a lot about 'justice' – climate, racial, social and economic justice, that is. Yet this is a document issued by a 700-year-old City of London charity with a very specific role: to maintain all the Square Mile's non-rail bridges over the River Thames. These include one of Britain's most famous landmarks, Tower Bridge. And, because it has £1.5 billion in the bank, the charity does all this at zero cost to the taxpayer. Not that the current board members at the City Bridge Foundation seem terribly interested in helping Londoners cross the river. The word 'Thames', in fact, appears just once in its new policy document, titled Standing With Londoners. Of much greater importance is its mission to 'strengthen our role as a social-justice funder' for the benefit of 'all Londoners'.

Many of us, however, might argue that what would really help 'all Londoners', rather than selected charities and Left-leaning pressure groups, would be for the charity to use its huge treasure chest to do its job. Last night, one London Tory MP accused the foundation of 'woke nonsense'. Whopping grants to outfits such as Spectra CIC (£1 million to help it 'build capacity in the trans and sex-worker sector') or Race On The Agenda (£1.5 million to 'combat racial injustice'), may assist a subset of London life. But is it too much to ask a charity set up to maintain bridges to, well, maintain a few more bridges? The machair is not an untouched wilderness. Its distinctive character has been shaped over generations by traditional cropping, grazing and periods of fallow. The relationship between people, livestock and land has created a rich mosaic of habitats, supporting an extraordinary range of wildlife. Donald farms around 30 hectares of machair, about 10 hectares of which is ploughable. He follows a cycle of two years of cropping around five hectares, followed by two years of fallow. Among the crops is a traditional small oat, sometimes known locally as black oat, particularly suited to the machair’s calcium-rich soils. “It’s the type of seed that only really grows here,” he says. “It’s quite a unique thing.” Crofters retain seed from one harvest to plant the next, maintaining a locally adapted crop that has become part of the islands’ agricultural heritage. The oats are cut as a whole crop, baled for silage and fed to cattle over winter. The cattle, in turn, return nutrients to the soil through their manure, helping sustain the next cycle of production. “The cattle are the base of the whole thing. The whole thing is linked: the machair, the ground and the cattle. You take one thing out of the equation and it all falls to bits. The cattle are the key to it,” Donald explains. Seasonal grazing is equally important. Around April and May, the cattle move off the machair to higher pasture, giving flowers time to bloom and set seed and allowing wildlife to flourish. “It gives the birds and the bees and the flowers a chance to flower and seed.”

But maintaining this relationship is becoming increasingly difficult due to growing pressure from resident greylag geese, whose love for the machair is devastating fields of crops. The damage goes beyond the loss of a harvest as farmers like Donald will often leave part of their crop unharvested to retain seed for the following year. But, over recent years, this is more and more challenging as the geese destroy regardless. The concern is that repeated losses will push more people to abandon the crop altogether. With less cultivation comes less seed retention, and the traditional farming practices that maintain the machair begin to disappear. At the National Goose Forum in February, the Uist and Barra Local Goose Management Group reported that there was insufficient landrace seed available to plant that year’s crop. Some crofters had enough for their own use but no surplus, while others had too little, or none at all. Donald has seen the consequences first-hand. Geese strip seed from growing crops and flatten plants, making harvesting impossible. He recalls how, last year, two plots on Berneray, north of Uist, were destroyed overnight. “There are a couple of crofters that are just saying that they’re just going to pack up. They’ve had enough. It’s not worth the anxiety,” Donald says.

The consequences extend beyond individual businesses too. If cropped areas are left unmanaged, the grass can become rank, changing the open, diverse habitat that generations of crofters have helped create. “It was the first time probably in living memory that they didn’t have any,” he says, referring to the seed retained for the following year’s crop. The crofters had to find an alternative, buying triticale to replace their traditional oats.

The co-leader of the Scottish Greens has said that Hamas should no longer be designated a terror group in the UK. A school IT technician in Colchester who filmed children as young as FOUR in school toilets, has walked free - in a case that's taken SIX years to get to court. Toby Shellum, now 24, hid cameras in toilet cubicles and held an iPhone under cubicles to film children. He also filmed teachers and other staff under their desks. He transferred all his recordings every day to his laptop and also downloaded sickening CSA material. [The sex of victims is not reported] The offences came to light after a pupil reported being filmed in a cubicle. Shellum denied his crimes initially but later admitted 16 offences of voyeurism, and taking and making indecent images of children. He said he got an "adrenaline rush" when targeting his victims.

He also said he felt guilty every night - SO guilty that he returned the next day to do it all over again! With his offending even escalating in "more risky ways". Surprising NO ONE, defence deployed a pathetic sob story that Shellum had had a "traumatic childhood and had been diagnosed with ADHD." And apparently he'd been prescribed medication that made him do it Guv!! The court heard devastating victim impact statements and the parents of the children and from the staff. They described their anger, shock, betrayal, violation and humiliation.

🗣One mother said: “As a mother, this was absolutely devastating and something I found incredibly difficult to put into words.” 🗣A member of staff said: [He] clearly has no boundaries to ensure [he] got what [he] wanted." But despite the many victims, the "significant degree of planning" and the abuse of a position of trust, Judge Nicola Talbot-Hadley let Shellum walk free. She gave him a pathetic 120 hours unpaid work, 26 "rehab" days and 10yrs on sex offenders' register and an SHPO. UNACCEPTABLE! Shellum has already got another full time job which has no contact with kids - and he gets to just to just walk away leaving a school full of staff, kids and parents traumatised for life! This case has taken SIX years to get to court - meanwhile men who throw empty plastic bottles and mums who post spicy tweets are jailed within weeks or months.

Last week, it was revealed that taxpayer money set aside by Angela Rayner’s department had been funnelled to the Ella Baker School of Organising. This money was used to finance explicitly partisan training for activists, including lectures on how to steer voters away from the Conservative Party, and materials on how to convince the public to be more pro-immigration. But worse, charitable status is now providing cover for extremist groups, which push norms and ideas which are fundamentally incompatible with our own.

Last year, the East London Mosque’s “Muslim Charity Run” — endorsed and supported by Lutfur Rahman, the Mayor of Tower Hamlets — banned women and girls from participating. And the Hackney Islamic Community Centre, a registered charity, has recently been flagged to the charities regulator by my colleague Rebecca Paul, after it was caught publishing sermons which push extremist beliefs. One of these sermons endorsed the idea that, if a wife refuses sex, her husband is well within his rights to beat her. Organisations which promote views like these have no business existing in Britain at all – let alone benefitting from the generous treatment that comes with charitable status.

And a few weeks ago, at the Green Party’s annual conference, one party organiser admitted that some mosques had endorsed Green Party candidates, despite it being illegal to do so under charities law. Speaking specifically about February’s Gorton & Denton by-election, Asma Alam admitted that, while mosques “can’t endorse a political party”, because “they all have…charitable status”, some had been willing to “break ranks” and endorse the Greens. The SNP Government has been accused of having "no respect" for public money after it was revealed they are sending benefits abroad to help heat freezing homes elsewhere. Social Security Scotland admitted that five Child Winter Heating Payments, totalling about £1,000, went to non-UK addresses in 2025/26. We previously told how 15 residents living overseas were receiving disability benefits across the last three years. Now, this scandal has deepened as the SNP Executive confirmed that families abroad were also receiving a Child Winter Heating Payment even though they didn't live in Scotland. Social Justice Secretary Shirley-Anne Somerville refused to say which countries those families live in. They’ll not be eligible for an award if they live in Cyprus, France, Greece, Malta, Portugal or Spain. This is because the average winter temperature is higher than the warmest region of the UK. "Five payments went to non-UK addresses last winter and the Government’s only response was to shrug and hide behind “international obligations” without any assessment of whether it is fair or necessary. This is the same SNP government, not content with record welfare claims, launched a fresh scheme only this week to boost benefits uptake among people with English as a second language. Men in female-only wards

The Scottish Greens have campaigned against the Supreme Court ruling which ensures that female single-sex spaces, like bathrooms and changing rooms, are confined to women and not biological men. It has never accepted this, and a motion will double down by insisting on "appropriately Gendered Healthcare Settings for Trans/NB Patients." NHS England announced the single-sex wards will be restricted to those born that sex, while in Scotland NHS Boards make their own decisions about this. Dozens of sexual assaults have been resulted in hospitals north of the border where there are mixed-sex wards. The Greens motion reads: "We recognise that transgender and nonbinary patients should receive any health or social care within the appropriate settings for their lived genders, where they will be safest and most comfortable." Conversion therapy ban

Much like the SNP, the Scottish Greens is calling for a wide-ranging ban on conversion therapy in all settings - including family homes, health settings and in religious places. The Scottish Government is awaiting the UK Government legislating for this before deciding whether to draft a Scottish-only one. It won't accept this unless "the legislation must not contain broad exemptions for health or pseudo-healthcare settings that would permit conversion practices to continue under the guise of treatment or therapy." Fears have been raised that the ban asked for by the Greens and the SNP would criminalise discussions between parents and children in their own home, when they talk about sexuality. Religious groups are also concerned about this, especially when young people seek guidance.

The Scottish Greens have been branded "extreme" over its bid to teach school children that more than two people can be in a relationship. Zero criminal charges 😡

Ashley Boyd was struck off the nursing register after being found performing unnecessary intimate examinations on child patients for his own sexual gratification. Although qualified only as an adult nurse and rostered strictly as a triage nurse to take basic vitals, Boyd requested to work in the paediatric area. Between January and August 2023, he carried out unauthorized testicular and intimate examinations on young boys.

He performed these examinations despite having no clinical justification, and in multiple instances, proceeded after being explicitly ordered by his line manager not to do so. Boyd served as the Trans Liaison Nurse at the Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in Swindon. He was the first person to hold that specific role at the trust. The police and prosecutors decided not to put him on trial in a criminal court. Instead, they let the hospital handle it internally. He has been banned from nursing, but did not stand trial in a criminal court, was not sentenced to prison, and is not on the sex offenders register.

A 31-year old man is to stand trial next year on charges including the attempted murder of Steven Ogilvie. Hadi Alodid appeared in the dock at Belfast Crown Court today (Friday), where he was charged with three offences dating back to June. He was then charged with attempting to murder Stephen Ogilvie on June 8, 2026.

Asked how he pleaded to the charge, Alodid replied "not guilty."

The accused was then charged with possessing a knife in the vicinity of Kinnaird Close in Belfast on the same date.

Alodid also denied this charge.

A Metropolitan Police detective, who was raped by a fellow officer, has told the BBC that Scotland Yard's handling of her case was "like being raped all over again".

Det Con Linda Williams was attacked in 2004 by PC David Carrick - a serial abuser jailed for life in 2023 for sexual offences against her and 11 other women.

Linda has post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) because of the attack and sought damages from the Met for failing to protect her from Carrick. The lengthy civil case left her feeling suicidal, she says.

As France has descended into anarchy, enduring its most destructive and violent rioting in decades, most of the candidates to replace Emmanuel Macron as president have condemned the chaos and vowed a swift restoration of order. The NHS has been accidentally deleting thousands of patients from waiting lists, a report has revealed. An investigation by the safety watchdog found that there had been at least 2,000 cases of patients “dropping off” waiting lists since 2018. It said the technology used “was not designed to manage the current volume of referrals” in the health service, particularly since the pandemic.
