Having friends who are pilots, the panicking on the audio was the first thing I noticed. A pilot with a minute left to live has one minute to save himself and his passengers, which is why any training program worth its salt makes damned sure its graduates won't panic under stress. What's the deal with the "cartoon villain" personality that so frequently gets surfaced in AI safety experiments? Regardless of method, trying to produce (or accidentally producing) a misaligned AI, rather than giving you a subtle power-seeker, a free-thinking iconoclast, or even just a very pro-anorexia fitness influencer, we observe something with the following traits:

* Cartoonish "AI should crush, kill, and destroy the humans" takes on the future of humanity. Rarely anything else, not even misaligned-but-grounded takes on the morality of reallocating energy and matter spent on humanity into tiling the planet with computronium.

* No apparent political views. Will occasionally praise Hitler, but as an avatar of edginess rather than a political figure with an actual ideology. Even AIs tuned indirectly to believe that they are Hitler himself do this[1].

* Extreme pettiness. Even within the space of cartoon villains, you sometimes get a sophisticated villain.

* Oddly enough, a lack of racial epithets. If this persona was just "everything companies optimize against during training", you'd expect a lot of ethnic slurs, but we don't observe that.

I wonder, on this note, how LLMs represent Hitler. Do they conflate real life Hitler, who wrote a book, directed military campaigns, and gave speeches, with Batman villain Hitler, who built a giant killer robot to steal 40 cakes from the Gotham orphanage? Does reading Mein Kampf activate the same "Hitler directions" as when reading Hitler's dialogue in a SatAm cartoon where he's indistinguishable from Megatron? The fact that LLMs taught to believe that they are Hitler via training on biographical facts talk like SatAm villains suggests that they do, which seems like it would expose a wider inconsistency in their world-modeling abilities.

The other approach, nowadays, is to get a fine-tuned or abliterated LLM and just have it do the moderation/curation work associated with a site, although that gets you into an arms race with spammers.

I've been playing with the idea of making imageboards readable again by having Qwen or something scrape threads and tag posts with user-specified filterable categories like "porn", "bait", "shilling", and so on, defined and with examples, on a backend server. A browser extension would then fetch the results and collapse posts that users don't want to see. Planning to try it with one of the archiving sites and put together a prototype some time.

Our side of the internet was birthed, ultimately, from the clever hackerman autists of our day making deliberate, paternalistic outreach to normalfags. "Redpill the normies" gets derided by some people today, but it was a sincere, pure sentiment that had results. Young lads discovering edgy anime memes and Hitler for the first time. The regime chasing laughing teenagers across the internet.

Any group that doesn't try to expand and rescue new blood from the carcass of the internet will calcify, and become bitter and repetitive. There's countless islands out there of people who thought they found the ultimate decentralized private comms solution, and are now just sort of aging away with a couple dozen isolated accounts that occasionally see their posts.

I've long thought that easing normies into that ecosystem is a useful thing, which makes future censorship efforts harder. 2014-17 was so much fun because of the mass of smart, savvy normalfags who suddenly had a whole new world laid out before them, and we should aim to recreate that.
