Software encodes a model of the world—but the world changes. Thus, society needs software to change. This requires maintenance.

The reality is that 70% of all software running in production is FOSS (Synopsis, 2020). FOSS has won, and is bigger than you think. Yet, FOSS in the vast majority of cases is “one person” and 60–85% of FOSS is a hobby (Tidelift, 2024)—and there is no link to the criticality of a package.

#GUADEC2026 #GUADEC #GNOME

2026-07-17T09:51:29Z https://nostr.now/nevent1qqswhzpkuzx69aruk7h9g57c2z9scjzcmg4cjnh3auvx2d7khtlhmrgzyph3zs8mzyn2pjpdp2y8rg758ay9k8vx39k0ptwn5axy33wu96wzqp6vc3v Thomas Depierre presenting the keynote “From Swords to Plowshares” at GUADEC, exploring the model of FOSS maintainership in society.

“All maps are wrong, some are useful.
