In reply to nevent1q…wk70
_________________________

... Having double and triple checked my code, read multiple blog posts and the source of three different tools on Github, I was getting the feeling I was overlooking something obvious.

On a lark I decided to try Chromium's default hard coded password 'peanuts' instead of the one I found in KWallet.

Oh dear. That worked. 😬

      So, I decided to try and decrypt my Chromium stored passwords.

Found the 'Login Data' sqlite3 DB. Found a Chromium secret in the KDE wallet. Found some online code samples...

Except of course they didn't work.

OK, the first code sample I emulated assumed Chromium on Windows, which uses AES in GCM mode. Turns out on Linux they use CBC? Fixed that, tried again. Nope.

Ah, apparently they stretch the password with PBKDF2. Fine, fine. Done.

Still no dice...

      Ooh, Thunderbird are going to offer some cloud services, built in an open sourcey way! This could be very good.

https://www.forbes.com/sites/jasonevangelho/2025/04/01/finally-mozilla-thunderbird-takes-on-gmail-with-new-email-service/

We just need an EU-hosted/managed instance or three...

I wonder who I should pitch to, to convince them that https://passcrow.org/ is a thing they should be interested in, use and participate in?

      Yesterday, for reasons best left unstated, I invented a technique for combining #bash and #Python into a single file.

The motivation was to have something a bit more powerful than the #! to decide which installed Python to use.

The magic is in line two:

#!/bin/bash
""""true"
# bash sees this, python ignores it
if [ -e /path/to/file ]; then
exec python3 "$0" "$@"
else
echo "OMG, something is missing"
exit 1
fi
"""
# begin python fun!
from thing import python_stuff
python_stuff()
