Time to pick some peppers!

The Sugar Rush (2nd image; orange) are sweet and slightly less hot than jalapeños, so I'm thinking about making cowboy candy with those.

The Carolina Reapers (1st image; red with stingers) may become a pepper sauce. I'm still deciding.

Not sure what to do with the few Indonesian peppers that have fruited so far.

The Purple Cayenne peppers (the 4th one where they're kind of a mix of red and purple—which is their green state), I'm probably just going to dehydrate and make cayenne powder out of it since fuck knows I use enough of that. Might be worth freezing a few of those so I can put rings into chili.

I also have two shepherd pepper and a mysterious unlabelled pepper plants that are still alive and I'm curious to see how long I can keep that going. I think I'm going to invest in some of that grow light rope instead more of the lamps.

The lamps are great because they can be adjusted to whatever height they need to be, from about 20 cm to 60 cm. I think the ropes might give me a little bit more versatility for different types of plants.

Anyway, I'm starting to set up my winter gardening. I'm taking the day off to enjoy the sunshine and get as much done as possible.

I have been spent the last couple of days doing end of season garden tasks. It's nice to be able to take advantage of working from home (I'm also on call for legal support) and some warm daytime temps.

Tasks included: final harvesting of beans, cutting back the tomato plants to the soil, preparing some soil amendments, collecting the garden accessories like tomato cages steaks clips &c. and harvesting amaranth seeds.

BEANS 🫘

I tend to separate my beans into dry beans and green beans—even when the beans in question are purple.

For the ones that I'm saving as seeds I drop a couple of pods into an organza bag with the label. The rest I just kind of throw in a big pile to be beaten and used all together. I'm too busy; I'm not going to worry about only having the white beans for baked beans or whatever. It's all going to be multicoloured bean stew or chili.

I don't think I mentioned that I tend to grow the beans in the potato bags once the potatoes are harvested. Once they are done growing, I just cut the plants back to the soil rather than pulling them out. This way, the roots can can help replenish some of the nitrogen over the winter as they break down. (I also have made the Ultimate Soil Amendment blend for heavy feeders like potatoes and tomatoes, but we'll get back to that later.)

Additionally, I am putting the pods (the dry outer husks) into the blender to break them down so that they can be put in the plant pots as well to help add nutrition back.

I leave the shelled beans in an organza bag for a few days to dry out fully, just in case.

Dang. I have some other advice to share about cleaning your plant labels and steaks and stuff so that they last longer, but I may not have time to do the second part of this thread immediately. Maybe later tonight after I finish a couple of indoor tasks.

I can't decide whether or not to take the meeting. I guess I could at least find out how much money he thinks this case is worth.

I on the other hand, I think there will be no payments forthcoming, based on the fact she had to be garnished to pay costs of a remarkably low number.

So yesterday, there was a vague threat of temperatures dropping to within frost range, so we decided it was a good time to pull as many of the bigger green tomatoes as possible.

So I clipped back as many of the tomato plants as made sense to grow hydroponically for the last leg. Then we filled one of the baskets in the afternoon, and THEN I went out to LO at a protest and dinner, which left us hunting for tomatoes in the dark when I got back.

Now that it's light again, it's wild just how many very large tomatoes we missed last night while hunting with a flashlight. 1 star. I do not recommend this technique.

I'm also very glad to see that it didn't quite get down to frost levels last night, and that the decision to leave the smaller tomatoes to see if they would have a few days to get bigger was a good call.

I wish I had the time today or tomorrow to cut back the empty vines for the compost and cluster my remaining tomato plants so that I can do a poly-tunnel type cover for them, I've got to finish a bunch of work today for a meeting at 5:00, and tomorrow is the Grassy Narrows River Run, so that's totally shot. I barely have time to put the pepper plants back out in the sun.

Oh yeah, shit, tomorrow picking up two full bushels of San Marzano tomatoes, so I'm going to have to process those Thursday overnight.

Sleep? Who needs sleep.

Wandering over to get a bubble tea after a long day.

Started with a bastard cat deciding I needed to be awake at 7:30. And ended with dealing with a lot of post rain tomatoes, which, in moderation is a good thing, but in yesterday's quantities not so much.

I've got cracking on some of the tomatoes, but was lucky enough to avoid it on the great majority, mostly because I tend to pull tomatoes off at the break point, when they start blushing rather than waiting for them to fully ripen on the vine.

The mushroom basket tomatoes are extremely prolific and the extra water weight was threatening to snap some of the branches right off.

I'm also questioning the wisdom of buying the GREEN organza bags. Sure, it probably does fool the birds and rodents into thinking those tomatoes aren't ripe. But I don't actually leave them on the vine until they're ripe anyway, except when I CAN'T TELL that they're ripe because they've got green organza bags covering them.

Anyway, ended up with three very close to fully ripe of the Alice's Dream tomatoes. Damn, they're gorgeous. Definitely growing them again next year, regardless of how they taste. Which was actually pretty good for the first one, but I haven't tasted these three yet so 🤷🏾‍♀️

This should help remineralize the soil in the pots my tomatoes are in.

Everything, actually, but especially the tomatoes. I originally started down this rabbit hole by looking for options to help the San Marzanos by more closely mimicking the soil they grow in in italy.

I was going to dump the pots at the end of the growing season, then combine the existing soil with fresh perlite, biochar (which I'm about to make with a big chunk of tree that fell a few weeks ago), compost, and this, but apparently I should just scratch a half-cup of this into the soil now, cut the tomato tops off when they're done for the season (in a few weeks), and then do the refresh in the spring once the roots have had a chance to break down and become nutrients for the soil.

Clearly I'm having peas for dinner. And tomatoes. So many tomatoes. I feel like gardening is somehow like childbirth. Do I remember at the end of this the Panic of having to deal daily with a glut of produce? No all I remember is the satisfaction of having hundreds of jars of canned tomatoes to use over the next 8 to 10 months.

I don't even seem to remember the struggle that is trying to figure out which of the ten varieties of tomatoes that look pretty much identical once they're no longer on the vine, so I can save the seeds properly. (Which is probably why I have about 10 plants at this point called "unknown tomato" or "green shouldered deep red tomato".)

Tonight, to use up some of these tomatoes, I'm going to be making marinara sauce to go with calamari. Don't know what I'm doing with the peas.

I also have peaches and pears to can from the market yesterday.

Month from now, I'm not going to remember any of this. It's just wild to know.

Using these little organza bags for my produce is weird.

When I'm putting them on the tomatoes or other veggies, it feels like I'm putting a bag over someone's head and taking them to a black site.

And when I remove them to access the ripe fruit underneath, it feels like taking a bride's veil off her face.

But they work, so I ordered more.

Been a busy few days!
Just finished a meeting and I'm about to go into another training at 6, but at least this time it's online.

One of the best parts about being able to work from home is taking your breaks outside, checking how things are coming along, and getting a chance to do a little bit of harvesting of some goodies. Stuff is coming in pretty fast and furious at this point.

Having some issues with rodents.
Little fuckers are sampling all kinds of produce. I can't remember the last time I actually got one of the strawberries when I see them going right.

Also I think it's raccoons that are destroying the squash. (And now of course, I have another mental image of guess who with their face on the ground clawing at my pumpkins with the raccoons.)

Anyway, I just ordered more of the organza bags to protect what I can. Ordered basalt volcanic dust as well, but that's not supposed to arrive for a few weeks.

That's the thing about container gardening: the plants really deplete the nutrients in the soil quickly. This year at the end of the season I'm planning to put the volcanic dust in each of the pots to shore up the nutrient levels for next year.

I made myself some makeshift corn shoot bags, because I'm not sure that my last strategy of using old cups is actually keeping the pollen off of the tassels. I guess we'll find out if I actually get any Mexican truffles instead of just corn.

Yesterday, my weird, resentful stalker posted a REQUEST FOR TIPS on MY WHEREABOUTS, because she suspected me of... aiding a homeless encampment.

At least she didn't offer a literal bounty, as she has in the past.

For the past couple of years she's been trying to pretend like my calling the two of them following me around the city, following people they think might be meeting up with me, lurking outside a places where they expect me to be, was somehow DARVO, and she was actually the victim of the stalking.

I feel like there needs to be a word for a person who consistently DARVOs the word DARVO. Because she's that.

The absolutely-normal, nothing-to-see-here request was accompanied by stills from an Instagram post that mentioned none of the names of the targets she's entranced by, and was posted by an account she'd have no reason to assume I would be featured on.

I can only imagine this means she has been endlessly scanning all kinds of people's videos for the Sa'd, sad hope that she might see me sometime.

As though I'm a celebrity she's obsessed with. (I mean, dressing up as me was a pretty good clue.) I've said before that she's like a 14 year old girl that feels compelled to say my name regularly, because it makes our relationship real or something.

But it's good to see her come right out in the open and admit to the stalking at last. I guess.

I inoculated Painted Mountain corn, and Tuscarora White corn.

The raccoons absolutely decimated the peaches and cream, and I don't seem to have any nubs yet on either the Stained Glass corn or the red Aztec corn.

Now I need to cover the ones I inoculated so that they don't end up also being pollinated. Pollination apparently kills the fungus or something. 😞

Or rather, the items in the first picture maybe some weird mutation, because the plant is the right size for the dwarf tomatoes, but I was expecting red tomatoes and these are clearly not, and I didn't plant anything else that would correspond to these. All of the white or cream Tomatoes I planted were either indeterminate or a much larger determinate plant, not a dwarf.

Those three tomatoes in the first picture should all be the same. That is they all came from seeds for Little Sicily slicer tomatoes (which are really more of a cocktail tomato/ very large cherry tomato). They produce very compact plants that could be grown in seven or eight inch pots, as long as you keep the soil moist and enriched obviously.

If you like the universe heard me telling people that I don't usually grow red tomatoes, and thus this weird mutation was born. Definitely going to keep the seeds and see if they end up being true to the parent.

I wasn't even growing white tomatoes last year so I don't know how they could have crossed pollinated with anything 🤷🏾‍♀️

Anyway, picture 2 is a series of yellow cherry tomatoes: White Currant, Orange Hat (!), Gold Nugget. Picture 3 is a Terracotta tomato that I bought at the farmer's market in order to acquire the seeds. Picture 4 is just some random tomatoes I picked yesterday.

I found a Canadian company that manufactures mason jar lids.

I really wish you could just pick them up in stores, but the first time purchase discount plus ordering 200 of them neutralized the shipping cost, and they work out to a little $0.50 each, which is about 25 cents less per item than the cheapest rate in stores (for wide mouth lids).

This year I'm planning to do all of my tomatoes in wide mouth jars, though the sauces &c. will be in the regular size jars.

Does anybody do that thing where you truncate tomato trusses?

Not for cherry tomatoes, obviously, but for larger varieties where the first tomato on the truss will wait for the last one to grow before beginning to ripen, so you cut off everything after the 3rd or 4th tomato.

I'm considering it with a couple of varieties from cocktail tomato size up. The biggest tomato in the first picture has actually been that size for about 2 weeks now, but because there are so many other tomatoes on that truss, it's just hanging on before deciding to go ripen.

I think it would psychologically be easier for me to chop off things that are just flowers as opposed to baby tomatoes.

Taking a break from writing another goddamned report to discover my hyper-fixated stalker is lying about me again. She knows full well that I am requested to be at protests by people anticipating police malfeasance.

Stating that I am responsible for the actions of HUNDREDS of Toronto organizers is not only disingenuous and misinformation, it is stochastic terrorism.

And yes, I do believe the word "stalking" is in order. 5 years of it.

As the pair of you function as a unit: since you post his footage on your account — for money — under your own name; since approaches to my contacts were done under your business name; you are going to wear it all when it goes on the public record.

I feel like It has escaped you that what I do as a legal observer is: document things. I'm very good at documenting things. Maybe a little too good since there's so much to sort through. Highlights include:

Following friends around in case they might be meeting up with me.

Intentionally going places you might find me, even though it's not actually a protest.

Throwing your actual profession in the toilet so that you can stalk people full time. Well that might be the giveaway, though.

For anyone else who may be reading this, and those numbers will be few because I've chosen to post it on a platform that is not search engine indexed, I do the work because I’ve seen what police do to Black, Indigenous, and racialized people at actions. Because liberation struggles are connected. Because someone needs to watch the watchers.

Not because I’m some shadowy puppet master trying to get at some random grandiose, self-absorbed woman I didn't meet until YEARS after I started legal observing.

Unlike her fixated self, I have a full, interesting, and varied life with many things I do for the sheer joy of it, and a few things I do because I need money.

I don't know (because I refuse to experience it), but I imagine I would be livid if someone intruded on my thoughts multiple times a day when I should be doing something else.

It's annoying enough when somebody sends me a screenshot and brings her to mind. I can't imagine it happening unbidden.

And hell! She actually presents a PHYSICAL threat to my person. Her spouse has assaulted me.
Her lies and obsession are aimed at getting me hurt.

I just say mean things now every now and again, and her brain is broken over it. Absolutely dysfunctionally broken. It obviously couldn't have started in a good place.

And what would I even do to "ruun" her life at this point? It's already pretty much hell, from my viewpoint.

Imagine spending all your time with that crew. 😬 I'd have to self-medicate and keep myself numb, too, if I was expecting to maintain that level of interaction.

It ain't my fault that she is anhedonic and can't experience joy.

I totally forgot the other part of the Tomato Saga.

I bought a package of 20 Dark Stripe micro-dwarf tomato seeds, and planted five, hoping four would germinate, and if all five did then I'd figure out who was getting the spare.

Well I don't know what I did, but none of the first five actually germinated. In the meantime, I decided that I would germinate four for myself separately, and then share the five with the five people I was growing balcony tomatoes for.

Also, at the point I had my very annoyed moment, none of my four had come up either. So, I decided that the pack might be a bunch of duds.

So I thought, "I'm just going to put them ALL in a pot and see if anything comes up."

Wouldn't you know it.
Not duds. Just slow to germinate.

So now I feel like Oprah: You're getting micro dwarf tomatoes! You're getting micro-dwarf tomatoes!

And of course, now I don't have original seeds for next year.

I bought liquid culture yesterday after taking a year and a bit off from growing mushrooms, after burning myself out by juggling 19 different varieties. I may have a problem with being sensible when it comes to growing things.

(I currently have 60-something varieties of tomatoes on the go, and I just ordered two more types of micro-dwarf tomatoes. More on that later.)

I ordered some old standbys, including some stropharia rugosoannulata for making a nice wine caps bed for the friend who lets me put things in his yard that I have no way to grow in a pot. (To be clear I grow the wine caps in pots, this is a thank you.)

I also got Blewits for him (and for me), Chestnut mushrooms, Black Pearl oyster mushrooms, and *so excited* Corn Smut.

We did a corn experiment¹ in his yard last year, which is when I learned that skunks can climb things(!), and not just corn stalks, the damn fence if I startle them.

Well this year I'm laying down a few extra peaches and cream corn to see if I can get huitlacoche² happening.

While I was ordering things, I also picked up two more varieties of micro dwarf tomatoes. Because apparently eight ISN'T enough.

So now I have two more attempts at brownish micro-dwarf tomatoes: Loi's Baby Tiger³ and Pa's Pride⁴. Both are actually just red with green stripes. I am very sad still that I cannot get the F1 Cocoa into Canada.

I haven't done a garden update in a bit, so this is going to be a thread.

1. Raspberries

I keep meaning to do a post about container gardening with canes and how you get the most fruit off of a limited number of them.

This week I purchased a golden raspberry to go with my black, wild, red, and the weird deep burgundy one (which was also *supposed* to be a black one) that I bought probably a decade ago.

(I also have the wild raspberries because a friend of mine was trying to get me one of the black canes from his patch, but captured a wild one instead. My quest for black raspberries had been an ongoing thing until last year.)

Anyway, people see my raspberry canes coiled round and round and wonder whether I should have cut them off instead of letting them grow really long, or do I let them grow extra long because there are so few of them in the pots?

Well the first time I did that, that was definitely my motivation. It was a year where only two canes came in, but they kept growing and growing to like 15 ft long, so I looped them around and around when they were green, in order to be able to manage them.

But the next year, I learned that:
When you bend a fruit cane (and it works with my gooseberries as well, see the last photo of the set), the plant sends off mini branches with multiple flower sets, which become fruit. It's weird, but it's true.

Apparently, bending or arching raspberry canes disrupts the natural plant hormones (auxins). When canes are strictly vertical, the main tip of the cane dominates growth, suppressing the buds below it. Bending the cane horizontally or into an arch forces these dormant side buds (lateral nodes) to wake up.

I'm not sure if that's why people used to cut the tips of their raspberry plants off, but that used to be the advice given to growers. 🤷🏾‍♀️

Anyhoo, I look forward to feasting on raspberries in another month or so, so I won't get golden ones until next year.

Man that sun is really beating down. Inside taking a break, so I may as well post about my new sunchokes.

All it takes is a food safe container (I believe those are recycling numbers one, four, and five, but you should definitely check that out yourself), a drill bit or a large nail, and a lighter or, in my case, a creme brulee torch.

Keep the drill bit or nail and make holes in the bottom for drainage. But not too many holes or it won't hold any liquids. The number of holes is inversely proportionate to the size of the holes.

I like to bury the tubers fairly far down so that squirrels and other bastards will not dig them up. And then I cover the entire pot with a layer of mulch. That both helps keeps the moisture in, and prevents splash back from spreading any disease in the soil onto the plant.

I also have a Rubbermaid bin that I converted and put a Egyptian walking onion in with them. I put the Red Fuseau sunchokes in that bin.

The extra tubers are going into a friend's yard. And no, this year it's not a surprise. Though maybe some of the pumpkins will be.

(Apparently I'm going to have to fix the alt tags afterwards because the photos are being weird. )

Today is seedling thinning day.

I over planted because I'm never guaranteed of germination rates, which means that there are some things I have way too many of, and some things only one of them sprouted.

I also planted extras of the micro-dwarf tomatoes because I feel like everybody who has even just a little bit of space and enough sunshine, should be growing them. So I have some for my aunt's balcony, I have some for A-Dub 🥝 (npub1uc6…xmg0) and a couple other people, plus mine.

I think those are the first ones I'm going to transplant. It is definitely not the time to put it them outside yet, so I don't know if I'm going to hand them off to people yet unless they promise to keep them indoors until the May 2-4 weekend.

I'm still looking for a true brown micro-dwarf cherry to go with Orange Hat, Rosy Finch, House, and Blaue Zimmertomate. I found a couple of American seed sellers with what looks to be a true brown, but I don't think I can get them across the border. 😞

Anywho, I can tell which ones are my favourite tomatoes because some of them, even though there are plenty to share, I just don't want to give the seedlings away. Green Grapes is at the top of that list. Though I have six or seven of those so I really should give a couple of those away if I want to keep many of the other ones.

(I know most people snip the extra seedlings off, but I always untangle them in put them in separate pots to give away.)

In my defence, I'm not just planting these for myself.

Many of the micro varieties (Rosy Finch, House, Golden Nuggets, Heartbreakers, and now Orange Hat and Blaue Zimmertomate) will find homes with people who only have balconies. You'd be amazed how many cherry tomatoes they produce, and in flushes. I'm hoping the two new varieties I'm adding to the selection will follow the trend.

I invariably end up giving seedlings to family, friends, and neighbours. And kind of everybody I know.

I promised to start seedlings for an org.

This amount is absolutely excessive.

I was let loose in the seedbank on top of my tried and true seeds. I bought a few because they sounded interesting and I wanted to try them. I'm pretty sure this is more than twice the number I had last year.

I don't know. I lost my damned mind thinking about all the different colours and types of tomatoes. Like: I've been growing Black Boar tomatoes for a few years and they're very tasty, and then the seed bank had something called Pink Boar! So I grabbed a pack. And I've never grown white tomatoes, so now I have three varieties.

I don't actually have anywhere to put 64 types of tomatoes, so a lot of these I'm not even going to get to see. Maybe.

Ideas are coming to me.
I feel like I've got friends with yards who like tomatoes, and I can probably get at least one off a plant from them.

All I know is that the big seed tray that last year had tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, eggplants, and more, is just tomatoes this year.

I'm not gonna complain about having too much paid work, but the URGENT ITEMS list is making it a challenging to get to the IMPORTANT ITEMS list.

In January of 2017, six individuals —Ibrahima Barry (39 years old), Mamadou Tanou Barry (42 years old), Khaled Belkacemi (60 years old), Aboubaker Thabti (44 years old), AbdelKrim Hassane (41 years old), and Azzedine Soufiane (57 years old)— were shot and killed, and 19 others wounded in an attack on a mosque by Alexandre Bissonnette in Quebec City.

In September of 2020 International Muslim Organization Mosque caretaker Mohamed Aslam Zafis (58 years old) had his throat slit outside of the Rexdale area mosque in Ontario.

Then in June of 2021 the Afzaal family in London, Ontario, was struck by a pickup truck while taking a leisurely walk. Salman, (46 years old), Talat, (74 years old), Madiha (44 years old), and Yumna (15 years old) were all killed. Fayez (9 years old) survived the attack, having lost his father, mother, sister, and grandmother.

Since we went off on our own, Orange Hats has expanded our legal support functions well beyond legal observing.

We are currently compiling a comprehensive list of what we do, both for the granting process and our site. Inl would say 75% of what we do is effectively invisible.

At Protests

• Quick KYR Training;
• Watch and document cops' behaviour;
• Arrange for legal support if there are arrests.

At Police Stations

• Arrest/Jail support (function as the point of contact between legal team and those awaiting for arrestees to be released);
• Accompany people when they need to get fingerprints and photos taken, or to do turn-ins.
• Accompany people when they have to file a report.

In Court

We attend court or just accompany people to the courthouse, typically during the self-rep stages, to help manage expectations and provide moral support, as well as to help navigate the system where appropriate.

Other

• Facilitate workshops around police and the broader carceral system, particularly with youth and marginalized communities;
• Provide one-on-one information about what to expect in various encounters with the carceral system;
• Connect people to supports;
• Track trends in police behaviour vis-à-vis activists and protests;
• Track police brutality and police-caused injuries.
