Regular run prompt is kinda useless nowadays since you can mostly launch anything from the start menu

I live learning and teaching new things like those when they come up.

Today's was the carat substitution in bash. It probably works in other shells too but IDK, I'm too old to learn a new shell.

The way it works is fairly similar to the / in sed or similar. You can use them to run the previous command but with a string substitution.

For example, let's say I entered this command: dig A cascadiacrow.org

When it fails to resolve, I realize it was a .com domain. Rather than retyping the command, or hitting the up arrow to change the previous command, you could do this: ^org^com^

And it would run: dig A cascadiacrow.com

Kind of cool with those one liners you spend way too much time on and find a typo.

Anyway, I used it and someone thought it was magic so if it's new to you too, happy Monday.

I fucking got over it. Yeah, if you get it wrong, people are going to yell at you. And you learn. That’s the way life fucking works. But listen: it turns out that content warnings are fucking great. I see a bunch of posts that say “us pol” or “transphobia” or whatever, I get to decide if I have enough spoons for that right then, and take a pass if I don’t. I fucking wish Bluesky had that."

Oh for the fucking love of god, DON'T. Please don't use the CW tag as a subject field. That's not the point. It's fine and welcome if you CW NSFW (you should), controversial opinions, pictures that can be scary, sure. But don't overuse it. You should not use it on every post. You should, however, write what's it about, so people can hide it if they don't want to see it.

Use *literally anything else* on the fediverse. Glitch-soc, Akkoma, Pleroma, Misskey, Sharkey, GotoSocial, Friendica, Firefish, Iceshrimp, Wafrn, whatever, just not fucking vanilla Mastodon. It's missing some features that I consider essential on other platforms (emoji reactions, more than 4 images per post, advanced markdown) and instead focuses on weird stuff nobody has asked for (like making their own quote-boost system instead of using Misskey's, which had been in use for literal years).

Join the fediverse. We're cool and limitless, and you can make your own independent instance that only you controls.

quoting
note1qa6…vjy7

"Sorry, I’m saying it. Mastodon. We want fucking Mastodon. It’s run by an actual non-profit foundation, none of this “public benefit corporation” bullshit. It’s not subject to corporate enshittification. It’s not subject to creeping network-wide puritanism. Mastodon. Goddammit. Mastodon Mastodon Mastodon.

“No. Choosing an instance is too hard!” Have you chosen an email provider, fuckers? Yes? Congratulations! You can pick an instance.

“But how do I know that instance won’t implode in a giant cloud of drama?” You don’t. It happens, and it sucks when it happens, but it doesn’t happen all that often. Go find another instance.

“But what if the instance I’m on doesn’t federate with the ones my friends are on, or they change their policies to be more puritanical, or—” Go find another fucking instance. This is not rocket surgery.

“But if I move instances, I’ll lose my posts!” Yeah, you’ll lose your posts. You know what you won’t lose? Your entire group of followers. You know, the way you lost them when you moved from fucking Twitter to fucking Bluesky. With fucking Mastodon, you don’t have that problem."

https://giants-club.net/articles/just-use-mastodon/

#SocialMedia #SocialNetworks #Mastodon #Fediverse #Decentralization #BlueSky
