AI agents underperform because they don't understand the context well enough. The solution is to give the AI agents much more context ... like everything, so that it's effectively 24/7 surveillance. Voice recording, email and phone correspondence, stored files. And then that wouldn't be enough, because they'd still need more. And for what?

AI maximalists need to understand that the costs to privacy, security, environment, etc are simply not worth it.

Hoh River to Blue Glacier trip report. This was a good trip. 37 miles with 5.4k of elevation gain (most of that gain in the last 1/4 of the trip). The trail was in good condition overall but had some tricky areas towards the end (Elk Lake to Glacier Meadows). I made it a 2-night trip camping at Lewis Meadows both nights and heading up to see the glacier in between.

Overall, this trip was nice because you got to see many different parts of the river from the glacial source to where it's a real big wild river that can change course, along with the ecosystems at different altitudes. The old growth along the valley bottom (and some on the slopes) is mind-blowing. It became commonplace to see hemlock, western red cedar, and douglas fir trucks 10-15' in diameter. I didn't see any big fauna, but could hear bull elk bugles near and far.

I made a mistake of only bringing trail mix on Friday's trip, which turned out to take much longer and be much more difficult than I had expected. Friday was also tough because I didn't see anyone the entire day except for when I left and returned to my base camp. I like solitude but that was a bit much. It was cloudy as well, and I despaired of not being able to see anything when I finally got up to the lookout. As it turned out, I did get a great view of the glacier and the summit did peek-a-boo through the clouds. The view from the lateral moraine was worth the price of admission.

The bobcat killed another chicken the other day. We saw it jump in from the kitchen window and were out there yelling within 30 seconds. By that time, it had killed one chicken and was jumping out of the run.

So that really lit a fire under me to upgrade the run defenses. I've added a couple feet of fencing height and am in the process of adding netting over the top. Any suggestions for a name to put over the gateway? We were dark-laughing that we should name it "Bobcat Buffet."

Photos are my total newbie attempt to create some lumber with a chainsaw and draw blade. Don't laugh! It's my first try. Also, I definitely should have cut notches in the posts to fit in the lintel but didn't think of that until it was too late. It's secure.

I love this story. Beth's has been a thing in Seattle for generations and is one of the places from my younger days that's still around. I'm so happy for the new owner and the move back to 24/7 hours! May their tribe increase!

One of my favorite memories was a group of friends and one guy's bet that he could finish the 12-egg omelette in one sitting including the hash browns. (He couldn't do it.)

I love the owner's idea of one day opening up a museum or display of their best or famous artwork from past years.

I also love this part about the patina on the flat-top grill: "Reed gave the place a fresh coat of paint and some necessary upgrades, adding some vegan options to the menu. But the rest he kept, down to the flavors baked into the cafe’s flat-top grill."

Wendell Berry helped me to see that there have always been two types of American people: those that are always looking to expand and exploit the land, and those that want to conserve and care for it. He taught me the truth of the cliche that the best things in life cannot be bought with money, and that instead those things are bought with love and commitment.

Because of Berry, I long for a sense of place for myself and my family. In this respect, I can appreciate the native peoples' ethos of the land and their relation to it. A place is the land and the people who live there, altogether. For Berry, that was a Kentucky farming community. It's different for each of us.

In an interview after the 2016 election, Berry was asked about his preferred candidate losing. He replied something like, "Even if Hillary won, I'd still be on the losing side. I'll always be on the losing side." From that, I recognized that to embrace a life apart from consumerism and land exploitation is to reject values that are embraced by the vast majority of our fellow citizens, and that you can't change them but that it's totally OK. Berry never gave up hope and rejoiced to see that a small minority understood and agreed with what he advocated.

Anyway, I'll miss him but believe he had a good life and went because it was time. Goodbye, Andy Catlett.

Now go visit your local farmers market before the season is over.

We've been saving the frozen dog food insulation for at least a year and I finally figured out what to do with it.

The roof of the wood shed has a lot of condensation when it's cold out, enough to drip down quite a bit of water. I'm hoping that insulating the underside with this stuff will prevent that. But ... I think it's made of corn starch or something like that so not sure how long it will last. We shall find out!
