2026-10-23T15:46:23Z

I’ve spent enough time with Ravens to know they’re not always in the mood. But every once in awhile—maybe it’s part of their PR campaign for the Halloween season, or maybe they just finished eating or preening—they’ll humor me and stick around for a moment where they seem just as curious as I am. A genuine “who’s watching who” scenario when I suddenly realize I’ve forgotten to breathe.

Sometimes people will apologize for walking past and disturbing the birds while I’m trying to take photos. Which is very considerate but I’ll tell them it’s not a problem. First of all it’s a public place for everyone to enjoy. And second, a hungry hummingbird won’t leave.

2026-10-07T15:52:02Z

My next door neighbor passed away a month ago. We weren’t close, but we greeted each other almost every day for two decades and I would help her carry her Costco purchases up the stairs. She would sometimes apologize for being old and grumpy and I would joke that there was plenty to be grumpy about. The area where we really connected was that as a teacher, she devoted her career to young people, and my work is with transitional-age youth. I would tell her that I had to keep my grumpiness hidden because I didn’t want the kids to see my attitude and give in to hopelessness. And she would say that we just do what we can. When my ballot arrived the other day, I thought of her and wished that she could still be here and maybe have something to celebrate in a few weeks. But even though she’s not, I’m still doing what I can. This is for you, Sylvia, from the Undercover Grump. Let’s turn this shit around.

My bird obsession began with shorebirds. And I haven’t been out to see them this year. When we have high surf advisories, at high tide there isn’t much room for the birds to do their thing, so I’m not sure I want to waste two hours roundtrip to see if they’re there. This curlew is from last year.

I used to be pretty prolific with the birds; awhile back I was probably in the field more than 300 days a year. Now it’s more like 100. But one of the things I’ve always treasured about it is the freedom. There’s no pressure to do anything, and when I’m out, it’s because I choose to be.
