You can work together, see each other at the same places, drink beer together, get invited once or twice, and still not really be in the circle. It’s not hostile. The slots were just taken a long time ago.<br/><br/>Most &#34;Ausländer&#34; end up hanging with other &#34;Ausländer.&#34; That’s where the actual social life happens for a lot of them. Same language background, same outsider position, same situation. It works fine for them, but it also means they never really enter Swiss circles. The two groups mostly stay separate.<br/><br/>You end up alone as fuck if you don’t already have people and you don’t join the foreigner scene either. Not in a dramatic way, just because most of us aren’t looking for new close friends as adults. If you love privacy, then this place is for you. People keep to themselves, nobody gets in your business, and the distance stays. If that kind of quiet is what you want, it works. If you need a real group, you’ll notice the gap pretty quickly.<br/><br/>The language part makes it stick. Speaking fluent German is enough for work, shops, doctors, and other foreigners. German-speaking Swiss hate speaking High German though. The moment it becomes social, most people switch to their local dialect and you’re the one who doesn’t fully match. Even if you understand a lot and can speak some version of it, the fact that you didn’t grow up with it stays noticeable. That keeps the outsider position in place.<br/><br/>This is how it works in German-speaking Switzerland.
