IMHO the BSD familie is not in the category dinosaur

The BSD boxes which I had installed at different clients have worked literally till they fell apart. All of them were running freeBSD

The human clients never knew how to even spell the operating system. I quietly replaced hard drives when they were broken and threw the systems away when the hardware was done the operating system was always good.

None of my BSD based boxes ever lost any data because I followed the rules which were in the man pages. Back then I came from a Linux World compiling kernels manually and all other GNU programs, no distribución then.

BSD FELT LIKE THE FOUNDATION OF WHERE LINUX SHOULD HAVE BEEN

My clients were running Mission critical operations and I couldn't trust them to Linux so I went to BSD I was never ever disappointed.

What drew me to BSD was the centralized system of everything together. Not just a fantastic kernel with the rest glued to it, glued with water based Glue

The BSD programmers and user manuals are very well written
I was amazed how easy it was to search for the information with my Linux background see that in BSD it was much better documented and that everything I needed was already there I didn't need to go on dial-up internet to find out something

When I fired up this version of Libre Office writer for the first time, on this GNU Linux installation, I was pleasantly greeted with a request if I wanted to visit the release notes page

These programmers follow principles of logic and dont open your browser without permission, thus eating valuable bandwidth.

Thank you Open Source programmers of Libre Office

This is something I miss when I have to work with closed source LLM invested slop code while fixing my clients soft / hardware problems. Luckily these days I can migrate one in ten to Open Source program suites, one in twenty to Open Source OS installs, for which I choose a suitable Linux distro

Quote from Hammer2 page Because HAMMER2 is a block copy-on-write ...

2026-02-05T11:35:10Z

In reply to nevent1q…jwxk
_________________________

Quote from Hammer2 page

Because HAMMER2 is a block copy-on-write filesystem, the "atime" field is not supported and will typically just reflect local system in-memory caches or mtime.

The radix tree is dynamic in that each entry can dynamically control how many bits it chops off. This allows small files to be contained in just one or two levels regardless of the block seek positions. The depth of the radix tree is increased as needed via a splitting mechanism, and will also be recombined if it grows smaller. All block references are 64-bit aligned-byte-indexed references and thus portable regardless of physical sector size changes between underlying block devices.

Inodes are 1KB of which 512 bytes are used for the top-level radix tree OR 512 bytes of data. Any file less than or equal to 512 bytes stores its data directly in the inode. Files up to 256KB can be accommodated with direct inode block references.

Directory entries are hashed (semi-sorted hash algorithm), and directly embedded in the radix table's blockref structure for maximum performance. Files with very long filenames will contain a dataref, otherwise filenames are embedded in the directory entry itself. Because directory entries are hashed, seeking and lookups are able to use a radix search and no linear scan of the directory is needed.

The inode and directory entry structure is extremely well suited for any file size or directory size, from tiny to huge.

Because of the block-copy-on-write nature of the filesystem, the filesystem is able to create a snapshot trivially simply by copying the volume header's root block table (4 blockref entries). The directory topology actually starts with a SUPERROOT, and volume ROOTs are directory entries under the SUPERROOT. Though the entries are actually special-cased a bit and actually part of the root inode for each filesystem root. And since physical freeing of space is handled via a bulk meta-data scan, destroying a snapshot or volume can be done simply by wiping the inode and ignoring everything under it... the next bulkfree scan will reclaim any reclaimable space. Similarly with file deletions... the top-level data blockrefs can simply be removed. The inode can simply be removed from the radix tree.

Performance is very good. HAMMER2 uses a variable-sized block in powers of two, starting at 1KB, up to 64KB, for the last block of the file (straddling EOF). All earlier blocks in the file, if any, use 64KB blocks. The freemap is organized by domain to cluster various meta-data types together. Indirect blocks can be one of two sizes: 16KB or 64KB, allowing medium-sized files and directories to be optimally allocated. In addition, file data compression of a logical block can result in a smaller physical block. The physical layer always does 64KB I/O and can cluster the I/O on top of that.

The amazing DragonFlyBSD has the fantastic
Hammer2 filesystem:

* Block copy-on-write filesystem
* Instant recovery on mount
* Instant snapshots
* Mounted snapshots are writable
* Automatic snapshotting can be enabled at the system level via periodic scripts
* Default Periodic also does daily bulk pass on the meta-data to free space
* Automatic compression (controllable on directory recursion and per-file basis)
* Automatic de-duplication
* Future master/slave mechanism
* Utilizes a dynamic radix tree
* 64-bit hardlink counter
* 2^63 logical file size limit
* Recursive check codes to detect corruption
* Any number of pseudo-filesystem volumes for each physical hammer2 disk image (also used by snapshots).

In extension of what I said here I want to expand on the joy I have with Cairo Dock coded by the GNOME team.

When you first spawn Cairo Dock it greets you with a friendly requester, asking if you want OpenGL or standard
FX created by your fully personizable Cairo Dock.

The dock defaults with a exeptionally usuable configuration out of the box. The first thing I did was seek how to spawn it from the keyboard. I only use Xorg for gfx output, of my code / programs; Im a sh warrior.

It was as straight forward as it can be
* open up the requester with right mouse
* click Cairo Doc
* choose configure
* tab on configuration
* click short keys

Every configuration tab has a logical layout and this is still in easy mode, just like VideoLan VLC has. You can later play in advanced mode and go super deep into finetuning your Cairo dock. It evan has _backgrounds_ to be confiured, if you choose to.
Cairo dock also defaults to fading out when a program of yours overlaps it, so it's out of the way, without you needing to manually hide it.

I configured a weather addon which uses https://Open-meteo.com I only needed to tell it the longtitude and lattitude of the districts I wanted in SR/SA and was done

Cairo Dock is a real fun dock to play with. Super configurable and customizable. I use it along side my XFCe4 panel and they peacefully co exist. I did much more but now want to move onto another subject

BTW: I entered this toot in a standardnotes window since the web viewport is too small and the android sucks at getting fast input. Nothing beats a physical keyboard

Without going into religous stances regarding Roman Catholicism {and their abuses (which also occured on a grand scale in SR / SA)} I want you to read what the current pope says about LLM and their enormous damage towards the homosapiens species

When a pope makes logical sense on a *Global Scale* through all manners of thinking, something is *globally damaging* our species!

Quote

Faces and voices are sacred. God, who created us in his image and likeness, gave them to us when he called us to life through the Word he addressed to us. This Word resounded down the centuries through the voices of the prophets, and then became flesh in the fullness of time. We too have heard and seen this Word (cf. 1 Jn 1:1-3) — in which God communicates his very self to us — because it has been made known to us in the voice and face of Jesus, the Son of God

LLM are literally f#cking us over on all fronts.

TIL about M87 the Super Massive Black Hole in the Messier87 Galaxy

One internet article states its distance at 55x10⁶ light-years away. It spins at 860 x 10⁶ km/h!

Quotes from Wikipedia differ a bit

The black hole's mass = (6.5 ± 0.2stat ± 0.7sys) × 109 M☉.[76]

This is one of the highest known masses for such an object. A rotating disk of ionized gas surrounds the black hole, and is roughly perpendicular to the relativistic jet. The disk rotates at velocities of up to roughly 1,000 km/s (2,200,000 mph) or 1⁄300 the speed of light,[77]

Sirius in its Binary Dance with Sirius B are the brightest in the night sky. It's a gorgeous view of awsome galactic power watching this Blue Star. You can't see Sirius B with the eyes due to the difference in emitted Light. If you look in Canis Major you can see Sirius. To see both you need a telescope.

2025-12-31T13:45:06Z

When you have workflows like mine it's unreasonable to have dozens of slow usb sticks ready to dd distributions on. It's cumbersome to index / manage so many slow devices. USB sticks also live much shorter than 2.5" SSD's here. I've had some working for years (mostly reads) And some fail in weeks after many writes, for me unreliable storage devices

Ventoy has become a vital tool ISO mangagement and booting for me, since I can dump bootable ISO''s of most OS's on SATA SSD's, structure the ISO's in logical directory flows and have a librarian oversight of them

I can mount the SSD via an USB3 tray and thus move hundreds of ISO's around without a fuzz. I use 2.5" SATA SSD's because they are large enough in physical dimensions to be handled easily and I can write and ID on them with a marker. They can also live for years of R/W operations without failing.

Ventoy can easily boot a variety ISO/WIM/IMG/VHD(x)/EFI of OS's which are of various origin.
>> Ventoy is an open source tool to create bootable USB drive for ISO/WIM/IMG/VHD(x)/EFI files

When a ISO++ fails to boot, you need to make the coder(s) of Ventoy aware of it, and chances are that in the next update, scripts have been finetuned so Ventoy can handle that family of files also.

Ventoy is easy to use update run & maintain for the end user.

Try Ventoy

2025-12-19T10:42:30Z

grep is a very important command. grep is considered complex by many for no well funded reason.

Why this bold statement?

There are not only man pages available, for all POSIX Operating Systems, but also very good tutorials, even in de Linux documentation project.

Don't think that you'll be able to learn high level grepping in just two, to five minutes. grep is a tool great at doing one thing in a great manner, pure Unix wise.

However

ls -R ~/your_dir | grep string

is already a simple level of grep usage
