An invitation to notice grace, courage, and goodness in the life of the world.

Opening Reflection

Picture a child with leg braces and a crooked arm running joyfully into a flock of sparrows feeding on birdseed. The birds rise and circle playfully just above him, again and again, until the seed is gone. It is not a spectacle. It feels gently orchestrated, a glimpse of joy, attention, and grace. This is a personal experience and the reason I make this bulletin.

None of them is grand. A crew repaired roofs. A stranger took a wrong turn. Two men carried a friend. Walking with God can mean noticing what is beautiful and ordinary, and then acting faithfully when it costs something: time, comfort, or safety. Some readers will call that noticing prayer, and others will call it paying attention. Either way, it seems to begin with seeing the person in front of us. These accounts do not prove anything. They invite reflection, and they show people choosing care when no one required it.

This Week's Signs of Grace

Hammers and Ramps in Georgetown County

What happened: In Georgetown County, South Carolina, more than 50 volunteers spent October 20 through 24 on the Bunnelle Days of Service, run by the Frances P. Bunnelle Foundation with local partners. Two fellow detainees picked him up and carried him to his ride. Nalwamba said, "Those friends offered to carry me, and, I mean, I'm so grateful to them." A Courageous Example

A wrong turn on a GPS led a stranger to a hilltop in Chattooga County, Georgia, where he saw a house on fire. According to a report by WRCB distributed through CNN Newsource, the driver, identified only as Mr. Casey, was heading home to Alabama with his son. He stopped and went into the home, where James Burke had fallen asleep in his recliner. Casey woke him, and together with others he helped get the family's children out. The Burkes, who have fostered more than 500 children over 15 years, had 11 children and a grandchild at home. No one was hurt. Larita Burke said, "If it had been another five minutes, it would've been a different situation. We wouldn't have made it." The home was badly damaged, and the cause is under investigation. The family says it plans to keep fostering once the house is rebuilt.

Courage here was not planned. Casey could have kept driving, and entering a burning house carries real risk. Some may see providence in the wrong turn, but that is an interpretation, and the reporting claims only what happened. What is certain is that a stranger chose to act, and fourteen people are alive. The report gave no date for the fire beyond a Saturday night, and versions of the story differed on that detail.

Opening Reflection

Picture a child with leg braces and a crooked arm running joyfully into a flock of sparrows feeding on birdseed. The birds rise and circle playfully just above him, again and again, until the seed is gone. It is only an image, a parable of sorts, but it stays with me. The moment feels gently orchestrated, not as a spectacle, but as a glimpse of joy, attention, and grace.

Walking with God, for many people, begins with that kind of attention: noticing a small beauty, a stranger in need, a person who has not been seen. It also means acting when the moment calls for it, even when acting costs something. This week's stories are ordinary and specific. A teenager gives away his shoes. Two brothers drop what they are doing and run toward trouble. A search team keeps going when time is almost gone. None of them proves anything. Some may see grace in them, and all of them invite reflection.

This Week's Signs of Grace

A Pair of Shoes on a Roadside

What happened: On October 11, 2026, Fox 10 Phoenix reported that Jordan Hope, an 18-year-old recent high school graduate building a computer business in Pinal County, Arizona, was driving to the bank when he noticed an elderly man struggling outside a Walgreens in Maricopa. The man, known as Mister Roy, had worn-out shoes and trouble with his legs. Hope pulled over, took the sneakers off his own feet, and gave them to him. A bystander, Yareli Madrid, shared a Facebook post about it that spread widely. Hope said he did not know anyone was watching. Roy is grieving the recent loss of his wife. Hope told the station he plans to stay in touch, with dinners and church visits. The report says a fundraiser for Roy has raised more than $15,000.

Why it may matter: The act was small, quick, and unseen, and it asked something of the giver. Many traditions say that care for a stranger's body is care for the stranger's dignity. Hope himself described it as spreading the love of God, and readers of any faith, or none, can still recognize what he did as a simple, costly kindness. The part that may matter most came afterward: he plans to keep showing up.

Two Brothers at the Edge of a Pond

What happened: WISH-TV in Indianapolis reported on October 14, 2026, that on Monday, October 12, at about 11:15 in the morning, a grandmother in Carmel, Indiana, ended up in a retention pond after her stroller tipped and partly sank. Her 2-year-old grandchild was in the stroller and her 4-year-old was strapped to her back. Neither the grandmother nor the 4-year-old could swim. Brothers Grant, 14, and Maddox Larger, 15, were nearby. Grant heard a splash and called 911. Maddox, a competitive swimmer, went into the water, and together they brought the grandmother and the older child ashore. Maddox then freed the 2-year-old, who coughed up water and began breathing again. Officials said the brothers' quick actions likely saved the child's life.

Why it may matter: Courage is often unplanned. Neither boy had time to rehearse, and one of them admitted he was scared that someone would not make it. He went anyway. Stories like this invite us to ask what we would hope to do when someone else's life is suddenly in our hands, and to notice that ordinary people can meet that moment with steadiness and care.

Thirty-Four Days, and Then a Small Doghouse

What happened: Cowboy State Daily reported on October 14, 2026, that Luna, a 10-year-old Jack Russell terrier, was found alive in Yellowstone National Park after 34 days loose. She had slipped out of a rented cabin on September 10 while her family, visiting from California, was away. After the family searched alone for a week, Katie Boucher, president of the Norris Arc Training and Recovery Center, led a search. Luna was often seen but hard to catch. With search permits about to expire and the park's winter shutdown near, Boucher's team set a humane trap with a small doghouse for shelter. Luna was inside it when they returned. She had lost about 10 pounds and was taken to a veterinarian.

Why it may matter: Not every act of mercy is dramatic. Some are long, tiring, and mostly unnoticed. A family and a search team refused to give up on one small, frightened creature, and they built shelter into their plan. For some readers, that patient faithfulness may echo the old idea of a shepherd who goes looking for what is lost.

A Courageous Example

Irena Sendler was a social worker in Warsaw when German forces confined the city's Jews to a ghetto in 1940. Her work gave her a reason to enter it, and she used that access to bring in food and aid. By 1943 she belonged to Zegota, a secret council of Poles and Jews that hid Jews and supplied them with money, false documents, and medical care. Under the alias Jolanta, she helped smuggle Jewish children out of the ghetto and placed them in homes, convents, orphanages, and other hiding places with new names. She also kept coded records of who each child really was, hoping families might be reunited after the war.

The Gestapo arrested her in October 1943. She was tortured and sentenced to death, but she did not reveal the children's names or her colleagues. Zegota members arranged a bribe, and she was freed in early 1944. Accounts differ on the numbers: the Holocaust Encyclopedia says several hundred children left the ghetto through her work, while a popular biography credits her and her colleagues with about 2,500 and her personally with an estimated 400. She was recognized by Yad Vashem as Righteous Among the Nations in 1965 and died in 2008 at age 98. Her story is not simple, and many others shared the risk.

Perhaps grace is less like lightning and more like a bird lifting from the grass, easy to miss unless we are paying attention, and worth running toward when we see it.

An invitation to notice grace, courage, and goodness in the life of the world.

Opening Reflection

Some forms of goodness begin with a small change of direction. Someone stops rather than passes by. Someone looks at a damaged place and sees something worth tending. Someone makes room before the person who needs it arrives.

Walking with God may mean becoming available for these small changes. There is beauty in paying attention, but attention can also interrupt us. It may ask for time we had set aside for something else, for patient work without applause, or for a decision that will be difficult to explain.

This week’s reflections hold that tension: the delight of noticing and the responsibility of responding. Neither requires us to call suffering necessary or to pretend every danger ends well. We can be grateful for help without claiming to understand why help arrives for one person and not another. Perhaps grace can be received most honestly when gratitude leaves room for sorrow, and wonder makes us more attentive rather than more certain.

Russia: The Human Rights Foundation, citing Meduza, reported that organizers at an international youth festival in Yekaterinburg provided an unrestricted internet network to foreign delegates while Russian citizens used a state-censored network; foreign visitors reportedly received SIM cards that bypassed blocks. HRF said about 5,000 Russian attendees faced Roskomnadzor filters among roughly 10,000 participants from 191 countries, illustrating how censorship can also restrict access to digital payments and financial services. An invitation to notice grace, courage, and goodness in the life of the world.

Opening Reflection

It is possible to look at someone and see only a label: old, imprisoned, struggling, stranger. Attention asks us to pause before that label becomes the whole story. What does this person love? What can this person offer? What might become possible if someone stayed long enough to find out?

Walking with God may begin with that pause. It can mean noticing beauty without needing to own it, or recognizing another person’s dignity before deciding whether helping will be convenient. Such attention is not always easy. It asks us to surrender a little certainty, give away some time, and sometimes accept a real cost.

The reflections below invite a modest hope, not a tidy explanation of suffering. Goodness does not make hardship necessary or erase what has been lost. But when attention becomes patient care, it can open a little space where a person is more than a problem and tomorrow is not entirely closed.

This Week’s Signs of Grace

Room to grow

What happened: Walter Minns, 88, received the Volunteer Award at BBC Radio Humberside’s Make a Difference ceremony at Hull City Hall on September 23, recognizing his work with children at a nursery in Sancton, East Yorkshire (BBC News). For more than 25 years, he has encouraged children to grow plants, including through a sensory garden where they can touch and smell what grows; during the pandemic, he kept the club going with weekly recorded videos (BBC News). Speaking about the children, he said, “I love being with the children, it makes me get up in the morning” (BBC News).

Why it may matter:
There is something generous about helping a child notice what cannot be hurried. A garden invites curiosity without demanding a quick answer. This story may suggest grace in the exchange between generations: one person offers experience, while another brings fresh attention. Neither needs to be reduced to a giver or a receiver. Walking with God can include making room for that shared delight, and returning often enough for trust to grow.

Care beyond the walls

What happened:

Help after the interruption

What happened:
In original reporting published September 23, FOX 5 DC described how donations helped a delivery driver identified as William obtain a replacement car after a crash in Bowie, Maryland (FOX 5 DC).
Customer Glenn Ndibnu went to collect his order after William called, filmed the scene, and shared a video that drew attention online; according to the station, neither driver involved in the collision was injured (FOX 5 DC).
Viewers contributed through a fundraiser, and William bought another car, though the report does not specify the crash date or donation total (FOX 5 DC).

Why it may matter:

The part worth receiving with gratitude is the practical help, not the accident or someone’s distress becoming public. Suffering does not need to be called a gift for generosity to matter. This account invites a careful question: when another person’s difficulty interrupts an ordinary day, can attention move beyond watching toward useful support? Walking with God may mean responding to the need while still respecting the person’s privacy, choices, and dignity.

A Courageous Example

This week’s historical reflection turns to Le Chambon-sur-Lignon and neighboring villages in France, whose residents sheltered thousands of refugees, including Jews fleeing persecution, between 1940 and 1944 (United States Holocaust Memorial Museum).
André and Magda Trocmé and Pastor Edouard Theis helped lead an effort involving people of several faiths and none, while the Jewish Children’s Aid Society, OSE, played an important role in bringing children to safety (United States Holocaust Memorial Museum).

Homes, farms, schools, and boarding houses became places of refuge, and helpers supplied food, clothing, and false identity papers (United States Holocaust Memorial Museum).

The danger was real: leaders were arrested, and some students and rescuers were deported and killed; when André Trocmé went into hiding, Magda took over leadership of the rescue effort (United States Holocaust Memorial Museum).

This history is not a simple tale in which goodness prevented every loss. Nor should its dangers be compared casually with ordinary disagreements. It does show conviction becoming shelter through many hands. Faithful action may sometimes mean refusing to let fear have the final word about whose life deserves protection.

Give twenty unhurried minutes to someone whose company you may have begun to take for granted. Ask about something they enjoy or know well, and listen without reaching for your phone. If a small need emerges, offer one specific form of help rather than a broad promise. Let their answer guide you. Always look for greater grace in everyday life.

Closing Thought

Hope can begin where a hurried judgment ends, when another life is met with enough patience for its dignity, its gifts, and its unfinished possibilities to become visible.

Gareth Soloway's "bear market is over" call led the theme at 159,221 views, and the theme totals 712,321 views across 14 videos from six channels, a clear first place. About 66% of those views came from Verified Investing and Soloway, but Visser, Pompliano, Natalie Brunell, Simply Bitcoin and Swan all made the same call.

Consider this parable-like image, not a news report: a child with leg braces and a crooked arm runs joyfully into sparrows feeding on birdseed. The birds rise and circle just above him, again and again, until the seed is gone. The moment feels gently orchestrated, not as a spectacle, but as a glimpse of joy, attention, and grace.
Nothing in that image asks us to explain the child’s body or turn his life into a lesson. His joy belongs to him. Perhaps the invitation is simply to notice without taking possession of what we see.
Walking with God can also mean letting attention become responsibility. Who cannot reach the food table? Who needs patient care rather than hurried treatment? What could we learn now that might help a neighbor later? Goodness need not be dramatic to be costly.
