#ESETresearch uncovered #MythicRatatoskr, an undocumented Go backdoor hiding its C&C server inside the #Yggdrasil mesh network. It was used against a Ukrainian 🇺🇦 grain logistics firm in an intrusion that ended in a destructive #Sandworm attack.
https://www.welivesecurity.com/en/eset-research/mythicratatoskr-yggdrasil-enabled-backdoor-deployed-uac0099-sandworm-collaboration/
On July 16th, 2025, #UAC 0099 gained initial access via a spearphishing email, leading to an execution chain dropping the #MATCHWOK backdoor. One day later, the attackers deployed a previously unknown backdoor we named MythicRatatoskr.
#Yggdrasil is a decentralized, end-to-end-encrypted IPv6 mesh network. Nodes are addressed by their public keys, and no central server runs the mesh – making it hard to disrupt. To our knowledge, this is the first documented abuse of Yggdrasil by a state-aligned threat actor.
Yggdrasil is not designed for anonymity, so we generated a map of the network’s spanning tree to locate the C&C server. It sits near the center of the tree, making it easily reachable from other peers.
Two months later, on September 17th, 2025, #Sandworm wiped data across the company’s network using SDelete deployed via Active Directory Group Policy. We assess with high confidence that UAC 0099 handed off access to Sandworm during the intrusion.
IoCs are available in our GitHub repo: https://github.com/eset/malware-ioc/tree/master/mythicratatoskr

Just an old, still-trusted, unrevoked shim and basic knowledge of how UEFI works is enough to bypass UEFI Secure Boot and deploy a UEFI bootkit.
For more details and instructions on how to verify that the dbx patches were properly applied on your system, read our blogpost:
https://www.welivesecurity.com/en/eset-research/forgotten-uefi-shims-undermining-secure-boot/

#ESETResearch has discovered the first known AI-powered ransomware, which we named #PromptLock. The PromptLock malware uses the gpt-oss:20b model from OpenAI locally via the Ollama API to generate malicious Lua scripts on the fly, which it then executes.
PromptLock leverages Lua scripts generated from hard-coded prompts to enumerate the local filesystem, inspect target files, exfiltrate selected data, and perform encryption. These Lua scripts are cross-platform compatible, functioning on #Windows, #Linux, and #macOS.
Based on the detected user files, the malware may exfiltrate data, encrypt it, or potentially destroy it. Although the destruction functionality appears to be not yet implemented. #Bitcoin address used in the prompt appears to belong to Bitcoin creator https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Satoshi_Nakamoto
For its file encryption mechanism, the PromptLock ransomware utilizes the SPECK 128-bit encryption algorithm.
Although multiple indicators suggest the sample is a proof-of-concept (PoC) or work-in-progress rather than fully operational malware deployed in the wild, we believe it is our responsibility to inform the cybersecurity community about such developments.
The PromptLock ransomware is written in #Golang, and we have identified both Windows and Linux variants uploaded to VirusTotal. IoCs:
🚨 Filecoder.PromptLock.A
📄 24BF7B72F54AA5B93C6681B4F69E579A47D7C102
AD223FE2BB4563446AEE5227357BBFDC8ADA3797
BB8FB75285BCD151132A3287F2786D4D91DA58B8
F3F4C40C344695388E10CBF29DDB18EF3B61F7EF
639DBC9B365096D6347142FCAE64725BD9F73270
161CDCDB46FB8A348AEC609A86FF5823752065D2

#BREAKING #ESETresearch can confirm the news of #Lumma Stealer's revival. ESET telemetry and botnet tracking show that operators are rebuilding their infrastructure, with their renewed activity reaching similar levels to those before the #disruption in May 2025.
Lumma Stealer operators are registering dozens of new domains weekly, resolving them primarily at nameservers located in RU. As seen with other threats in the past, this can complicate future attempts to disrupt its malicious operations.
In partnership with #Microsoft and other allies, ESET is tracking Lumma Stealer activity and continues to partially disrupt its operations, specifically by targeting its #Steam dead drop resolvers.
While ESET telemetry shows new Lumma Stealer builds weekly, their codebase hasn’t changed much since the takedown attempt. This suggests that the attackers had to focus on operational recovery instead of innovation.
C&C data show reduced activity around the disruption (marked in turquoise) but the number of new samples detected per day has seen only minimal changes, highlighting the continual risk.
For more info on Lumma Stealer and the disruption, read our blogpost from a few weeks back https://www.welivesecurity.com/en/eset-research/eset-takes-part-global-operation-disrupt-lumma-stealer/

After years of dominance in #ESET’s top #infostealer statistics, the era of #AgentTesla has come to an end. It finished H1 2025 in fourth place, its numbers having decreased by 57%. The reason? It is no longer under active development.
The threat actors behind Agent Tesla have reportedly lost access to the servers with the malware’s source code. A successor appeared almost immediately – another #MaaS threat, known as #SnakeStealer or #SnakeKeylogger, has claimed the number one spot.
Recommended as a suitable replacement directly in Agent Tesla’s Telegram channel, SnakeStealer now takes up almost a fifth of all infostealer detections registered by ESET telemetry. Between H2 2024 and H1 2025, its detections more than doubled.
If you want to find out more information about this changing of the guard in the infostealer threat landscape, head on over to #ESETThreatReport: https://welivesecurity.com/en/eset-research/eset-threat-report-h1-2025

The #FBI and #DCIS disrupted #Danabot. #ESET was one of several companies that cooperated in this effort. https://www.welivesecurity.com/en/eset-research/danabot-analyzing-fallen-empire/
#ESETresearch has been involved in this operation since 2018. Our contribution included providing technical analyses of the malware and its backend infrastructure, as well as identifying Danabot’s C&C servers. Danabot is a #MaaS #infostealer that has also been seen pushing additional malware – even #ransomware, such as #LockBit, #Buran, and #Crisis – to compromised systems.
We have analyzed Danabot campaigns all around the world and found a substantial number of distinct samples of the malware, as well as identified more than 1,000 C&Cs.
This infostealer is frequently promoted on underground forums. The affiliates are offered an administration panel application, a backconnect tool for real-time control of bots, and a proxy server application that relays the communication between the bots and the C&C server.
IoCs are available in our GitHub repo. You can expect updates with more details in the coming days. https://github.com/eset/malware-ioc/tree/master/danabot

#ESETresearch has discovered a zero day exploit abusing #CVE-2025-24983 vulnerability in the Windows kernel 🪟 to elevate privileges (#LPE). First seen in the wild in March 2023, the exploit was deployed through #PipeMagic backdoor on the compromised machines.

The exploit targets Windows 8.1 and Server 2012 R2. The vulnerability affects OSes released before Windows 10 build 1809, including still supported Windows Server 2016. It does not affect more recent Windows OSes such as Windows 11.

The vulnerability is a use after free in Win32k driver.
