not sure what sort of air source heat pump you're considering, but it's rarely necessary to replace the radiators. That's probably one of the myths spread by the - well - fossil fuel industry. Whilst you do lose a bit of efficiency with old radiators, air source heat pumps still work well.

A better investment is usually building insulation, as that's where most of the heat is lost. Or, of course, both: new low temp radiators and proper building insulation.

That is why we humans have developed something called "backups" for risk mitigation, because, as we know, we are fallible, just like the tools we make (not to mention new tools, which we are not yet 100% confident in using).

Some of them don't seem to realise that this will cause massive headache (AKA "technical debt") in the future if they can't even understand 'their own' code just a few hours after writing it.

What puzzled me the most was that some candidates were unable to properly explain the code they'd submitted as part of a home assignment. Their very own code, to be precise.

Analysing an error in their own submission: virtually impossible. Fixing it: unfeasible. Or making minor changes to the code during the interview: huge drama. Some of these people don't seem to be software developers at all, but rather prompt engineers.

Right up until the end, I didn't understand what "AI native" means, apart from it being a strange buzzword (and I say that as someone who's currently doing a PhD in AI). Numerous CVs also contain links to showcase projects or GitHub repositories. Unfortunately, these links often don't work. Or, in the case of git profiles, there has often been literally no activity at all over the past year.

I don't want to complain, and it's not a decisive indicator of whether a CV is good or bad, but it's a waste of time and also a missed opportunity to showcase something that belongs truly to you.

Even more people than last time seem unable to write a CV themselves. Perfect language (AKA boring and robotic language), perfectly tailored to our job advert. Nothing creative, nothing original. Some applicants actually seem to have copied our job advert and pasted it into an #LLM to generate a version of their CV optimised for our ad. That's not exactly the best start for a job interview, where we want to learn more about the people themselves and not about the LLMs they use.

Not saying you should embrace AI across the board, but I don't think there's a way to avoid dealing with it these days. In my very humble opinion, a senior dev should try to tackle things at the right level, and at least for me that means, above all, working locally. AI defining reqs, designing architecture, planning, writing, testing and deploying code, and measuring success is doomed at a business level. I just entered the ballot for next year's London Landmark Half Marathon taking place in April 2027. If I manage to get a place, this will be my second time running the #HalfMarathon. And it would be the first time I’ve run a city event more than once, as I'm not really a city runner.

I think we've been using a local GitLab CE instance for over a decade now and have only recently added a Forgejo deployment for some projects

Apart from the fact that Forgejo is simply brilliant - it is - migrating these projects from GitLab to Forgejo wasn't too difficult. The key is to script the entire migration and use the REST endpoints

Pipelines are a different story, but as Forgejo's actions are GitHub compatible, it's not too hard to find plenty of documentation on how to do it.

I’ve been using #Forgejo as a #Git repo server for a few days now for some of my personal & PhD projects and experiments.

And what can I say: I’m thrilled! I’m very familiar with #gitlab, but Forgejo has nothing to fear from the comparison! Of course, there's no feature parity, but it seems Forgejo/Gitea have simply focused on the essential aspects, and that works perfectly. Excellent performance, low resource footage, good CI/CD. On top of that, it’s fully FOSS, no ifs or buts!

There’s been an incredible amount of fresh snow over the last few days, so yesterday I just couldn't resist going on a short ski tour and taking three peaks in one go. 1300m elevation gain, fantastic slopes covered in fresh snow - and about four hours later, I was pretty exhausted but also very happy 😁

"Software Directive (2009/24/EC)" [1]

Article 6 odifies the original 1991 directive - explicitly grants the right to reverse engineer software for the purpose of achieving interoperability,

And we also have the Data Act from 2025, which is explicitly for IoT devices.

All in all this would be a nice little project, maybe ... 😃

I can totally relate to that!! Especially with new shoes, I'm always worried about how they'll feel on asphalt. Even though I try to avoid asphalt as much as possible, unfortunately you often can't quite avoid running at least a few kms on it in the end.
