The one point where I [em]really[/em] get hung up is this: if machines can in fact [em]think[/em]—which I doubt for reasons that are outside the scope of this post—would that not make it morally wrong for us to try to bend them to our will? What makes that different from slavery? I bring this up because it seems to be the argument supporting your position that LLM output doesn't constitute a derived work of its training data.

If I'm going to ship code, I need to be able to be able to answer for what that code does. The necessary level of understanding [em]can[/em] be achieved with LLM-generated code, but it involves [em]studging[/em] its output to be sure that every line—every statement—is understood. To me, it seems that the amount of work necessary to achieve that level of understanding negates any boost in prodictivity I may get from using the LLM in the first place, and it certainly doesn't justify the ethical cost.

I've been working on a fork of a large FOSS project lately. For me, the bottleneck hasn't been the actual writing of the code. More than half of my time has been spent [em]studying[/em] the existing code to understand how it works so I can figure out the best way to make my edits. An LLM can't just magically give me that understanding.

Also, when it comes the actual [em]writing[/em] of code, it's easier for me to express what I want in the unambiguous syntax of a programming language rather than the crude tool that is natural language. The latter I only use for communicating with other humans, and only because I lack a better tool for doing so. I'll freely admit that that last point is not universally true for everyone.

Also, I'll concede that the use of third-party libraries muddies the waters in terms of understanding how the code works. This is why I choose not to crucify those who [em]do[/em] use LLMs to write code. I just choose not to participate.

I'm sure everyone here has "the tech box": that box where you shove the miscelaneous cables and dongles and other crap that isn't currently being used but is too useful to just get rid of. In my case it had spilled over into [em]multiple[/em] boxes and had just become a bit of a nightmare.

Anyhow, my parents were getting rid of this guy, so we took it home with us. Katy and I just spent the past hour meticulously going over every single item in our various tech boxes and cataloging them into a system inspired by the one described in @[url=https://mamot.fr/users/pluralistic]Cory Doctorow[/url]'s book, Makers.* It's not quite so elaborate as in the book. It's just an org-mode document that tells me exactly which drawer each item is in—no fancy RFID tags, but they're not items with a lot of churn either, so it's fine. You just don't notice it because modern computers are so stupidly powerful.

There is a big caveat to this statement though: the latter requires the user to know [em]how[/em] to write such a script, or to have one convieniently handy. Plus, you have to weigh the effort of writing such a script against the amount of work it's going to save you.

Personally, I wouodn't trust an LLM not to hallucinate and subtly corrupt my work in a non-obvious way, but that's a judgement call and you might choose differently.

Also, this is perhaps not exactly what you're talking about, but as soon as a post federates to another server (because the poster has a legit follower there) the originating server is no longer in exclusive control of the content of that post, is it not?

Unless I'm fundamentally misunderstanding something here—which I'll admit is a possibility—a single misbehaving server could circumvent this entire system, could it not? Obviously, there's the option of defederating such a server, but you'd have to know it's happening first. It's not just about trusting your own server, but also every server you federate your posts to.

Am I way off base here? If so, I'd love to understand how.

Little by little I've been going more and more analog. That aside, it works really well. Completely invisible under normal lighting conditions and shows up really well under UV.

It's almost like the ink refuses to be picked up by the nib/feed.
