Or perhaps we could look at it the other way around: maybe the sheer amount of work involved in maintaining these repositories is why the maintainer stopped responding? Who knows ? :) In that case, closing my PRs was probably the right thing to do, wasn't it ?

At that point, though, we are mostly talking about **personal preferences**, and everyone will have a different idea of what the “right” value should be. You see my point ? Is there really much to debate there ?

Anyway, my point was mostly about the framing: there is a difference between “*this default does not suit my system*” and “*this is another NixOS shenanigan thing*”.

Defaults are often compromises, and NixOS generally tries not to diverge from upstream defaults without a good reason to do so. Most of the time, those defaults come from upstream projects in the first place. I do not think NixOS should override them unless there is a good technical reason specific to NixOS.

And no worries about the personal-account part, I simply reacted because I follow the #nixos tag, and I am also a contributor to the project, working for free. I was reacting to the technical claim only.

There is also a human side to this: casual remarks can sometimes be more hurtful than intended when they concern work that people have put a lot of unpaid time and care into.

Your post was just a convenient example of something I see quite often in open-source discussions...

On a more personal note, I find this framing a little unfair, especially towards people maintaining open-source projects in their spare time, for free, for both the happy users and the unhappy ones.

Before calling something “shenanigans”, it is probably worth checking where the behaviour actually comes from and why that default exists.

I did a bit of research too, and in this case, **it is not really a NixOS default at all**: it comes from systemd-journald. `SystemMaxUse` defaults to 10% of the filesystem, capped at 4G. So on a 40G filesystem, having roughly 4G of journal is pretty much exactly the expected behaviour.

And `/var/log` **does not simply** “keep on growing” forever either: journald automatically removes old archived journal files to stay within its size limits. The default of `MaxRetentionSec=0` merely means that there is no *time-based* expiration policy.

Setting `SystemMaxUse=400M` may of course be perfectly reasonable for a particular server. But that is a local policy choice, not necessarily a broken default that needs to be “fixed”.

More generally, I wish we were a little more curious about why defaults exist before presenting them as silly mistakes. **They are often the result of trade-offs, discussions, and maintenance work by people (those volunteers again!) whose criteria may simply be different from yours.**

After all, there are usually more brain cells in a community than in any one of us. :)

I would not tag this as a sign of toxicity, please. You can definitely find better examples elsewhere, but I don't think this was intentional. There are so many pull requests and so few reviewers, that sometimes this can happen, sadly. I have been there myself, so I can relate. It's also very easy to lose its commit bit that it does not help, but that another issue, not fully related.

I sincerely hope that your next interactions with the project will be better, if any. There are maintainers doing their best everyday, giving their time and energy for free, regardless of the rest. Stay for those, just need to learn a bit who they are.
