Being anti-TV and anti-radio has allowed me to distance myself from much of the constant messaging that seems to dominate modern life over here. Without these things playing in the background, I’ve come to appreciate the peace and quiet that comes with choosing what I allow into my mind.<br/><br/>As you could probably guess from how much I love spending time in nature and meditating, I’m drawn to a slower, more intentional way of living. I find comfort in silence, in being present, and in connecting with the world around me rather than constantly consuming information and entertainment. Nature and meditation offer me something that modern technology often seems to take away, the sense of stillness, clarity, and genuine connection with myself. <br/><br/>Sometimes, I genuinely struggle to understand how most people manage to keep up with all the noise of modern life. Between television, radio, advertisements, social media, and the endless stream of digital distractions, it feels as though there is very little room left for silence or independent thought. I find it exhausting just thinking about it. <br/><br/>Perhaps I’ve simply grown accustomed to a quieter existence, but I can’t help wondering why so many people accept this constant overstimulation as the new normal. Honestly, the whole thing makes me want to retreat even further into nature and enjoy the peace of being disconnected. I still go to work, eat, sleep, take care of what needs to be taken care of, and participate in ordinary life. But when it comes to how I choose to spend my remaining time, I increasingly find myself inwards toward meditation rather than things like video games or other forms of entertainment.<br/><br/>I&#39;ve become almost strangely bored with video games. It&#39;s not necessarily because the games themselves are bad. It&#39;s because I keep noticing the same pattern in all of them: the enjoyment arises, stays for a while, and then fades. You become absorbed in a story, achieve something, explore a world, or simply have fun playing, but eventually the story ends, the achievement becomes ordinary, or you simply lose interest and put the game away.<br/><br/>Even in something as open-ended as Minecraft, where you can theoretically continue creating and exploring indefinitely, there eventually comes a point where the experience no longer gives you the same enjoyment. The excitement fades, and you move on to something else.<br/><br/>I&#39;ve started noticing the same principle in ordinary life as well. Experiences arise and pass. Excitement arises and passes. Entertainment arises and passes. Even things that feel deeply enjoyable cannot simply remain as they are.<br/><br/>Because I&#39;ve become more aware of this, I find myself asking why I should spend so much of my limited time chasing experiences that I already know will eventually end, especially when I have discovered something I genuinely enjoy that doesn&#39;t depend on constantly finding another source of entertainment.<br/><br/>For me, that is meditation.<br/><br/>I don&#39;t meditate because I am forcing myself to give up everything enjoyable. Quite the opposite actually: I find something genuinely satisfying in sitting down and meditating. I would rather spend an hour in meditation than an hour playing a game, not because games are inherently bad, but because meditation has become more meaningful to me.<br/><br/>Perhaps what has changed is that I have become much more conscious of impermanence. I can enjoy an experience while it is happening without pretending that it will last. But when I compare that temporary enjoyment with the wish to recognize the nature of mind, meditation simply feels like a better use of my time.<br/><br/>I still participate in ordinary life. I work, eat, sleep, talk with people, and do what needs to be done. But I increasingly don&#39;t feel the same need to fill every free moment with entertainment. When I have a choice, I often find that I would rather sit quietly and meditate.<br/><br/>In that sense, I don&#39;t feel that I&#39;m missing out on entertainment. My ThinkPad also has two ssd drives, so I decided to wipe one of them and install FreeBSD, and using it as my daily driver.<br/><br/>I used to be on kolektiva.social a while back.
