I remember you had a post about having a headache as a withdrawal effect. I normally have it too if I cut coffee too suddenly, without a gradual dosage decrease.

It was so cool to eventually discover armodafinil as an alternative, which unfortunately available only in some locations. So I'm back to coffee again too.

Got any yabs, btw? I'm interested in outgoing speed.

I've tried the test download files from the looking glass pages. If I measure from Moldova, the download speed from FI is ~11 MiB/s, and from NL it's less than ~1 MiB/s for some reason.

If I measure from the US, the speed from FI is ~19 MiB/s, and from NL is ~30 MiB/s.

Anyway, it would be nice to know the possible upper bound.

This is... definitely one of the weirdest and creepiest things I've ever seen. Even if there weren't any of these classic horror effects, it's almost hard to believe that the entire video isn't just pure artistic fiction that intentionally disorients a viewer entirely. Or I'm just not wanting to believe. Quote from the Patreon page: "I create horror documentaries centered around dark internet stories and mysteries".

quoting
nevent1q…tdrx

⚠️ Disclaimer: This video explores disturbing allegations, unsettling online behavior, and sensitive subject matter involving minors.

smartschoolboy9: An Internet Rabbit Hole

In April 2024, a Reddit user uncovered a disturbing collection of Instagram accounts that appeared to be operated by children. But a closer look at their unsettling content raised serious questions about who was really behind them and what was happening out of sight.

What followed was a descent into one of the internet’s most bizarre and disturbing mysteries: smartschoolboy9, a rabbit hole that continues to raise questions to this day.

Video Credit: youtube.com/@NickCrowley

Legal porn is often not allowed to be hosted by some hosting providers, which is far from obvious to end users. DMCA-related risk increase for operators. Mobile app devs are risking being partially censored by app stores which may want to label the apps with 18+... It may become even more chaotic. At least some of these lead to legal original content makers being blocked semi-automatically with all their content.

I think fighting legal porn in particular is not sustainable, but something needs to be changed. If we transform it properly, I think that will be a win-win: those who don't want nsfw will see it less often, and those who want to upload it—won't have issues with it.

I proposed to start with adding a single standard distinction and require non-porn-focused clients to ignore all porn-specific events (and still make porn distinct from the too general "nsfw" category):

https://github.com/nostr-protocol/nips/pull/2501/changes

Relays and Blossom servers could also explicitly allow/disallow porn; clients could take it into account.

Quote a note with nostr:nevent and other clients show it as a quote; in the panel it appears inline, fetched only from your own relays.

Replies now also go to the read relays of the person you answer (NIP-65), so strict anti-spam relays on their side don't swallow them. The reading side I deliberately left out: fetching a page's comments from every commenter's own relays would let any commenter see who reads the thread.

And the first run is calmer: while your signer is asked, the panel says so, and why the prompt names the website you are on. Decline, and it stops asking.

Thanks to codonaft (npub1alp…rg94) for pushing on all of this.

Firefox: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/nostrcomments/
Chrome: https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/nostrcomments/ebmgdpicceaencegknannfaljhbfgido

I don't think they even claim that.

In any case, DHTs have a much easier task if they're storing one address for each node in the network. On IPFS it would be an address for each file (or worse if they're chunked). It cannot work.

I wish they put more effort in explaining how their routing stuff works, since that is really the only thing that matters. The last time I checked they had this thing called "bitswap" that in practice meant that every node was at all times sending a bazillion messages to every other node announcing what files they had, meanwhile I couldn't send a file between two computers in the same LAN even after I manually told one to connect to the other with an IP address and node pubkey. It was ridiculous.

Also, this is entirely not technical; I worry about this kind of ghosting:

quoting
nevent1q…x4jz
Nobody got zapped? Is it FOSS?

Enabling DNSSEC for nip05.site if possible, makes sense.

> or CORS headers

That then appears to be a workaround for those who don't follow NIP-05 properly. The TLS cert requirement for clearnet could also be added to the spec (as well as I expect it won't be properly followed too).

I worry about TLS in particular; it's a weak way to verify authenticity but still a way. With a proxy, it's not clear whether the response was authentic.

What would make a lot of sense, though, is proxying onion/i2p/fips/dnn/etc., because their authenticity is verifiable. This would make NIP-05 work in clearnet for domains that can't be taken down in exchange for trusting nip05.site. But that, of course, opens a question of why not have a more general proxy that could proxy non-clearnet relays as well.

quoting
nevent1q…d7hu
Writing up Q&As, which includes a "Why DNN and not XYZ?"

Also made a comparison table (probably need to update it more)

And considering what I wrote before in terms of new benefits I realized, and the below text you might read, I'll also add another doc mentioning use-cases/applications (since there's a lot).

Side note:
I also just realized (so I need to update the doc with this) that assuming DNN becomes mainstream, a search engine based on it is possible, without needing websites to put special code in their website to be indexed by a system, resulting in the ability for anyone to create a competing search engine without relying on historical indexing of a single entity.

What this means:
Let's assume DNN was there from the start, and Google did it's thing and became the best search engine, though they started censoring their search results and modifying it to fit their and others' needs, corruption, etc (all of which happened), another search engine would appear, have almost all the same data, and doesn't do BS actions/behaviour like we see with Google, and people start using it without any friction, resulting in an immediate competitive strike, which ultimately results in a healthier system and everyone benefits.

Side note, the second coming:
sudo pacman -S vlc?
sudo yay -S vlc?

nah, let's go with
sudo nabtaAbove -S vlc
sudo nabobZoo -S vlc
etc

Gist:
nostr based, user based, creation of list of repos to install shit on your linux)

That's be great to have one day =3

If you mean something like the complexity of this situation, how Apple is, for example, dependent on something else that makes their app submission so (far from the first time) ridiculous, that they are also hostage in this situation in some way—I don't argue that. I mean, though, that the classic postmodern kind of satire is still appropriate in this situation. If we'd talk to them directly there, that would be a different case; that wouldn't have a change to help.

I'm not a literalist there; I don't actually mean that Apple is fascist, just in case it's not clear to whoever reads it.

Nostr is not there yet.

Browsers and web frontend standards deserve full reimplementation from scratch, as the best example I'm aware of. Something needs to emerge there, something much cleaner and more efficient, and something that won't be technically possible to enshitify with intrusive ads/popups/captchas/etc., combined with increasing regulations-related nonsense.

Nostr hasn't yet progressed any close to the bold collective frustration compared to this area. So it's super challenging to build something new AND *sustainable* like Nostr. It's not only about tech; people value, for example, the fact that there's some relatively massive infrastructure already running by independent entities; such stuff doesn't happen arbitrarily.

Viewing art is always also co-creating it. I think we'll keep decoding new meanings, and learn about the world we live in from it.

Original authors of whatever deep enough art often prefer to collapse interpretations to whatever they've intended, like if they were denying the "death of the author". Yet I think we complement art not with something completely arbitrary; there are valid meanings and adequate predictions in particular. All of them are coming from the unconscious, both from authors and viewers.

Wachowskis, for example, probably never directly stated it in the interviews, but various forms of electronic despotism we're living today were definitely one of the valid predictions. The Prince tried to warn us short after the release of the movie:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iy7i9ru7HB8

In the role of a fool, it may be the safest to say some dangerous truths in the face of authorities, for example.

A few more details then.

#p2p #cdn #blossom #devstr

More precisely, p2p-media-loader is actually used in PeerTube: it's a wrapper that combines the usage of traditional CDN + WebTorrent, and they definitely have this complex design not out of the blue; others didn't really work.

https://github.com/Novage/p2p-media-loader#how-it-works

In an ideal world, I wish it was just normal Torrent (which is at least impossible from browser engines).

And with just WebTorrent (Torrent on top of WebRTC)—there are some WebRTC-related traps:

- at least the warm-up is too slow, according to p2p-media-loader devs

- due to privacy settings or/and ISPs behind certain kind of NATs, one may not have a functioning WebRTC-based peering at all (only connections through TURN, which is not supported in p2p-media-loader; because that would be an unnecessary complication since they have to use the CDN anyway).

There are more. There's no way to escape the WebTorrent tracker and use DHT due to some browser limitations, and at the same time you can't have too many of the trackers (iOS/Safari in particular may aggressively close WebSocket connections out of the blue if it decides there are too many of them, and it can be challenging to handle this properly if at all).

These are just a few things I recalled from when I was setting up vidstack player + p2p-media-loader on my website.

In two words, thing that will work in practice is (an event kind 10063 server list) of Blossom-based CDNs (at least for warm up) + p2p-media-loader (only helpful in case of multiple concurrent connections) + stable 1Gbps+ network.

Other paths are known frustrating traps; it's hard to even test/debug this stuff because you can't easily simulate the identical weird NATs some ISPs have.

Yet due to repetitive irresponsible Blossom servers use, it seems like nobody's currently willing to maintain them, specifically for nsfw. Or due to related political age verification cringe, for example: this may affect hosting providers / domain registrars at some point, suddenly requiring KYC from blossom admins as a result, if not worse. DCMA takedown letters are a risk as well. Or it's due to whatever other moral reasons too, I dunno.

I guess some of us believe that we shouldn't focus on this content right now, that this stuff should go last. Soft erotic nsfw possibly acceptable to many here, though. To me personally, if whatever legal nsfw content is properly distinguishable with the nsfw tag—this still should be okay. Whoever who specifically produces original legal content and publishes their nostr events with the tag could run a blossom server for themselves and for likely minded people; nobody can technically disallow that here. Some small fee from producers will also make it reasonable to maintain the server.

> dudes with no tact sending DMs

DMs probably not worth reading here right now for this purpose. I've seen pronouns/gender spec proposals, and I think it's useful here: an nsfw-oriented client could have ignored all DMs from those who didn't set their pronouns or have an irrelevant one. As well as disallow sending any DMs until the pronoun is not yet set. As well as adding the proper nsfw/content-warning tag on every event (both public and the DMs even) and ignoring all non-nsfw events (which will be simultaneously an incentive to not publish events without the appropriate tag at all). WoT and whatever would help too but they are ironically almost empty of those who'd want to send such DMs (which is not necessary a bad thing).

If we stop fighting this stuff and transform it properly, those who don't want nsfw content will see it less often as a result. I think it's a win-win.

Will we possibly have nsfw-specific blossom media server(s) too? Original legal content makers are lacking them, at least Naked Nomad (npub1kd2…dwuh) I believe is interested.

Is the website FOSS? Or planned to be FOSS? What about building it based on Nostube source code? AFAIK it already has some webtorrent-based p2p integration (used in PeerTube as well) already which is important for concurrent gooners that will be sharing too few blossom servers in too few locations right now. And the player just works (I believe it's one of the most painful things to debug on every single platform ever).

https://github.com/flox1an/nostube

That was intentional: I want to leave zero of my public data on their forum because I think that none of the centralized platforms, especially those that are involved in such obviously unethical activities, deserve any of my data.

They banned me because I referred this nostr thread from the only thread that I was able to successfully publish: the self-introductory one.

And yeah, this is the awesome extension! I finally was able to publish my concerns about the seller. So, just in case:

quoting
nevent1q…0pcf
Too many red flags arise with this seller. It's not clear what exactly this seller is selling here: is DMCA-ignored + blacklist-ignored applicable to all their options?

Their terms currently state: "In the event that any server IP address assigned to the Client is listed in SpamHaus, Abuse.ch, URLHaus, or any comparable blacklist, the Service Provider reserves the right to immediately suspend the affected server without prior notice.

...

The Service Provider shall only process Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) notices or equivalent copyright infringement claims originating from within the jurisdiction of the Slovenia. Notices submitted from outside this jurisdiction shall not be processed."

https://web.archive.org/web/20261004120931/https://0xhost.com/terms-and-conditions

Yet their main page states: "The questions you actually have" "What happens when somebody files an abuse report?" "It stops with us. We do not forward it to you and we do not take your server down over it. That is what bulletproof means here, and it is the reason most of our customers moved."

https://web.archive.org/web/20261004120754/https://0xhost.com/

Which is a contradiction already.

Their current cheapest option is "VPS Start 14.99 EUR/mo", which is labeled as "bulletproof" in their dashboard. Does it include DMCA-ignored and blacklist-ignored?

Previously they also stated: "we can ignore SpamHaus, including SBL, FOR AN ADDITIONAL FEE."

https://archive.is/ESdKX#post-19827475

DCMA and blacklist-ignored is actually a separate service? How much does it cost if so? Why is their cheapest option labeled "bulletproof" on their purchasing page, in their dashboard, if so? Where's the checkbox that enables the additional service?

Also, their status page, they've mentioned "status.0xhost.net"—it doesn't resolve to any IP address.

https://archive.ph/JzICR#post-20209133

Too many red flags.

And I wish I could directly and publicly contact this seller, I'm sure they will have something to say. But "thanks" to #blackhatworld gatekeepers for censoring me—they've just made themselves irresponsible dilettantes in this case; it seems it's just impossible to start the related dialogue with a potential scammer from new accounts on your forum.

I'm shocked that the admins just don't care; they removed all my messages without trying to edit them to comply with their own absurd rules or whatever.

How many users have been facing this issue? I wonder what younger generations are telling them if they ever create an account on their website: they definitely don't expect they need to act as some absurd rules interpreter dinosaur—who the hell has time on that? They expect that their forum form does this job, that it detects the quoted OP links (which, for some reason, they have ironically prohibited from posting) and prevents from posting the message automatically, with some comprehensible reason.

nevent1q…3t7c

You forward them to the client and wait at most whatever time is given by the underlying provider, right? If the client doesn't respond in time, is it a guaranteed suspension? Is there any location or underlying provider that is less vulnerable to this kind of attack?

Thanks!

Whatever tech stack you choose or FOSS project you decide to use/contribute to doesn't automatically mean you join to support the particular project leader's political agenda.

Same with writing in a particular programming language—it's not identical to supporting or hating a particular minority. Or using satellites for internet access is not agreeing with Elon on something. Even paying taxes is not identical to agreeing with your government. Such black-and-white thinking is a sign of immaturity.

We can't avoid all interdependencies with everyone we disagree with. We'd be something different from a society otherwise: some much more dysfunctional scattered pieces, not interacting with each other at all.

Be your own leader; express your independent positions on things. And don't overdo conflicts: productive conflicts help us to discover more truths, not to separate us even more. Especially when the other side is under too heavy pressure already, better focus more on what possibly unites us rather than separates.

#politics
I remember I was almost punched in the face for attempting to meditate on a similar question. Now I hear Mark Passio's voice emotionally criticizing relativistic morality in the background.

#philosophy #morality

quoting
nevent1q…32mk

Who is morally worse?

ABH3PO (npub1cgd…kfex) you're kinda simplifying life for me by creating these polls, thanks; I was planning to record a video that touches something like this, but tbh I'm not into recording that much, and at the same time I don't feel like I'm capable enough to express certain ideas in the least distorted ways when I'm limited only to text posts.

TLDR: Those who are capable of understanding the immorality of their actions, wherever they are in the social hierarchies, are probably acting the most immoral ways. Others are, poetically speaking, hypnotized, manipulated NPCes/children/slaves; actual complex enough morality is kind of inapplicable to them, irrelevant. Projecting the capability to understand morality on them may even make things worse.

Longer version: I still think that context matters a lot here; if you mean US-like locations as the context (where you still can relatively openly communicate and collaborate, openly discuss and decide why something is reasonably immoral), the answer is basically that relativistic morality indeed became damaging to Western society; so the immoral order executor is in a morally worse position.

But if you mean some of the most corrupt countries today—the situation is more confusing: those who are already trapped themselves in the premature choice to serve a corrupt government long before they could have a chance to make any independent conscious choices will endanger their family if they choose to suddenly revolt individually towards them. Collectively they technically still can revolt against immoral orders but not individually; I think that would be both ineffective and less moral because the dramatic outcomes might even make government propaganda stronger in this case.

Another way to look at it: we have autonomous vehicles that "decide" whom to kill in case if they can't stop; they do their best to "decide" according the way they were programmed. But the ultimate decision is on those who programmed them; so if they make an immoral "choice", whom to blame? An engineer, a company, a machine itself? Do these machines somehow remind, poetically speaking, the hypnotized NPC guys trapped in their premature police/military career choices in their corrupt governments? Kinda, except these are machines with no real subjectivity, and they don't have families as well. The scary thing is the machines could be modified to be used as aggressive military machines, so those who originally designed them wouldn't have any idea they would be used that way.

I'd be glad to hear anything that can change my mind.
I mean that attackers still have limited resources to run full memory scans and dumps, and if they know that particular regions are used for sensitive information, that simplifies the problem for them. While with memory used for arbitrary data (+obfuscated with techniques like KASLR/SLAB freelist randomization/etc.) and used, for a limited time, for sensitive decrypted information too—that must be harder to find these regions.

I worry whether it's potentially ironically even more vulnerable specifically for firmware attackers (of whatever related components and the TEEs themselves).

My apologies if yes). A few things I want to clarify: I identify the worldviews of most of my mutual followers somewhere in the [materialist-agnostic, materialist-atheist] spectrum, and I do my best so the stuff I write is both coherent and inclusive to everyone who regularly reads my posts: I encourage what I believe are their healthy manifestations, and I might occasionally highlight the unhealthy ones (only when I'm super sure I understood the situation). Depending on the intensity of the unhealthy ones I might consciously come into the contact with the dangerous possibility of "becoming a monster myself" for a little while (the thing that resonate with your post "Thinking Narrowly"); that's exactly what I'm doing in a series of my posts where I directly criticize those who contribute to nihilism by randomly throwing pejoratives without properly understanding what other's position actually is, and ironically I myself reflecting their behavior by using the pejorative ("New Agey magical-smegical"), which without proper context might also hurt you, since it's almost clearly obvious you're not in the exactly the same worldviews spectrum as most of my mutual followers. I hope I'm clear; I'm not into actually becoming a "monster myself" and I'm not into contributing to your nihilism or urge to self-isolate for an unauthentic reason. I'm going through the challenge of how to also include your possible perspective so my posts would be more neutral to you if you decide to read them. Let me know if I'm not clear somewhere.

If people disagree, someone can't decrypt the messages of someone else. That's a fork in the group state, it's quite a similar problem to Bitcoin.
Contrary to Bitcoin, in most group messaging systems you know exactly who the group members are, which makes things easier.
The main hurdle for marmot specifically is that there is no central server whom you can trust with ordering messages properly. Every client has to be a "fully validating node" and create "the blockchain" of messages so that they're in the exact same order as everyone else.
Cordn takes a different approach, each group has one central coordinator who is trusted with message ordering. This massively simplifies the consensus problem, and reduces the amount of complexity in the client. This likely means cordn is relatively more stable than marmot if the coordinator is honest. And cordn uses lots of fancy tricks to make this central coordinator as blind and trust minimized as possible, and easy to run even in a browser tab.
This is somewhat similar to Bitcoin CoinJoin, almost impossible to do fully decentralized (only coin shuffle achieved it in theory) so everyone built centralized coordination models (even joinmarket) and then Wasabi optimized the coordinator to be blind and trust minimized.
So to some extend Marmot is trying to achieve the impossible, decentralized encrypted group messaging, many wizards keep telling us this is too difficult and probably impossible to achieve. But let's see, it smells to me like we're close on actually making it work...

Like Burning Man, I guess.

I remember I engaged in some music festival where people danced completely naked with art on their bodies. We talked to each other in a bar. This is definitely the appropriate context.

Somehow due to the art, it seems like people are dressed until you take a closer look. Depending on how exactly it's organized, I can highly recommend it; it was a fun, trippy experience for me.

I don't know whether it's effective for dating; I went there for a different purpose.

Looks like you're coming from some unusual recontextualization of the vague term "obscurity".

The way you initially stated it looked to many of us like "all obscurity levels are adequate security for a security-critical project" and I hope that's not what you meant.

Traditionally we distinguish these levels by not calling some of them obscurity at all.

These categories are distinct for a purpose; they have different properties. Steganography and obfuscation make systems harder to study and maintain. That doesn't happen if you increase some PoW requirement, for example.

Both make systems harder to break, yet one of them is less effective; it's useful only due to a synergy of combining both.

#CakeWallet collapsed for me pretty quickly 🌚

https://github.com/cake-tech/cake_wallet/issues/528#issuecomment-5875801676

Also, the selected Dart + Flutter tech stack is somewhat creepy. Are #Dart devs aware of what they are running?

The build system attempts to send some telemetry by default + write things directly to the flutter directory. Looks like Google decided that all these are acceptable.

It fails to build as a Gentoo ebuild, thanks to its sandbox: flutter is a completely different package, and the network is not available during the build.

There are also attempts to establish port 80 connections in some dependence(s), which are impossible on my system, where all outgoing port 80 connections are disabled due to abusive ISPs interceptions with their ads/malware:

https://github.com/MrCyjaneK/simplybs/pull/7
Overall experience is nice. I'm not good at saying good things, but I use your web frontend often enough, must be for a reason.

2. I see you struggle with regular outages. It's weird, taking into account that hosting providers you use are pretty mainstream. BTW main page currently redirects to https://yakihonne.com/unsupported/index

3. It's hard to enumerate exactly one thing.

Killswitch for DMs. I think all non-DM-focused clients should have it; otherwise we load relays with unnecessary repetitive requests (especially those who think they will "fix" the issue by installing all kinds of clients), they rate-limit our requests/connections, and people possibly lose some messages.

quoting
nevent1q…hcx5

i thought nostr could solve the problem of having to install 42 apps for chatting with frens & family. i now have 69 and they STILL don't talk to each other and nobody can tell me why. it's just me shouting into the relay void, hoping that planets align and the other end uses the same brotocol. i just wanted to send some fart noises to my bros for shits and giggles :Sadge: is that a big ask?

For some of us it possibly becomes even harder to understand what's wrong with DM every time. I personally may allow signing DM-specific in various clients, not because I want them there but to avoid possible bugs. I see DM notifications in your client, but I don't really want them, I'm happy with Armada right now.

I'd love to have kind 10000 mute list "word" tag support and kind 10006 blocked relays as well.

Having a "my (sub)thread—my rules" kind of moderation option would be relevant today as well:

quoting
nevent1q…x70c
Another approach: a blurred comment with the text "OP reported the profile as spam". A hover or click unblures the comment (+possibly a profile pic). Many comments will be ignored just due to a familiar profile pic. I haven't tested fart noises delivery reliability yet though; I'm happy with just text messages for now.

I've created a private one here https://uid.ovh/dashboard and added it here https://app.nostrmail.org/settings/identities but can't receive a confirmation email from GH, for example.

I took a brief look; the UI idea is cute.

I hope to not be overwhelming with the inquiries; let me know if I am.

Does it appear to be privacy-respecting and with no lock-in? Is it possibly FOSS in the future?

Is it designed to store things only in browser, and as the tuno files on disk, and never to sync over network?

An obvious question arises: what about storing nostr events in it? Or any standardized things (which I'm not aware of any better). Not asking as some nostr cult leader, there are a few fundamental things I'm not happy about with the protocol, but I think a lot of stuff is useful for your problem, already solved in an adequate way. Even for offline-only software, if you're targeting it.

I think storing things in the standardized events will make your software more competitive in multiple ways: users will be more confident to use it because there would no be a soft lock-in (besides the usual hard lock-in people experience in projects with no takeout/export button, there's also always a possibility of the "it's a goodbye letter, we're out of business, here's how you can export your jsons" thing, which leaves users with incompatible, non-standard, hardly useful stuff out of the blue; it's problematic even for FOSS projects), and there are lots of things would be possible (almost) out of the box (like private sync over network or share/collaboration even).
