privacy advocates and disability rights advocates, I feel, have a lot in common. Making sure electronic devices that can record audio and video and are present in the public sphere – yes, I am broadening this here to devices other than just smart glasses – are safe and trustworthy is in our common interest.

I dread any framing that pits us against one another. Any such framing benefits only one side: Meta and other irresponsible, untrustworthy tech companies.

The problem is, these devices are (currently) built by companies that do not deserve our trust; they have proven that time and again. Meta planned to release a "feature" it knew is a massive privacy issue when NGOs and privacy groups were distracted:

Today I learned that in LibreWolf (npub1vpu…608s) I can type "translate" in the URL bar and get to a text translation UI.

This is powered by a local model and part of the Firefox translation thingy. I guess it must work the same way in Firefox?

Anyway, this is great. Local model, pretty solid translations, now possible to use directly to translate copy-pasted text snippets, not just text on a website.
