As I mentioned in the introduction, new registrations are currently on hold on mastodon.design until further notice, due to the overwhelming number of registration attempts by LLM-generated accounts. People who want to join our server now have to ask for an invite by email.

📢 August 2026 #MastodonDesignAnnouncement

Dear members,

After a two-month hiatus, the monthly announcements are back! As you’ve probably noticed, the two main changes of the past few months are the upgrade to the long-awaited version 4.6 of Mastodon, which brings some new features, and the fact that registrations on our server are now by invitation only, due to the growing number of LLM-generated account signup attempts.

But as always, let’s first take a look at our server’s stats.

📉 As we crossed our current plan 48 GB limit a few days ago, I asked Hugo Gameiro (npub1r30…8lle) from masto.host to run the `tootctl status remove` command on our server.

And guess what? It cleaned more than 8 GB of data, which allowed me to temporarily downgrade our subscription by removing 1 extra resources add-on! I’ll probably have to add it again in a few weeks, but at least that’s some money saved.

📢 December 2025 #MastodonDesignAnnouncement

Dear members,

This month is particularly intense for me so far, and I’m a little exhausted to be honest. I’m going to spend the holidays with my family and try to get some rest. I hope you also find time for yourself and your loved ones. But before that, here is December’s announcement, two weeks late. Better late than never!

With a few lines of CSS, I managed to replace the default icon with a heart to hijack the use of this role to turn it into a “Supporter” badge visible on their profile (at least on the Mastodon Web UI).

⬆️ Thanks to Hugo Gameiro (npub1r30…8lle), our server has been upgraded to Mastodon v4.4!

I activated one of the new features called “Allow external sites to see your Mastodon server as a traffic source”, which means that, as Tom :damnified: (npub1u0z…6s43) wrote here https://metalhead.club/@thomas/114818655947733518:

> If somebody clicks a link in a Mastodon post, the link target owner (such as the news site operator) can see that a user from that instance has visited their website. They do only get the instance domain. No information about the user!

📢 #MastodonDesignAnnouncement

After a few days hiking and camping with some friends in the Alps and Auvergne, and after taking my bearings on my new laptop—a second-hand Framework running Linux—following the death of my long-trusted 12-year-old MacBook Pro, I’m finally taking some time to write this month’s announcement.

Thanks for your kind words and for being an active member of our community 🥰

Unfortunately, we can't install Tangerine UI on the server because masto.host only allows us to change the admin settings accessible via the web UI, I don't have access to the code.

But you can add the custom CSS for yourself if you use browser extension as it is explained in the documentation!

Mastodon.design is now definitely part of the #Fedipact – the instances blocking Zuckerberg’s Threads.net: https://fedipact.veganism.social/?v2

📑 If some of you are upset by this decision, I invite you to do your own research and read this page https://freefediverse.org/index.php/Nightmares. Then if you still think that it is unjustified, the good news is that you can simply move to another server.

To inform everyone of this decision, I updated our About page to make our list of Moderated servers public: https://mastodon.design/about
