I realized that because the material I'm cutting in is transparent I can film through it using a microscope while cutting! Well, kinda, it's not the proper setup but I can mount the stylus upside down and drag a piece of polycarbonate over it and watch it cut! And from that it becomes very clear that there is a clear directionality to the embossing performance of the stylus because the tip is not actually perfectly symmetric. It seems to assume a kind of natural threefold symmetry during polishing?

#RecordLathe

Did you know that you can buy these funky little "flat" CRT displays on aliexpress for like 25 bucks? They run on 12V and take composite video input. ok, I have acquired a cheap USB powered "Lithophane Led Panel" from aliexpress and I'm gonna see if I can turn it into a scan light for camera scanning. It's a lot brighter than my current light table, so this should really help get sharper and less noisy scans. the CRI probably sucks, but I'm only doing black and white so I don't really care.

I need some help from some kind of USB nerd here. Is there a class compliant way to connect a display over USB? And I mean actual USB, not display port alt mode.
According to the USB people there is a "USB Bulk Display Protocol Device Class" whose standard is maintained by VESA. But I can't find that anywhere and it isn't even mentioned on VESA's website. Is this actually a thing? Is this actually supported anywhere?

EDIT: I think I'm gonna look into GUD

can anyone here who touches technical drawings on the regular give me some feedback on this? It's really only meant as a reference to hand in along a STEP file for CNC machining to let them know where to put threads. Keep in mind this was done using the freecad tech draw stuff so possibilities are kinda… limited but I still kinda want it to look nice and also be helpful for somebody who might want to machine this thing manually on a lathe and mill. And while I've looked at a lot of technical drawings I'm also not super familiar with all the standards and conventions.

wheeee! I've successfully made a glass PCB! 0.1mm copper foil laminated onto a microscope slide using two component epoxy and a hot roller laminator, coated with cheap aliexpress dry film photo resist and etched in copper chloride.

turns out that most of my struggles during etching came from my bad exposure setup. The light source was way too diffuse and I *way* over exposed the photo resist. Going from 7.5 minute exposures down to 20 seconds really helped and switching from a very diffuse UV exposure box to a UV spot light mounted around 50cm away finally got me to an acceptable result.

Of course the one that ended up working was on my ugliest piece of copper on glass laminate but whatever. It finally works!

#diypcb #electronics

so, I was talking to a friend about electrochromic paper, paper that changes color in response to electricity, after seeing some old fax machine and audio recorder patents that mentioned it.

They use potassium ferrocyanide mixed with potassium cyanide (yikes…) which turns paper black when electricity flows through it. I tried it with just potassium ferrocyanide and it kinda worked, but sucked.
But that got me thinking about prussian blue, the pigment created in blueprints/cyanotype. It can exist in two different oxidation states, one of them is colorless and the other is blue. Could you electrochemically reduce the blue pigment into the colorless version?

You can! As long as the paper is slightly damp you can rest it on top of a conductive surface (I used a piece of SMD stencil) connected to around 25-30V and run the ground lead over the paper which will leave a white line in the pigment! It doesn't seem to be reversible though, or at least I can't get any current to flow in the opposite direction…

It's a three axis machine, one rotary axis for the table and two linear axis for moving the head left and right and up and down. It's not really sensitive to external noise but it is sensitive to vibrations. Running a desk fan on the same table is definitely audible. All the motors are vibration isolated with 3d printed TPU dampers.
