My Mac was running hot and sure enough, something (I forget what) was spinning in the background. So I went to the settings list of which apps are allowed to run in background (and which actually are). I guess I must have at some point authorized all of them? Anyhow, in 2026, it looks like a list of adversaries. I kicked almost everything off the list unless there was a clear and obvious benefit to me.

I really don't have any preferences. I picked CBOR because it's a clean superset of JSON and I thought it would be easy. This will be the first alternate Flattener implementation and I suspect I'll discover things that make me want to change the interface. Protobufs is an obvious candidate. Also Avro because it's on a lot of big busy Kafkas streams.

In principle I’d agree with you, but my experience with the RAWs from Pixel cameras, as opposed to the JPGs that come out of the camera app, has been disappointing. It seems that the computational-photography engine in the phone is pretty good at extracting all the value from what is after all a small-lens/small-sensor micro-camera. Put another way, on the Pixel, RAW+Lightroom doesn’t typically get me better results than JPG+Lightroom.

Hard to imagine there's much out there that still needs it.

BTW, want to say that modern phone-cams are freaking excellent - it was *really* dark when this was taken - Pixel 10, no flash - and it’s only very lightly touched up in Lightroom. The picture would have technically impossible on any camera not so long ago.

Startup… I run the native-Mac version, it lives in my Dock and I start it once and keep it running until next restart. But when I do re-start after rebooting or because I’ve fiddled with .emacs, it comes up almost instantly.
I've never dragged a file onto it. C-x C-f FTW
Large file with syntax highlighting… I edit large files sometimes, where by large I mean a few M, but the big ones usually don't have syntax highlighting and the ones with highlighting typically aren't that large.
