I think a hawk fell on him from above and killed him instantly. He was too big for the bad bird to carry away, but something disturbed it before it could eat more than a bite. <br/>Yesterday was overcast and quite windy, with a storm system moving in. Birds depend really heavily on other birds to spot predators, and on windy days the chickens can’t hear the alarm calls from the robins, etc. Bey was the outcast and he would definitely be the easiest to target. I can’t think of what else would have disturbed the hawk other than one of my raven friends, so I’m grateful to them. <br/>I buried him in a little grassy strip near his coop, with the very last branch of small but ripe red raspberries. He has a valerian planted on top, and of course, the Giant Metal Chicken Beyoncé watching over him now. <br/>I cried and cried. He was the very last of the first flock we raised, and he had a lot of PTSD from all the near misses he scraped through in his three years. He tried so hard to be a good head rooster — whenever That One Hen, there’s always one, would lead the flock out of the garden and down the road for an escape, he would come stand at the front door and crow nonstop until I came to herd them back. Once he got sick and the infection got into his leg joint, but I captured him and treated him with antibiotics for a week. (He never forgave me, lol.) <br/>He was a mean little terrorist, too. He would stalk the other humans, especially my kid. He ambushed me a few times, but I’ve got timing and I’d just boot him with my toe as he flew in to attack me and that would settle it for six more months. He only weighed like three pounds and I simply couldn’t ever take him seriously as a threat. It comes on, at very dim ivory color, from 3-6 pm every day - so it’s on when they go to bed, and when I shut the door they can still see to eat or whatever, but it’s so dim they can sleep through it if they want. I’m not EggMaxxxing as much as our nights are too long and the hens are too hungry without their nightlight! <br/>I tried little cheap rechargeable LED lights, but the cold drains the battery, don’t bother. Then when I first set up this corded light, I had it on too bright and the whole flock got extremely confused. She pulled through somehow, going through a huge chunk of our savings but making a complete recovery. She was in the equine hospital for, iirc, ten days. <br/>But she made it back home to her donkey, and she adores the four meals a day routine I’ve adopted to get all of her meds and supplements in her. She’s 22 years old now, and the big poisoning definitely turned her into an old lady. But she loves to eat, and she loves to go thunder around the meadow every now and then, and I’m so grateful. <br/>The one year mark was weirdly cathartic for me: look! She’s made it a whole year! He absolutely dotes on his hens, giving them tidbits far more often than Bey did. And Presley has the remnants of the instincts to build a nest, and the Easter eggers (and Owl!) *love* it. Honey or Toast will start the grumbling noises that mean “I want to lay an egg but I don’t know where,” and Pres just leaps into action every time. He finds little corners in the barn that somehow happen to have a bit of straw in them (you’re welcome, guys) and does this intricate song and dance where he shows the spot to the hen. He picks up some straw and offers it to her, sits down to show her it’s nice, and then he gets out and sings to her while she tests it. It’s very cute, and they spend ages doing it some days. <br/>ANYWAY, I’ve noticed Owl following Presley and the grumbling Easter egger on these nest tours. I found both eggs in the same nest (a pile of straw in a pile of lumber on a shelf, but they like what they like), and I’m sure the whole first egg thing was less confusing for Owl because she’s seen what to do already. He has two older half brothers and a younger full brother, and once I asked if that wasn’t unusual for the time, that his mom had been married twice. It turns out grandmother married Mr V and had two boys with him and then he disappeared — the scandalous rumor is that he ran off to be gay somewhere else. Then grandmother married my grandfather, Mr F, and had two more boys with him. Mr F was a great dad to all four of his boys at a time when that wasn’t too common!
