I know I shouldn't be so snarky here, but your question is basically "would AI still be hated if AI wasn't AI?" Or "what if we had magic?"

My opinion: honestly, no. People hate LLMs because of the slop they produce on the internet and their use as a tool for surveillance, not even for the outrageous cost it takes to produce it and the financial criminality to keep it going.

Ed Zitron is the biggest voice in "our sane fringe" and yet he really doesn't focus on these immediate consumer-side effects because in the grand scheme they're inconsequential and actually (as in: mechanicistically) *temporary*.

There are some (uninformed) peopke who think the data centers are the only bad thing about the LLM Bubble, but anyone who's actually put the thought in knows that making *less hurdles* to proliferation is a *bad thing.*

You can selfhost for free however you want but software developers have the right to ask for money to use their software. I selfhost about 60tb of media and have paid for Plex monthly for about 10 years now. They are *still* so far above the competition for ease-of-use that I wouldn't even consider switching at this point, even to save $7/month.

SMS Texting in 2025 sucks. The overwhelming majority of "unknowns" texting me are marketing BS (that I didn't sign up for), scams, and other junk. It's almost at the same state that calling was ~10 years ago. Even besides that, texting a friend/family member to have a conversation feels so... wasteful? It's something I used to do and now never would. Anecdote: I also barely respond to texts at this point unless it's a direct question, "I'm at the store, do we need milk?" "Yes." Even still, half the time I'd just call them to say "yes." According to my cellular provider, I've sent 16 SMS messages since March 25th.

If I'm trying to contact someone, I always just call them unless I know they won't pick up and have told others to do the same with me.

Counterpoint to this is that some people think it's rude to cold-call, which is fair, but I have a good enough relationship with the people I keep regular contact with so that they know they can just call back at their own decision. Other than that, I'm only calling businesses/customer support, so it's a moot point.
