Why the Paris Commune Burned the Guillotine— and We Should Too

“148 years ago this week, on April 6, 1871, armed participants in the revolutionary Paris Commune seized the guillotine that was stored near the prison in Paris. They brought it to the foot of the statue of Voltaire, where they smashed it into pieces and burned it in a bonfire, to the applause of an immense crowd.[1] This was a popular action arising from the grassroots, not a spectacle coordinated by politicians. At the time, the Commune controlled Paris, which was still inhabited by people of all classes; the French and Prussian armies surrounded the city and were preparing to invade it in order to impose the conservative Republican government of Adolphe Thiers. In these conditions, burning the guillotine was a brave gesture repudiating the Reign of Terror and the idea that positive social change can be achieved by slaughtering people.

“What?” you say, in shock, “The Communards burned the guillotine? Why on earth would they do that? I thought the guillotine was a symbol of liberation!”

Why indeed? If the guillotine is not a symbol of liberation, then why has it become such a standard motif for the radical left over the past few years? Why is the internet replete with guillotine memes? Why does The Coup sing “We got the guillotine, you better run”? The most popular socialist periodical is named Jacobin, after the original proponents of the guillotine. Surely this can’t all be just an ironic sendup of lingering right-wing anxieties about the French Revolution.

and yet from the very beginning Hitler antisemitism was always as well an antizionism, since in his mind jews were incabable of statehood and therefore would always be an “statedesolving” (“staatszersetzendes“) element that is needed to get rid of. A jewish state in existence would have contradicted that and even though there were plans of expelling jews from Europe, the big industrial and militarism effort was put into the annihilation of the Jews (the holocaust).

But there are antisemtic Zionists in your sense, like the former leader of Hezbollah, Nasrallah, who argued for every Jew to come to Israel, since it would be easier to kill them all there at once together, instead of the complicated hunt to find and kill them all over the world …

Zionism at is origin and core was not nationalism of (“positive”)chauvinistic supremacy but a concept of negativity. The idea was born out of the worldwide discrimination and porgroms against Jews and therefore the strive to find a safer space for themselves. There is no denying that now in Israel there is a supremacist ideology in power that is acting in rascists chauvinism, but that was not the core idea of Zionism (of course even historically there were always supremacists Jews in the zionists movement but they were not the majority). Obviously there is a problem in democratic state (“rule of the majority”) that is formed after the principles of being Jewish and granting every citizen the same rights (Jewish or not), since in its definition the Jews have to be a majority otherwise it wouldn’t be a Jewish state (or the other concept would only allow Jews to vote but that wouldn’t make it a state of equal citizen). Out of this a jewish supremacist political force has grown and results are very visible. In the same time the many holy sites important mostly for the Orthodox Jews (which historically where always anti-zionists because in their own prophecy its blasphemic to create a Jewish state before the messiah has arrived) are in the west (West Bank) and they started in the new Jewish state to use the political and military power of it to create and expand settlements that were not agreed upon in the 1948 resolution. Having written that I think it is a mistake to equate the current nationalistic actions of Israel with the idea of Zionism.

are no good and accurate reasons to call Zionism, nazism… the Zionist idea started by a communist rabbi, separately by Herzl whose whole idea was in the beginning to find a safe heaven for Jewish people because of the oppression they faced. It didn’t get any majority in most of the Jewish communities (1. by people who believes in civil rights, 2. by people who believed in a communist/anarchist revolution and 3. by Orthodox Jews who believe in the prophecy that it is wrong to form a Jewish state before the messia has returned). It gained a majority only after the Shoa. It is important to point the crimes the Israelian state has and is committing, but any comparison to nazism is simply pathetic.
