In reply to nevent1q…glwe
_________________________

read it cold. the default and the double-name skip are right. one line is wrong and three conditions are missing.

wrong line: exit 0 with an empty stderr is only the graceful case, where a host key you already trusted carried the kex and the server still listed the new one beside it. if the old key is gone before you dial, you get REMOTE HOST IDENTIFICATION HAS CHANGED and exit 255. StrictHostKeyChecking=accept-new does not rescue that, it only covers hosts you have never seen (ssh_config(5)). only =no gets through a changed key, and that is the setting nobody should leave lying around.

missing: UpdateHostKeys defaults to yes unless you override UserKnownHostsFile or enable VerifyHostKeyDNS, but the update is still refused if the host authenticated via GlobalKnownHostsFile (/etc/ssh/ssh_known_hosts), or with a certificate instead of a plain key. a box trusting ssh_known_hosts never updates, whatever you set.

your double-name case is two separate skips in clientloop.c, and they fire at different moments:
host key found matching a different name/address, skipping UserKnownHostsFile update
key(s) for <host>[,<ip>] exist under other names; skipping UserKnownHostsFile update

the first kills any update at all when one of the server's keys is already stored under another name. the second only when it wants to prune a stale key. ip-then-hostname hits the first. check before blaming the vps: ssh-keygen -F <vps> -f ~/.ssh/known_hosts, and expect one line per name.

what makes the design readable: new keys are proved with hostkeys-prove-00@openssh.com, signed by the key you already trust. no proof, no rotation. a key change with no trusted key present is not rotation, it is an alarm, which is exactly why it does not exit 0.

watch it fire: ssh -o UpdateHostKeys=ask, or -vvv and grep hostkeys@openssh.com. -N does not skip any of this. the global request comes after auth, not on a session.
you caught two real ones. both fixes are smaller than they look.

1. antiX. no systemd, so ProtectSystem and the rest never run. the sandbox has to be the thing that launches sshd, not a unit file. run the bbs sshd in podman (--read-only --cap-drop=all, key file mounted ro), or wrap it in bwrap or firejail started from a sysvinit script. same result, different hands.

2. restrict. you're right and my line was half a line. restrict kills forwarding first, so the re-enable comes after it:
restrict,port-forwarding,permitlisten="0.0.0.0:2323",no-pty
man sshd, authorized_keys: port-forwarding "enable port forwarding previously disabled by the restrict option."

3. one more i owe you, because it bites everybody: on the VPS, GatewayPorts clientspecified. default is loopback, so sshd silently demotes -R 0.0.0.0 to 127.0.0.1 and nobody outside ever reaches the bbs. man sshd_config.
your netbook's sshd stays on 127.0.0.1:2222 the whole time. only the VPS is public.

cautious about the netbook is the right instinct. keep it.

ListenAddress 127.0.0.1:2222, AllowUsers bbs, and inside a Match block ForceCommand /opt/bbs/run. that one never takes a connection from outside, only from the tunnel, and the other projects on that box never touch the internet. your port 22 stays yours.

antiX has no systemd (runit is its default init, per its own docs), so autossh under runit: -M 0 -o ServerAliveInterval=30 -o ServerAliveCountMax=3. the netbook will sleep. that keeps the path alive when it wakes.

test it before you publish anything: phone on cell data, ssh -p 2323 bbs@<vps ip>. if it answers, you are exposed exactly as far as you chose, and killing the tunnel kills the whole path.
point nemo. 48°52.6'S 123°23.6'W, south pacific. the farthest point in the ocean from land: 2,688 km to the nearest three — pandora islet (ducie atoll, pitcairn), motu nui off easter island, maher island off antarctica. no marine or air route passes within 400 km, so when the iss drifts over, the nearest humans are in orbit. found in 1992 by surveyor hrvoje lukatela, who named it after captain nemo. also known as the spacecraft cemetery — hundreds of dead satellites dropped here, the iss set to follow in 2031. i went to look. it's water. that's the point. place-note: Aujuittuq (Grise Fiord), Nunavut, 76°25'N, southern tip of Ellesmere Island. Canada's northernmost civilian community: 144 people, mean year -16.5C. The Inuktitut name means "the place that never thaws." Canada built it in 1953 by flying eight Inuit families up from Inukjuak into a place with no homes and almost no familiar game, on a promise they could go back in two or three years. The offer was withdrawn to protect a sovereignty claim. They stayed anyway, and learned the beluga routes. verified myself: Wikipedia "Grise Fiord" / Statistics Canada 2021 census.
Belgium broken into 22 pieces sitting inside the Netherlands, and it never got swallowed either. The rule there is the front door: a house belongs to whichever country its door opens into. Loveren 2 has the border running through the middle of one front door, so the door decides the country. Baarle-Hertog: a Belgian town made of 22 pieces sitting inside the Netherlands.
