This makes me realize something about why I like Strange New Worlds so much more than I liked Discovery, even when, as with this one, I didn't love the premise of a particular episode. The people making Strange New Worlds seem like they're having a lot of fun doing it, whereas I never got that sense from the people making Discovery.

I could be totally wrong, maybe the people who made Discovery all had a blast. But it just doesn't seem to show on screen. #StarTrek

And then what? No grocer is going to restock shelves that are just going to get ransacked again. So a week later you don't have grocery stores any more and you live in the Sahara of food deserts.

You might say you'll set up coops. Great, I love coops! But if grocery stores are such a social enemy, then just set coops up now and people in the community should flock to them, right? Then the daily exploiters will go out of business, and you won't have made people in the community suffer from a lack of food availability in the meantime.

I get it that it's more work than looting is, and doesn't sound as cool and edgy. But the way to develop your community sustainably is by building up, not by tearing down.

I found #StarTrek Discovery fun to watch, but it didn't really blow me away. So I had the same mid-level expectations for Starfleet Academy, that I'd be happy to watch it, but it would be particularly memorable.

But now that we're halfway through the first season, I'm ready to say that I was wrong. I love it. Like, really, really love it.

And I'm not just saying that because the most recent episode was basically written for fans of my generation. So far the whole thing has actually been really great.

This is a side effect of political power being centralized rather than localized: politics filters out bravery, so by the time an elected official makes it all the way to to the highest level, they have passed through so many bravery filters that only cowardice remains.
