I was taking the bus home from BART and a woman just a little older than me asked me how long until the 51A came so I looked on the transit app and told her 15 min. She said she was very scared to wait alone for it (to be fair, that part of Broadway has no open businesses at 8 pm so when it’s dark I can see why it might be a little scary) so I abandoned my palms to take the 30 home and waited the extra 12 min with her.

It was a good thing I did because she didn’t know where to wait for the bus, didn’t know to stand up and show the driver you’re taking it as opposed to staying on the bench, and didn’t know you could pay with a clipper card! She thought that was just for BART. Also didn’t know how to request a stop.

And she kept saying how grateful she was I stayed because it’s so scary to wait for the bus alone at night.

I gave up getting home 12 min faster and enjoying my podcast (talking to a stranger was not what I was feeling) but hopefully she learned some life skills?

I have some really wonderful news. My former student and co-author who's been in prison for 12 years, since right after he turned 18, is GETTING OUT.

I'll write a whole blog post about it later, but right now his grandma needs some financial help. It's all explained in the go fund me.

Jorge has spent the last few years really trying to better himself in prison and truly wants to be a productive citizen and take care of his grandma now; we just need to help him get a start in this new life.

He is someone who will pay it forward for his entire life and I can't wait to see how. Thank you for caring about his story for all these years. If you want to know more, I have two books; one with a chapter about him and one that I wrote with him.

Abby is kind of a one-person cat from what we've seen. She adored Grandma but had no interest in the rest of us. I think she would be perfect for someone who lives alone and wants a dedicated companion but doesn't have other pets or a lot of people coming in or out (especially kids).

I saw some really fast dogs at the dog park and was really missing the days when Zora could run and run and run faster than any other dog.

My 20-something trans cousin got up today at our grandmas memorial and talked about being afraid to come out to grandma because “she was already sick and what if she didn’t accept me and then she died when we weren’t ok.”

Grandma was 88 when J came out and had never knowingly met a trans person and very very few gay people.

My cousin spent two days waiting for the answer and when it came it was “I love you so much” with a ton of heart emojis. It took two days because grandma wanted her answer to be perfect and worried it wouldn’t be.

My grandmother died today. It's been a long time coming but it's still sad.

I'm old to still have had a grandmother, but she was my dad's step-mom; his mom died when he was 9 and his dad married a much younger woman. But we never used the word "step-grandmother," she was my grandma from the day I was born.

She was not quite 39 when I was born, and had a 10-year-old and 13-year-old at home and it's only recently that I've fully realized how strange it must have been to become a grandparent at that stage of life.

But from the moment I was born, she was a dedicated grandmother, even while raising kids of her own.

She was diagnosed with multiple myeloma 5-6 years ago and I thought the end was near then but she just kept going, and until recently, had a really good quality of life. I would pick her up and take her to lunch when I could (she'd always pay) at the Cheesecake Factory, which was her favorite.

She was the matriarch of our small extended family and things will be very different now.

I had coffee today with a former student who grew up alternately in foster care and in shelters with his mom who was/is addicted to heroin. He was adopted at age 17 by a woman who was willing to also adopt his 4-year-old brother and thankfully she's turned out to be great.

He told me we're family and that I have been the most stable person in his life. He's 21 now and working as a teacher's aide and at an after school program and is naturally really really good with kids, especially those with anger/impulse control issues because he knows that. He's been in therapy and told me that it's the best thing to ever happen to him and that "all Black men need to be in therapy, seriously, it's so good"

He told me I've started generational healing because I helped him heal and now he's helping kids heal.

I don't have words to describe how I feel <3

OK if I called to make a police report, twice, and both times the dispatcher took my info and asked if I wanted a call back or an officer to show up and obviously said a call back because I don't want the police anywhere near me, I just needed documentation for my landlord.

And if both times they never called back.

And then say, I called back to see why they never called back and they told me that in their records both times the officer said they called back, once advising me what to do and once leaving me a voice mail

And yet my call log says I GOT NO CALLS THOSE DAYS AND NO VOICE MAILS

then who do I need to tall that their officers are falsifying reports, flat-out lying??

I'm so mad. I didn't even want to talk to them and would have been satisfied with "there's nothing we can do" and a police report number but the fact that they lied and are trying to gaslight me; I am VERY ANGRY RIGHT NOW

I have a 9-year-old student who is autistic and comes up with ways to surprise me all the time.

I also have a cage with three baby opossums in it because I am volunteering for a wildlife rescue. And I see students in my home.

Today he came over and looked at them and asked why their mouths were open. I told him they are trying to scare us away by showing us their teeth, but that it’s hard to think they’re scary when they’re so cute.

Today I worked with a third grader on multiplication. I told him that zero was an easy one to remember because it made all other numbers turn to zero. 4 x 0? Zero. A million times zero? Zero. I said, "Zero is a bully that way."

He said, "But in addition, zero never gets anywhere. It doesn't change a number at all. I think that's how it became evil; the wretched origin of zero." (yes, he really said that)

I said, "That sounds like a great story to write.

His eyes LIT UP and he said, "Please can I write that story?" When I agreed, he said "THIS is why I LOVE going to Bronwyn!"

Confirmed to be inflammatory polyarthritis, most likely autoimmune.
She's had two doses of steroids and seems MUCH better. Small chance the steroids could cause a stomach ulcer so hoping not.

No cancer.

We have a specialist appointment a week from tomorrow, on valentine's day.

Things I don't know:

-if she'll have to be on steroids forever

-what to do about the knee injury if she has to stay on steroids (they can't do surgery while she's on steroids)

-if this affects her lifespan

But it's not lymphoma, which the vet said is not curable in dogs. So it's the better option, even though not great.

Zora update: the two main possibilities right know are lymphoma or an autoimmune arthritis thing.

If it’s lymphoma they can often get about a year of good quality of life with chemo but that’s all.

If it’s autoimmune it’s hit or miss, it could be cured or treatable for her whole life or not treatable.

She’ll be here overnight again with fluids for the fever.

I’m so sad and scared.

I don't know if I've told you all about my trans student from a couple years ago. He came out to me as practice before his parents. He was a little nervous - his parents love him but his dad's really high up at Visa or Wells Fargo or something and is a really nice guy but very much a cishet white man of a certain age.

Well, the dad just found me on facebook (I love this family so that's great) and look what his cover photo is.

Zora and I were walking on the beach in Pacifica. And I have a VERY HEALTHY fear of the ocean; my grandmother lived on Stinson Beach -- front yard was the beach -- and that was drilled into me.

I never turn my back on the ocean. I constantly watch for how far up the water comes. I have been to this beach dozens of times and know what it looks like at low tide and high tide.

Zora and I were walking, out of reach of where the water was coming up to, and a wave came out of nowhere and knocked me completely over. I think it was only a couple seconds but it felt like longer. When I could stand up, I saw Zora had been knocked over too but managed to find her feet and run away from the water.

After thinking for a while, my biggest takeaway from the tsunami warning, unfortunately, is that people like to feel superior to others.

I saw so many people on facebook, both people I know and don't know, making fun of people who panicked, and obviously feeling superior and it is extremely disappointing.

When an official warning goes out that includes all caps and the phrase "You are in danger" it is extremely unfair to blame anyone for panicking or overreacting.

It's not a lack of critical thinking or a failure of basic science (I have a science degree and it did not include the behavior of tsumanis if they get to the Bay); it was a panic-inducing official communication accompanied by an alarm sound. In addition, it said to go inland and we're in a unique situation where it seems that we're unlikely to be overly affected but we are also on an island, so following instructions to go inland sure sounds like it applies to us.

I always tell my students (who I see at my house) that they can bring snacks if they need, but sometimes they're hungry and I forget So I make sure I know allergies and if the parents are ok with me giving their child food.

One mom of a young student asked me, "What are the crackers you gave her? She loved them so much and I've been buying different crackers but none of them are good enough. she only wants yours."

The crackers in question? Off-brand slightly stale Saltines that I got at Grocery Outlet.
