#Spotted on Market Day in Aotearoa New Zealand

Two young humans (10?) are industriously draping a fence with neon green fake cobwebs.
Having MANY detailed discussions about the type of spider that would be living in their garden and how it could hypothetically eat any trick or treaters dropping by that evening.

A VERY BIG dog (Mastiff cross bull elephant?) feels that his nose DEFINITELY must be buried against his very serious human's plums.
Very Serious Human trying to have a very serious conversation about politics, pretending the deep breathing situation around his nethers is DEFINITELY not happening.

Three small humans (4 to 6?) are strutting along while brandishing pink balloons.
Looking disdainfully around at the other market goers, game faces on.
Pink balloon people are obviously the coolest people in the world.

Two men (40s?) are standing outside a voting station while debating life, the universe and their differing political views.
Joking and giving each other hell for being on the wrong side of the political fence.
Finally giving each other a manly hug and a back pat before going in to vote.

A small human (3?) is hugging Mum VERY tightly. Saying in the most earnest voice: "Mum, I LOVE YOU!"
Mum gives his ribs a tickle. "Love you too ya little terror." Giggles and laughter in the air.

Friends on a grand adventure.

A woman (40s?) wearing a sparkly pink cowboy hat is rolling her wheelchair past a small library.
Whitney Houston playing from a speaker in her lap.
Laughing and crooning: "I will always love youuu," with the friend walking at her side.

A small human (4?) has been given the EXTREMELY IMPORTANT job of carrying a bunch of peonies for Nan but he's not sure how to go about this flower business. Upright, in front of him like a sword?
Upside down like a broom?
Swishing through the air like a wand?
SO many choices!

In a fruit and vege shop: A man (50s?) is patting his pockets and frowning. "I had my list here somewhere. Swear I did."
His teen son (14?) rolls his eyes and says: "What would you do without me to help you look human?"
Dad says: "Forgettin' stuff IS human!"

A tiny human (1?) is feeding a small jersey cow with the wonkiest of horns a posy of grass and wildflowers through a fence.
Wonky Cow seems quite happy to accept all delicious treats and gives Tiny Human a low "HMMMMOOO" of thanks.
Tiny Human shrieking and happy dancing in reply.

A burly parking attendant (30s?) is holding a small dog in the crook of his arm (terrier cross parking inspector?) while directing cars towards a grassy field.
Small Dog is giving a gruff "woof" of approval to the cars that pass muster.

Two young humans (7 & 8?) are having a fierce debate about the width, breadth and length of their dad's mullets. Youngest Human is arguing that his dad's is SO long at the back.
Oldest Human is countering that his dads is SO wide at the top!
Who. Will Win?!

A small human (3?) with Spiderman face paint is earnestly asking Mum: "Can we find some shade?"
"I think so." Mum says. "If you look hard enough."
Small Human Spiderman now has a mission!
Racing off, arms pumping at his sides.
He has shade to find and he will not rest until he is victorious!

A small human (4?) is asking Mum: "Can I have some cake?"
Mum shakes her head: "I don't think so buddy. You've already had a Mr Whippy."
Small Human is MOST incensed at this great injustice. "But I ate an APPLE AFTER!"
A serious discussion about Apple and Cake Math ensues.

A small human (4?) is offering her dolly a pancake.
Dolly's hair's been chopped in a very interesting style.
She has some remarkable drawings on her face.
She appears game for anything.
But for some reason she isn't hungry!
Small Human says optimistically: "YUMMM. Want me to eat it for you?"

Pointing with UTMOST accusation, she roars: "LOOK AT THOSE SILLY FLOWERS!"
She does not truck with floral frippery.

A small human (3?) is crouched over a patch of grass, searching most intently. Holding a velvet marble pouch in one hand while saying with absolute gravity: "I've lost it Mum."
Mum reassuring him that they'll find it.
(Seen a while later, victoriously holding up a blue cats eye.)

A man (30s?) with a luxurious mullet is standing next to a very proper woman (70s?) who's wearing a floral dress, pearls and a straw hat.
With a grin, Mullet Man says: "Get some of that cake into ya Gran! It's next level eh! Change your life!"
Gran agrees that the cake is indeed delicious this year.

Two ponies are standing head to tail, giving each other a good rump scratch while a row of Small Humans (2 to 6?) watch on in absolute fascination.
Finally, a small human says with scandalized outrage: "That horse is kissing the other horse's BOTTOM!"
A nearby woman (40s?) laughs and says: "They do that sometimes."
"BUT IT'S A BOTTOM!"

Plates piled high with bake sale treats.
A jar of garden-picked flowers on their gingham-draped table.
Big rolling hills and mountains in the distance.

A small human (3?) is gesturing with a dictatorial pointing stick as he directs a large number of other small humans as they dig in a sand pit.
Dictatorial Small Human cares not for this digging business.
He cares for project management and is MOST INSISTENT that they all follow his orders!

A small human (4?) wearing fluffy cat ears, is horsey galloping to the food trucks
then to look at some grazing ponies,
then to look at some vintage cars,
THEN to a sandpit.
Small Human Cat Pony has much galloping to do and she's going to do it EVERYWHERE.
Neighing and meowing as she goes!

A man (40s?) is inspecting a fundraising stall selling multiple types of tomato plants.
With a thoughtful expression, he says: "I reckon we should get these ones, love."
His partner asks: "Yeah? Why'd ya like those ones?"
"Cos they're lookin' at me funny."
She laughs.

A man (80s?) with a prodigious bushy moustache takes a bite from a cream donut and SQUISH.
Cream covering his moustache and squootling up his nostrils.
His wife howling with laughter.

A tiny human (2?) is crouched next to a culvert, peering inside and pointing.
Asking Mum: "What's IN there?"
Mum says: "Probably some bugs."
Tiny Human Culvert Scientist looks offended at the lack of rigorous evidence to back up this statement. "NO MUM! There's not enough ROOM!"

A tiny human (1.5?) has got Dad's car keys in his hands and is off!
Toddle-galloping through the markets.
Dodging and weaving!
Chortling and giggling!
Will he get away?!
(Dad in hot pursuit!)

A young human (8?) is RACING through the markets.
Holding a paper bag out in front of him.
Expression urgent as he passes his Mum's stall while bellowing: "IT'S AN EMERGENCY! DAD NEEDS HIS COOKIE!"

A woman (60s?) is addressing a herd of ice-cream covered small humans (3-6?)
Hands on hips, she says: "Okay my little fraggles, how about we take you all to the park and wear you out?"
Little Fraggles think this is a marvellous idea.

Giggling when he playfully growls that he's trying to focus.
"POW!"

A woman (70s?) in a fluffy pink dressing gown is walking onto the porch of her pretty white cottage and calls out to the flitting birds in her garden: "Good morning small chaps! Are we going to have a good day today?"

A small human (3?) wearing a Spiderman costume bellows: "WHOA! THAT DUCK IS HUGE!" as he points at a big duck swimming on a lake.
Junior Spiderman Avian Scientist looks around to see if anyone is noticing the majestic massive bird in their midst.

A young human (9?), wearing a school uniform is sitting on a park bench while playing an ocarina.
His friend is humming the song that she thinks he SHOULD be playing.
But NO!
Three Blind Mice is what he's playing and that's final.

A man (20s?) with a chill air is idly finger picking at a guitar while sitting in a frozen yoghurt shop.
Crooning random snippets of a song as the people come and go.
Happy in his own world.

In an antique shop full of a world of fabulous ephemera, a woman (70s?) wearing a silver turban, with a hearty, husky voice is saying to the owner: "I'm having a town day today Darl. Sometimes a girl's gotta have a wee day out and this is mine!"

A small human (3?) is sitting across from Dad in front of a bakery as they have morning tea.
Dad's gone for a potato pie while Small Human has opted for a strawberry lamington.** Coconut flakes and pink icing all down her face but neither seem to mind.

A tiny human (2?) is MOST INSISTENT that he's going to put on his own sunscreen.
Mum's holding the bottle while he's PUSHING down the pump but nothing's coming out!
Maybe letting out a HUGE ROAR the next time he presses the pump will work...
SUCCESS!

She freezes, says: "Whoops!" and then belly laughs.

A big black cat is sitting sentinel on top of a high wall in a busy city street.
Looking down at all the humans coming and going with an imperious air.
A fluffy king monitoring his minions.

A woman (30s?) stops in front of a toy shop window with a display of muppet-like puppets.
Eyes wide, wearing a huge grin, she breathes: "Puppets! I LOVE puppets!"

A big and burly construction worker (40s?) with a bushy beard is navigating his way around a maze of roadworks with a neatly dressed woman (70s?) close behind him. Grinning to a digger driver he roars: "Mum's commin' through! Clear the way!"
Mum gives Digger Driver a polite, shy wave.

A tiny human (1.5?) has decided that she is VERY FLOPPY just as she's passing an ice cream shop.
Suddenly her legs feel VERY HEAVY.
And now her arms! (Oh no!)
And now she has to sit down. (The pathos!)

Chatting animatedly to a bubbly friend wearing a death metal T-shirt, an orange skirt and pink Crocs.

A woman (80s?) is sitting on some steps in front of a veterinarian's.
Hugging and softly singing to an elderly brindle staffy.
This is love.

Two young humans (7 & 8?) are strutting down a shady street with two GIANT plastic swords slung over their shoulders.
Checking here and there for bad guys to defend the universe from.
Settling on smiting a light pole instead.
(Light pole looks suitably repentant.)

A woman (50s?) cycles up to a farm gate on a country walking track only for a big burly man jogging from the other direction (40s?) to open it for her.
Offering a charming bow when she thanks him.
She cycles off grinning.

A VERY enthusiastic small terrier (Jack Russell cross Energiser Bunny?) RACES AWAY from his human and into a field.
Then BACK TO HIS HUMAN.
Then away.
THEN BACK.
Then away.
He can go forever!

A tiny human (2?) wearing a bright orange bike helmet, a dinosaur T-shirt and riding a tricycle is zooming SO FAST through a park.
Roaring with epic aplomb at the ducks who do not seem to be bothered by these raucous shenanigans.

Two women (20s & 80s?) are sharing a pot of tea while engaged in a bubbly conversation.
Stopping to hold hands for a brief solemn moment before bursting into giggles and ordering more cake.

A woman (70s?) wearing zebra print, leopard print and a tiara is holding court as she drinks coffee with friends. Declaring: "It's SO weird to be surrounded by old people only to realize that I'M old too!"
Her friend hoots and says: "Speak for yourself! I'm a spring chicken!"

A woman (20s?) is walking through a pretty park while holding a Pyrex dish of lasagne.
Choosing a picnic table right next to a small lake.

Tucking into lunch while a gang of snack seeking ducks begins to assemble.

A tiny human (2) is MOST impressed with a policeman who is minding a stall.
Walking up behind Mister Policeman with a look of utmost awe that turns into happy-teary overwhelm when he gets to try on Mister Policeman's hat.

Two men (30s?) are sitting side-by-side,
eating from big plates piled high with food.
Chatting about life, the weather, family and solving the world's problems in between amiably policing a puppy-playful battalion of small humans romping around a nearby playground.
This is the life.

A teen (14?) stops in the middle of a big crowd and roars: "AGGGHHHHHHHH!"
A friend says: "What was that about?"
"Just a noise I make when I'm with family eh."

A small human (3?) is walking along with BIG STOMPY steps. A man (20s?) asks: "What's this all about little cuz?"
Little Cuz says: "I'm HAPPY!"
Big Cuz says: "Fair enough. That's a good reason eh."

A tiny human(2?) finishes the last of his milkshake and Mum asks: "All done? No more?"
Tiny Human looks down at his milk shake cup with dawning realization: "No more?"
"No more."
He looks up at Mum, expression bereft. "No more." and then dives against Mum's leg for a comfort hug.

Any typos spotted in this post are a little tired and were almost not going to go to the Pasefika Festival but they're so glad they did. If typos spotted, they'll be rubbing their tummies after eating all the delicious food and enjoying watching some wonderful dancing.

Two teens (14?) are in deep conversation while walking home from school.
One says: "I'm a very candid person. I can tell anyone anything."
"Anything?"
"Almost anything. Well, not really. But I WANT to be a candid person."

A tiny human (2?) wearing a unicorn helmet is sitting on the back of Dad's bike.
Tiny Human Unicorn is waving with suitable aplomb at everyone he passes.
Both hands (hooves?) in action.
Unicorns must let their public know they're adored!

A very fluffy black dog (poodle cross hair-salon-whoopsie) is sitting on the back of his human's tricycle. Hair being buffeted here and there in the wind.
Giving any other dog they pass a WOOF of greeting before rolling off into the distance.

A small human (3?) is a picture of utmost woe due to a cookie deficit because she has eaten her cookie.
With maximum gravity she says to Mum: "I have to go outside and hug Jess so I feel better."
She then walks just outside and hugs a patient elderly staffy while Mum finishes her coffee.

A small human (5?) is dictating ALL the rules for a game to her little brother (3?) in a park.
Her grave tone most implying that DIRE consequences will happen if the game is not played properly.
Meanwhile Little Brother is looking speculatively at the puddle near his sister's feet.

A stern woman wearing a floral dress, pearls (80s?) is ordering a pot of tea in a cafe.
But what is this?!
A laugh?
Ah.
She's spotted the sprinkle cookies at the counter.*
There's always room for a bit of fun.

A barefoot man (50s?) wearing a singlet and work shorts is humming a cheerful tune to himself as he fills up a bird feeder.
A big flowering magnolia overhead.
Birdsong in the air.

A tiny human (2?) and Dad are inspecting some diggers with a VERY SERIOUS air.
Tiny Human is pointing and asking Dad MANY important engineering questions.
Dad answering every one with detail and thoughtfulness.
Tiny Human nodding emphatically.

Two women (20s?) in gym clothes are walking along a quiet street, passing a bunch of grapes between them. Snacking and chatting.
A skip in their step.
Sunshine warming their faces.

A VERY ENTHUSIASTIC terrier (Jack Russel cross flubber?)
is bouncing on the spot next to his human's cafe table.
Eyes on a big bowl of hot chips sitting on the table.
There are snacks to be had!
If only he can bounce high enough!

Any typos spotted in this post decided that they had to try a sprinkle cookie when they ducked out to their favourite cafe this morning. If typos spotted, they'll be laughing at an extraordinarily bouncy and optimistic dog doing his very best to get himself a chip.

*These were like amaretti with hundreds and thousands on them. (Think hageslag if you're Dutch.)

A tiny human (1?) in a stripy red and white onesie is huffing, chuffing and puffing like a little steam train as she crawls in a straight line across a cafe floor towards a toy basket.
On a MIGHTY MISSION.
Mum cruising along behind, keeping pace.

A small human (4?) in a Hulk jumper is hugging Mum with a monkey grip.
Head on Mum's shoulder.
Eyes half closed.
Small Hulk might be very strong but he likes hugs too. Mum nuzzling the top of his head and smiling.

Four teens are sitting around a cafe table, laughing, joking and happily talking over each other.
Demolishing a big bowl of wedges sitting on the table between them.
Friendship and potatoes.
The perfect combination.

A small human (3?) is RUNNING REALLY FAST up to Nana while holding a bedraggled bouquet of hand-picked flowers and leaves and rather interesting sticks.
Holding them out with utmost aplomb.
Nana accepting them with a wide, proud smile.

A woman (40s?) waiting in line at a checkout is saying to a friend: "I woke up this morning and just listened to my husband sleeping for a while and I felt so happy. It's silly and it's just breathing, but I love him and it's nice, you know

Any typos spotted in this post are enjoying a cosy afternoon working while it's rainy and misty outside. If typos spotted, they'll be making a big pot of potato and leek soup and will be putting on their extra fluffy socks. It's that kind of vibe.

Both armed with Matchbox cars.

Running after them laughing.
Whose car will win?!

Two teens (13?) are rocking out with some epic air guitar at a bus stop next to traffic lights.
One's going for the on-the-knees solo.
The other's going for all the air chords at once.
A woman (60s?) waiting near them pulling the horns.
Passing drivers laughing and waving out their windows.

At a small country settlement.
Two young humans (8?) have waded out to the middle of an estuary at low tide.
Up to their ankles in gloopy mud.
Mum roaring from the back porch that they should have taken their school uniforms off first!

Oh well.

An elderly black dog with distinguished silver whiskers (Staffy cross miniature walrus?) is sitting on the deck of an old apple shed. Eyes closed as she basks in the sun. A lady at her leisure.

A tiny human (2?) is TREMENDOUSLY FRUSTRATED that his slinky isn't slinking.
Standing in the middle of the biscuit aisle of a supermarket, holding Slinky up and watery wailing: "IT'S BROKEN!"
Big brother coming to the rescue.

In a boho country town, a barefoot woman, wearing a floaty blue and white dress, is carrying a small brown puppy down the street.
Calling out to friend: "First visit to the vet! She was a champ!"
Champ Puppy accepts all congratulations pats as her due.

Two teens (15?) are sitting cross legged in front of a picket fence.
Talking as they wield paint brushes paint the fence dark grey.
A fluffy white cat sitting nearby, supervising with half-closed kitty eyes.

A young human (8?) is playing a game of tennis with Dad on a country tennis court.
The net might be a bit frayed.
The court may have the odd weed growing around the edges but they don't mind.
Eyes on the ball at all times.
It's Young Human's turn to serve!

A duo of brown and white spotted baby goats have found THE BEST furry rock to play on.
It might be very big.
It might have horns.
It might moo.
But it's an awful lot of fun.
(Giant Bull is chewing his cud while being maximumly unbothered by the goat party taking place on his back.)

A tiny human (2?) is holding Mum's hand as they walk to the end of a VERY LONG driveway and check their letterbox. Waving at cars as they go by.
Doing a happy dance when Mum discovers that they have mail.

A woman (30s?) is sternly ordering a mob of small humans (3-6?) out from under a bush.
Small humans charge out, laughing gleefully, heading for the nearest playground. Mum picking up the smallest, throwing her over her shoulder.
Giggles and snorts against her back.

A young human (10?) is very seriously signing a zine titled "The Wonderful Planet Snakes". A tiny little scrawl on the inside cover. Handing it over with a shy smile as a woman (40s?) approaching her table says: "I want one too!"

A woman (30s?) is sipping a vanilla diet coke while standing by her stall.
Laughing and saying: "This stuff is hummingbird nectar to me!"

A teen (13?) who is towering over his mum is saying: "Mum, when we're finished here can we go get the cake? We gotta get the cake!"

Any typos spotted in this post spent a lovely time at Nelson Zinefest this afternoon. If typos spotted they'll be reading a very informative zine about what life was like in the 1980s. (Apparently dinosaurs existed!)

Also, I definitely don't post pictures of young humans but these two have assured me that they and their parents are totally cool with it and are happy to promote their majestic brand "Loo Rolls Comix". 😊)

Their heads poking out the side of an electrician's van that's driving down a busy street.
People laughing as they go.

A woman (80d?) wearing all leopard print, towering heels and gold cats-eye glasses struts up to the counter of a fancy restaurant with a man (80s?) in a suit.
He says: "Let me pay for this Merl."
She snorts. "Put your money away. This one's on me Darl. You're worth it."

A man (20s?) is riding his bike down a quiet street next to a river. A fishing rod over one shoulder. A chilly bin on the back. Whistling a tune that echoes behind him as he goes.

A very friendly dog (retriever cross theatre usher?) is greeting people as they enter a gallery.
Giving every newcomer with an amiable sniff, then leading the way inside before sitting next his favourite painting of a big tree.

A woman (20s?) is in a cafe.
Writing with ferocious intensity into a diary.
Smiling at her own thoughts.
Accepting the coffee that comes to her table with a big grin.

Any typos spotted in this post are a puddle of absolute exhaustion and elation after finishing the final workshop of their 40 day in person & online Beautiful Words festival today. If typos spotted, they'll be sitting on their porch in the sun, enjoying a nice cup of tea.

One calls to the other: "Beers after this?"
The other replies: "No beers t'night mate."
"But what was the point in goin' for a ride if we can't have a beer?!"

A woman (30s?) in a pale blue felted witch hat, wearing a fluffy blue jumper and small circular spectacles is sitting on a bench.
Gazing out at people coming and going on a sunny morning.
A faint, enigmatic smile on her face.

Two rambunctious puppies with very large feet (Mastiff cross cuddle puddle?) are rolling and rampaging through the front garden of a little wooden cottage.

Cups, saucers and a teapot set out neatly on a big floral scarf.

Curious ducks waddling over to investigate.

A tiny human (2?) is EXTREMELY INDIGNANT that a very elderly dog (pug cross snuffle beast?) is not showing more sympathy over the fact that her shoe has come off. Meanwhile Elderly Dog seems quite unbothered by his bad manners and is inspecting a nearby shrub for widdling potential.

A cafe server (20s?) is engaged in serious engineering chat with a customer (40s?).
Saying she's worried she's failed a recent probability exam.
Being comforted with the news that her customer nearly failed his too and that it didn't affect his career in the slightest.
Cheerful smiles all around.

A little scruffy and scrappy dog (privy carpet cross terrier?) is patiently waiting for his human to order a coffee.
Wagging his tail optimistically at a nearby table eating their breakfast.

Big Horse appears content with this arrangement.

A jersey cow is kneeling by a fence, head poking through... reaching... reaching... for a promising looking patch of grass that looks exactly like all the other grass surrounding her.
But this stuff's DEFINITELY going to be tastier.
Tongue poking out.
If. Only. She. Could. Just. REACH!

In the driveway of little cottage surrounded by flowering shrubs: A duo of young humans (6 & 9?) have set up a "Cookie and Nails" stand covered in a floral 70s style tablecloth.
Greeting their friend (5?) who's bounced up on a bunny-eared hopper ball.
Grinning and shading their eyes from the sun.

A small human (4?) is doing a special wiggly bendy, windy, wormy, groovy dance to greet the bus as it pulls up at the bus stop.

A very small indignant dog (Chihuahua cross incident report?) is MOST offended that her human has had the TEMERITY to eat the last of a biscuit without sharing it with her. Shaking in moral outrage with a tail slightly wagging just in case a course correct is required and more biscuit is available.

A teen (13?) and Nan are sharing a pottle of hot chips while waiting for the bus. Heads resting together. Solving the world's problems one bite at a time.

A couple (80s?) are holding hands across a cafe table, smiling at each other as steam drifts from their cups of coffee. Every now and then bursting into great peals of laughter at something the other has said.

A big fluffy tabby cat has noticed that her human is home. Racing through the garden, meowing like an air raid siren only to stop right next to Human's legs. Stropping back and forward only to be scooped up for a welcome home snuggle.

A small human (4?) is walking behind Dad in a supermarket, saying: "Dad if you caught a really big fish, could it eat you? Not a small fish but a REALLY BIG fish?"
Dad shrugs: "Dunno Buddy. Maybe."

He's sleepy, and every now and then looks hopefully at the counter for his coffee,
but there's contentment here.

Two bubbly women (50s?) are catching up.
One's hot chocolate arrives and while she's distracted by something out the window, her friend deftly snaffles her marshmallows.
Popping them into her mouth.
Only the faint cheeky twitch to her mouth giving the game away.

A man (60s?) who looks like a piratical Ernest Hemingway, with a fish hook earring and an immaculate short grey beard is sipping a cappuccino while reading a timeworn paperback Hemingway.
He's not the old man and the sea, but he is the (not so) old man with a coffee.

A brown sausage dog is jauntily trotting along, nose pointed forward.
But what is this?!
ANOTHER BROWN SAUSAGE DOG?! (Gasp!)
He'll see about that.
A stern bark is required before they decide they're friends. Noodly bodies side-by-side as they give each other a polite introductory sniff.

SO many smells and all of them SO interesting!
Must collect them all (with a waggy tail!)

A big family (teens to 80s?) are sitting on the porch of a country cottage.
Basking in the sun.

A dad (20s?) waiting for his lunch at a Filipino food truck is hugging a tiny new human (days?) to his chest, singing a soft song, smooching a small fuzzy black head of hair. The world is happening around him, but he's in the zone.

A man (40s?) is sitting at a window-front counter in a Thai restaurant. There's a big bowl of tom yum in front of him and he's tucking in with a happy smile. Waving at friends who spot him inside, inviting them in.

Any typos spotted in this post are beginning to think the tunnel web spider living on their window sill may be channelling Shelob. She's lived there for a few months now rather peacefully, but she's getting VERY BIG and just nabbed a bumble bee in her web while they were writing this post. (AGHHH)

Any typos spotted in this post were charmed to overhear that one of the lovely baristas at a favourite cafe has met someone who makes him happy. If typos spotted, they'll be trying not to laugh at the disgruntled noises being made by a poodle who isn't getting his demanded allotment of scone.

*Smoko is a morning or afternoon tea break.

He says: "She came in here for coffee and asked me out! Turns out she's a friend of a friend. It's been five days and it's pretty sweet, eh."

A rather serious looking white dog (poodle cross accountant?) is sitting on his human's lap. Snuffling and grrrmphing as his human repeatedly neglects to give him some of her scone. Serious Dog has done the calculations and he's at least due half!

Two road workers (20s & 40s?) in full high vis are relaxing on a patch of grass during smoko*. Both soaking up some winter sun. Tummies shaking as they make each other laugh.

Two teens (14?) are walking along a street lined with flowering magnolia trees.
Sharing a sandwich.
Solving the world's problems.
Big blue sky.
A tūī serenading them from a tree branch overhead.

A woman (70s?) is saying to a friend: "Did I tell you that I took Mum to the movies last night? She loves a horror flick and it was an absolute nightmare. I didn't sleep at all! She's ninety four! You'd think she'd be over all that by now."
Her friend laughs and says: "Never too old!"

A chilly wind blowing but he's in his happy place.

A small human (5?) is skipping his absolute hardest to keep up with his running big brothers (7 & 9?)
Puffing and huffing.
Face pink.
They're calling back for him to run like them,
but NO!
He shall skip and he shall skip and that's that.

A big shaggy dog (Old English Sheep Dog cross bean bag?) is sitting on the back of his human's trike.
AWOOOING the song of his people as they roll along a beach side road.
People laughing as they pass.

At the opening of a gallery space, hundreds of people are standing quietly, the people at the back straining to listen to the speaker up the front.
Down the back, a small human (3?) is saying very earnestly in a whisper-roar: "I'M BEING VERY GOOD AND KEEPING QUIET AREN'T I DAD?!"

Any typos spotted in this post were absolutely delighted to see snow on the mountains when they went for a short beach walk this morning. If typos spotted, they'll be stopping to laugh at a passing dog who is intent on serenading his city.

Introducing Moopsy*, the little stray can that I have mentioned quite a bit over the past few months.

We're bunkered down getting our next Tiny Moments of Joy book to the printers today in between co-ordinating a writing festival, so I haven't left the house and am verging on turning into a giant profanity beast, BUT we have #spotted something out our kitchen window.

That thing is a very fluffy thing. A very moody fluffy thing that will only eat his breakfast if patted, but will otherwise try and eat anyone who dares walk up our garden path.

Except for my lovely partner Tony.

For some reason Moopsy loves Tony with the might of an exploding sun and regularly tries to give him all the love in his small, malevolent fluffy form.

In turn, Tony seems to view Moopsy as the smooshiest of fur beasts, insisting that he's really a softy and not out to steal our immortal souls.

First thing, every morning, Tony sits on our top garden step while drinking his coffee with Moopsy sitting on his lap, purring and acting like he's not a furry little psychopath.

The rest of the day, Moopsy lives in a cat nest in the winter-bare ivy on our garden fence like a fluffy, moody potato, ready to launch himself at any other cat (or human) who dares venture into his territory.

I think we may now have a cat.

*Moopsy is based on an adorable creature that drinks bones from Star Trek Lower Decks.

Tiny Human chortles and guffaws in reply.

A woman (30s?) is walking around a fruit and vegetable shop, playfully booping her partner on the backside with a large telegraph cucumber as he selects a cauliflower. Grinning angelically when he tells her to behave.

A tubby snorting snuffling brown puppy scampers into a dog friendly dive bar.
The owner crouches down to give Tubby Puppy a pat and to offer her a doggy treat from a jar that's kept especially for the very best boys and girls.

A big and sturdy man (30s?) is sitting outside a cafe with twin sleeping tiny humans (months?) tucked into the crook of each arm.
Exchanging weightlifting tips with a friend sitting at the next table.
His partner inside, ordering cake.

The driver shakes his head: "Nope sweetheart. I'll be back in an hour. Take care eh."

A small human (3?) is stomping through the markets, hands swinging at his sides.
Bellowing a tremendous song for all to hear: "I'M GONNA WEEEEEE ALL BY MYSEEEELF."
Dad walking behind him, saying to a passerby: "The stuff they come out with eh?!"

A tiny human (2?) has something very precious clutched to his chest.
Mum's friend asks what it is and he unclenches his fingers to reveal a small toy train.

Ambling along in the sun.
Eating a pie with all signs of enjoyment, tomato sauce on his fingers.

A waitress is smiling quietly to herself as she spoons the batter for muffins into a tray.
The place is packed, people are talking excitedly but she appears lost in concentration.
Muffins are where it's at.

A small human (2?) is waddling through a cafe.
He's been given a chocolate chip cookie and is offering everyone a bite.
Numerous strangers are saying: "Thank you!" and feigning taking a bite with generous "Num num num" noises.
Small human is a benevolent prince in his cookie kingdom.

Any typos spotted in this post are rather sad today to learn that their favourite cafe is closing in a month. If typos are spotted in this post, they'll be popping down to give the owner a hug. She's had a rough year.

There are little hands holding the BIG BOOK!
And is that a pair of little legs sticking out the bottom?
And is that a DINOSAUR on the back cover?
Ahhh, that explains everything.

A woman (30s?) wearing a bright green and pink dinosaur beanie is standing in line for cinema tickets.
Meanwhile, a tiny human (1?) is standing behind her, completely enraptured.
Eyes wide. Tugging on Dad's hand to share the majesty.
Is it possible... that DINOSAURS live at the movies?!

Sipping tea as he turns this way and that to survey the floral mayhem surrounding him.

A small human (5?) is not quite sure about all this book chat.
He's being very good.
And very quiet.
Hugging Dad's leg with both arms.
Studying the room with a sleepy expression.
Dad's hand gently resting on his tousled hair.

An author (30s?) is asked a question about the favourite line she wrote in her latest book and she is a little bit flummoxed.
But never fear!
A member of the audience has a review at the ready with quotes in it and happily reads out her favourite.
The room erupts into appreciative smiles.

An entire book club (20s-30s?) files into the front row in an independent small city book shop.
Books piled on tables and shelves everywhere.
They're here on a mission.
The author is a friend and they WILL fiercely support her.

Numerous people of all makes and models are filing into a bookshop for a book talk, stopping by the counter to ask the owner after her much beloved dog who's chilling at home.
Bookshop dogs are best dogs and this one's well missed tonight.

She can't be interrupted!
This is SCIENCE!

A small human (3?) is trotting down the street on the heels of Big Brother and Big Sister.
They're both dressed for school, engaged in a vigorous Sibling Shoving War.
Meanwhile Small Human is carrying a rugby ball with both hands.
Prepared for all sporting eventualities.

A woman (50s?) is huffing and puffing and teenage eye-rolling theatrically as her mum (80s?) straightens her scarf.

Friends on an adventure.

After much inspection and sniffing, Tiny Dog and Human decide that a canework rocking chair is the right one for them.

A woman (20s?) is hunting through racks of men's jackets with a pensive expression.
This one?
Hmm nope.
This one? Yeah.. nah.
What about... THIS one?
She pulls out an old tweed coat with patches on the elbows.
Needs a bit of mending around the collar but... yep this is the one for her!

A teen (16?) and Dad are browsing teacups.
Suddenly Teen reels back, face screwed up in abject horror: "WOOF! Dad you are SO full of toxic masculinity right now."

Apparently it means that there's a BIG HOUSE and people live in the HOUSE and they have THEIR BREAKFAST which includes LOTS OF CHOCOLATE and POTATOES. Mum is "yes anding" all the way.

A tiny human (2?) has decided he does not truck with clothes.
Mum's trying to get his little sister out of the car, telling him to stay nearby.
Meanwhile he's following the rules, while doing a wibbly wobbly dance, roaring a song and shucking his clothes with great aplomb.

A small human (4?) is walking along next to Dad, sharing all the world's worries.
Dad's hand is on Small Human's shoulder as he commiserates, saying "Yeah, some things in life are pretty tough mate."

Two women (50s?) are sitting across from each other in a library, enjoying a game of backgammon. As they roll their dice, they chat about the weather, their families and friends. A relaxed moment of friendship and calm as the day goes by.

A woman (40s?) is scouring the cookbook section of a library with at least ten books on pie making in her arms. When a librarian asks if she needs help, she says: "It's my son's twenty-first next week and he's asked for a pie instead of a cake. I haven't baked for centuries! But we'll get there!"

Two men (60s?) in muddy hiking gear are sitting across from each other in a chill burger joint. Next to them a group of 20 somethings are raucously laughing but Muddy Men are silent. Eating their burgers with vigorous gusto before ordering two more. It's obviously been a big day.

A tiny human (months?) wearing a teddy bear-themed onesie, is sitting on her dad's lap as they enjoy a quiet moment in a park. Tiny human has just discovered her feet and she's doing some impressive yoga moves, every now and then giving her dad a beatific gummy smile. Feet are FUN.

Dad, ever patient, says: "Yeah bud?"

Mum calls up: "You gonna come down so we can say hi to Damo?"

A young human (8?) is optimistically dropping crumbs on the ground to attract a new seagull friend.
Seagull inspects the crumbs from a distance, then struts off to inspect someone eating a cheese toastie.
But what is this?
The toastie is not on offer?
Hmm, maybe Seagull is friendly after all.

A man (50s?) asks the owner of a bric-a-brac stall what the price of something is.
She says with charming earnestness: "We only price from the heart. Whatever you feel the need to pay is what it's worth. That way no one misses out on something they love."

A very determined man (50s?) in farm gear and sturdy muddy boots is striding through the markets with a massive lettuce tucked under his arm. Other people are ambling from stall to stall around him, chatting and laughing, but he's has serious lettuce business to take care of and that's that.

A man (20s?) says to a woman (20s?): "Let me carry your shopping basket for ya eh?""
She shakes her head. "It's not that heavy."
"Yeah, but let me be your Prince Charming." He gives her a grin.

Small Human is aiding the process by doing a vigorous noodly dance and singing a song about smelly frogs.
Dad totally chill.

A sausage dog with a very low tum is complimented by a stranger in the street.
Sausage Dog's human (80s?) chuckles and says: "Her name is Bossy Bessie after my mother in law!"
Bossy Bessie accepting all adoring pats as her due.

In a park: A small human (5?) is telling mum that "IT'S COOOOLD!"

Two small humans (5 & 6?) have decided that the best way to build a sandcastle is on the tideline.

Every shovelful of sand they pile up...
Washes away IMMEDIATELY!
Oh no!
Recriminations!
It's definitely the architect's fault, not the engineers!
