i feel like many of the "rvturn to a simpler web" people miss some of the reasons html is so complicated and don't think about support for non-european languages.

e.g. markdown is unable to encode rubies/furigana; specify blocks of horizontal text within a vertical line (for top to bottom languages); or specify language of a span for screen readers or unified codepoints.

i don't know of any other markup languages that even try to specify language specific counting styles (e.g. 甲, 乙, 丙) or bidi isolation.

i am not the only one, most ebooks now are some subset of html (both epub and kfx are)

that book was 2.7 million words though, so it's not surprising. the boox reader is better at dealing with it; it can take several minutes to get a page count, but it's possible to read fine during that time.

i've definitely noticed that pinyin characters don't map clearly to a sound, since they merge different sounds that are only used in different contexts into one letter. i'd guess they were trying to remove extraneous information that's inherent in mandarin phonology from the script.

one of the more interesting cases of this is that there is a distinction between "nu" with an unrounded vowel and "nü" with a rounded vowel. but there is no "ju"/"jü" distinction, so the rounded vowel is written as "ju".

I'd say the biggest changes in computing in the past 25 years have more to do with centralization of information and communication around a small number of internet monopolies than to do with how computers function and the software that can run on them.
