A Florida couple surprised a middle schooler who was sitting in the dirt at her bus stop with a brand-new bench, and her reaction went viral.

Teachers Maren and David Douglass spotted the girl on their surveillance camera sitting on the ground at the end of their driveway, where her bus stop had been assigned, with no sidewalk to protect her from traffic.

So they installed a bench, and the doorbell camera caught her literally jumping for joy when she first saw it. “It was just the cutest reaction, her little jumps, and it just got sweeter from there,” Maren told People.

The girl left them a thank-you note saying, “Now I don’t have to worry about dirt and bugs, I appreciate it a ton!” The couple then added a stocked Little Free Library next to the bench, and now other neighborhood kids borrow and return books there too.

A support dog saved a man’s life by waking his deaf wife in the middle of the night after he fell down the stairs.

Sandra Donally, 62, of Staffordshire, England, was fast asleep when her support dog, Storm, suddenly leapt onto her bed shortly after midnight, according to Good News Network.

Sandra assumed her husband, Gary, was just in the bathroom, but Storm “sat ramrod straight at the other end of the bed, staring out towards the landing” and refused to move.

Sandra then found Gary crumpled at the bottom of the staircase, bleeding and unconscious, and he spent 24 days in the hospital undergoing reconstructive surgery on his broken jaw.

“We usually get up at half past six, so that’s when I would’ve noticed Gary wasn’t in bed. He’d have lain there for six hours, losing blood and with a broken jaw,” Sandra said. Sandra lost her hearing suddenly in 2017 and was paired with Storm in 2024, and she says, “I’ll always be so grateful to her for alerting me.”

The six hour procedure was led by ocular surgeon Professor Michele Reibaldi on 67 year old patient Elena, who had lost her left eye’s function when a road accident severed its optic nerve while leaving other tissue intact, while the crash destroyed her right eye’s retina, cornea and stem cell region but left its optic nerve undamaged.

Reibaldi and his team salvaged the intact tissue from her left eye, including the macula, a tiny light sensitive region responsible for high definition vision that had never been successfully transplanted before, and transferred it into her right eye where the nerve pathway remained functional.

Follow up exams have confirmed the tissue reattached properly and that Elena is regaining sight in that eye, with Reibaldi calling it a new frontier in ocular surgery and praising the team for the moment Elena opened her eyes and recognized her son and her dog, Joe. #Science #news

In 2013, following a spate of high-profile pesticide-related bee deaths, the state of Oregon set up a Pollinator Health Task Force. In the years since, around 13,000 licensed pesticide applicators have been trained to spot high-risk conditions and change how they work around bees.

The state has not recorded a confirmed pesticide-related bee kill since 2020.

A new philanthropic initiative called Intercept has launched with $500 million to develop preventative products (a shot, a nasal spray or pill) in combination with air-cleaning technologies to combat colds, flu, RSV, coronaviruses and other respiratory viruses.

The goal is to push at least two products through Phase 2 trials, while building real-world evidence for filtration, UVC and other clean-air tools in schools, offices and public transport.

The potential payoff is huge: respiratory infections cause billions of infections every year, imposing enormous health and productivity costs, yet they’re largely neglected by pharmaceutical companies. A century ago, diseases like cholera and typhoid were also widely accepted as an inevitable feature of human life, until better medicines, tools and infrastructure changed the game. What’s to say we can’t do the same here?
