I've found it's better at debugging JS though, not so much anything visual rendered in the browser. Still, it's sometimes a handy, but expensive, rubber duck to bounce ideas off.

I've done that a few times in the past with fetched content and I find that guesstimating the size is kind of unpredictable. Images and videos are easier as you're likely to know the aspect ratio but pretty much everything else is just a rough guess.

Still, for teaching & making proofs of concept parser blocking is fine if it could be pre-rendered server side in the end. The brief lazy-loading proposal got me thinking that you could drastically reduce DOM size on initial load too.

It was an interesting episode. Like Chris was saying, it's a problem you run into very early in creating web pages so a standards based solution would be very nice, even if it introduces layout shift or parser blocking.

Maybe it could be supplemented with optional server-side processing to flatten the imports, much like PostCSS does with CSS imports, bundlers with JS, server-side langs with template partials, etc. Resource hint headers are pretty handy to push unfound resources too.

Yeah, I was initially using localstorage but the flash on every load was annoying me. Using cookies and an edge function meant that I could save the preference and modify the HTML before it got to the user so no flash apart from on the first load.

I have no idea how some people are having families in this day and age. It's not like you can support an entire family on a single, mediocre income anymore. That's not even taking into account the time it takes to make that dough AND be present for the kids.
