Prices are going to stay crazy because the chip stock are physically depleted. Even if the forecast of 2027 as the peak crisis/Ai bubble burst, it is going to take all the follow years to begin to cover the demand for industry first, and only in the half of 2029 consumers could see the memory prices going down.
And this is an optimistic prevision.

Non perché fosse impossibile, ma è noto che avevano abbandonato l'idea anni fa per questioni tecniche e certi compromessi che avrebbe richiesto.

These cards have an option to share its memory with the system memory, means that these have no issue to run games that demands more than 8gb ram, and there are already some on the market.
However, the function in Windows doesn't work well because drivers, but on Linux it works automatically with no need of manual setup, and is much, much more stable and efficient.

Actually, I'm right trying to figure how build a gaming pc for a request, and 32gigs have skyrocketed already at 500€ here in Europe.
The only way I could solve is picking 1 module whatever would be good or not, because otherwise you haven't a pc, and scrape the second hand market because the only thing you could afford now are the venerable rx 590: good cards, but unfit for the demand of 2k of today.

I would give a shot to NetBSD for an emulation machine, too.
Is very lean as system, and still support 32 bit and dozen of abandoned platforms. You can pick any kind of board, from old pentium 1 to SPARK, and have an OS updated with the latest software. And if you don't go into Playstation, you haven't need much power.

Neverwinter Nights continues to crash at the module selection screen, but I'm able to say the issue happens when the game tries to load the module list, that most time fails. If succeed, the game works.

Its a game engine issue, not a graphic one.

Windows 11 in general is plagued by rotten code that everything, at this point, can run a window program better than windows itself.

On BSD you have some worse performance because if you use the open source AMD / Intel drivers, you have in truth more layers in middle, but if is meaningful, depends what you run.
I don't see a meaningful difference with FNV, but I'm sure it does with an heavy game like Cyberpunk 2077 that still struggle on modern machines.

Ran Fallout: New Vegas with it and the performance doesn't differs from Linux, except I got a black screen with the video, and there is a small graphical glitch related to lighting, but could be a regression.

Pretty much as I thought, games work better through Wine than Linuxulator because of the shader support.

At the moment on FreeBSD (and GhostBSD) is better use Wine-devel package than the stable one for some issues with the 32bit support.

With this I don't think there is much to do in any case. Maybe there are going to be improvements with FreeBSD 16.0.
Doesn't seems the game logic is slowed down, and there are no audio desynchs or distortions. It must be an issue around graphic drivers calls and the Stellaris engine that is infamous to be pointless heavy in this regards. You have some strutter also on Linux no matter how good is your machine.
In any case works without crashing.

It runs under compatibility layer without no special settings.
The bad thing, the execution hiccups badly that play it means you want hurt yourself.

If you have to deal with DRMs, anticheats, windows has less issues, and some Linux commercial ports are really trash. However, if you run something aged, Wine gives a uniform environment that runs smoother than try to patch stuff on windows itself on my experience.

FreeBSD seems offer nice performance too in various cases, but I'm going to try deeper in the close future.

I'm trying Waterfox (npub1gcd…4j0h) as browser from while, indeed is lighter as resources and the scrolling is, by default, a lot of smoother than other forks of Firefox I tried. Nice that includes also an adblock, that I pair with another privacy extension.
The only minus, it lacks of .deb packages, and I have to resort on flatpacks.
Well nothing is perfect, I guess.

For fix a code, you have to know it and understand the logic. And when you learn, you can do stuff quickly.

I spent hours today to find how run Long War Rebalanced for Xcom 1 (2012) under Linux. Digging, digging, digging, there are two installer scripts, one broken that probably turns out often with the search, and another one which works.

Do not use the other one, usually called "install_linux.bash", it just broke the installation.

Just because it made the grace of Intel and disgrace of Cyrix CPUs, everybody wanted upgrade the PC just for it, and brought the myth that Amiga would never run it decently games like that (then what about Rise of the Triad and clones?)

This slowdown in late game is caused by the massive calculation for pops and fleets by the program. In recent updates they changed the pop system that has improved a lot the issue.

What I had instead was a noticeable stutter moving the map, also in pause, using Xorg as videoserver; this is another issue of the game itself, but Xorg made it a lot worse.
Xlibre has fix what it could, the rest is an issue of the game.
I have to record it and show the difference soon or later.

The colors are also much better.
Still there is no way to rid it in this case, as far I know is Stellaris itself to strutter badly as way the game engine works.
Whatever you use Wayland or Xlibre, the best you can do is just minimize them.

It was a decent clone-like of Diablo, but it was repetitive after a while and some of the skills aren't at all much useful...

The characters are silly, but the story itself is enjoyable.
The game is mostly story driven, you have minigames and such, but in the demo these are very easy. They are more story device which you use to befriend or antagonize some characters, like you can sabotage their stuff to get a reaction from them.
I can recommend to check the demo if you seek an some kind of adventure game, than a challenge.

I think a porting would require a large code conversion, than a work to patch the base code with the machine workings; aka rewrite for good full chunks of code that probably you get a different version than a "port".
The issue, probably, would be a very low fps, that is more a proof of concept than playable in a way most would bear; expect if you are able to handle the FPS of 3d solid games for 8bits that is counted on the fingers of an hand. :P

The C128 VDC is a funny thing. Is a commodore clone of a CGA pc card, and has its own internal memory, that also the main machine "doesn't see" and is served only by the VDC chip itself.
This memory can also be expanded on any C128 with appropriate kit. With the max expansion it can reach some crazy resolution, up to 800x600 monocrome in some demo.
