In reply to nevent1q…8s7a
_________________________

Trolls manipulating public opinion on social media? 🤔 Companies promoting LLM coding tools aren't exactly "small guys". Who do you think is that highly influential puppeteer working against them, pulling the strings to organise such a disinformation campaign? This doesn't make sense to me at all and it looks *a lot* like a conspiracy theory.
And if it's not coordinated, then there is no "FUD campaign", they are people who have an opinion different from yours, they have their own reasons to dislike LLM tools, maybe different reasons, and these people organically find each other an flock together. If you want them to change their minds, like I already said, calling them trolls and dismissing their opinions won't work — it never worked with any polarising topic.
As for not being able to tell machine-generated code from human-written, I don't think that it's the point made in the opening post at all. It's about the project making a choice to implement an LLM-based submission process — and a maintainer who preferred to step down because this way they have to do more, not less. Does such a decision make sense? In their case sure does!
Another point made in the thread is that without due supervision LLMs produce poor code — that's a fact, they do require babysitting. The review process is LLM-based and LLMs favour LLM-generated code — this would lead to developers relying on LLM coding tools more and more, which could lead to less supervision and eventually to degrading coding standards, turning well-maintained code bases into unmanageable mess. Are such concerns ungrounded? Does not seem so, at least you can't say they are obviously wrong.
And neither of the points are about "purity tests" and being able to tell machine-generated code from human-written, in other words you are debating opinions not even present in this thread.

Is it wrong to share this opinion? It's obvious that the topic is very polarising, do you think that opinions you don't like should be just discarded in order to defeat what you consider a FUD campaign?
If you think these tools are actually good and relying on them does not pose any problems — go ahead, make great software with them. Let people see the results themselves, and maybe they reconsider, this actually works! Attacking people who have a different opinion with "No! You don't understand, these tools are actually good! Besides there's no going back now" does not work — it won't help you make people change their minds.

It's in Rust — but that is to be expected as the underlying technology is originally a part of Firefox, which itself is mostly implemented in Rust.

The translation quality is adequate, the result is a tiny bit different in the browser, but I believe this is due to models/dictionaries in my LibreSkunk being outdated

So it seems that even SimplyTranslate's Google backend is dead — sad, but not unexpected, considering how hard Google tries to make their stuff impossible to use outside Chrome.

Well, the translation engine built into Firefox seems pretty decent, now someone has to figure out how to use it outside Firefox, e.g. from command line — all the implementations I've seen so far still require headless Firefox in one form or another.

In Russia their offerings in several fields won in a free market competition long before current anti-competitive practices.

But yeah, virtually every company still operating in Russia participates at least in domestic surveillance, and maybe something worse. Of course they try to keep their brand names clean, but when push comes to shove — their resources might be used in foreign influence operations as well, you can never rule that out.

There is also this factor: I know that e.g. Google is bad, but I still trust them more — simply because even if they share data with their own three-letter agencies, those likely have little-to-no interest in me personally. And vice versa, I get it if an American avoiding domestic surveillance trusts Yandex more. But in EU in particular I'd indeed steer clear of companies still operating in Russia or their local branches, better be safe than sorry.

As for them accusing the Baltics of anti-competitive practices — yeah, they do it all the time, they are criticising democracies for things that are long gone in Russia, or even for things that we never had 😂

I know a lot of people from other countries use their services and like them, but let's not forget that domestically it's a big surveillance tool — it's our "big tech". FSB has realtime direct access to all the user's data: your cab rides, your online orders, of course all your email communication — no court order required even, they are legally obliged to share this data. I've been doing my best to avoid their services for about a decade now.
And they aren't just some "little man" standing alone against the state, they are a huge company with influence, with lobbying power, with access to the media. They haven't been fighting back when Internet censorship in Russia was gaining steam — they chose to comply, and now they are facing the consequences. The fact that they legally can't migrate their services to data centres in other countries is also the result of them not influencing policy when it was still possible. Now they'd probably be happy to make their services truly redundant — but they can't, all their infrastructure is in Russia and it's all in the reach of Ukrainian UAVs.

As for getting rid of "AI bots", if by bots we mean things pretending to be real humans sharing opinions, expressing grassroots support — I won't be holding your breath, it's ordinary people who don't have access to foreign LLMs, those responsible for disinformation campaigns rely on foreign models all the time: https://politics.slashdot.org/story/26/10/10/0537232/openai-disrupts-two-ai-enabled-false-front-influence-operations-that-included-seven-fake-journalists
This is just one of the many news about such cases, this one's about OpenAI's ChatGPT, there are similiar ones about Claude, you can look it up. Then there are Chines models — the ones spreading disinformation will keep access to them, and they will keep abusing it.

But yes, there is Alice AI, and it was rumoured, that it would soon be made obligatory to pre-install it on all phones sold in Russia, and that it's app should be given extensive permissions, e.g. to access data from banking apps, you can imagine what it was supposed to be used for!
Two of Yandex supercomputers used for training their LLM were damaged in the very first strike, and the third one in the most recent one. Heavily damaged or destroyed. Without them their capacity to train the model would be severely limited. Restoring this equipment under sanctions might take months and would cost a lot — circumventing sanctions when importing compute-oriented GPUs cost premium. So yes, there is still a certain merit in these attacks.
Yandex is certainly not the enterprise deserving anyone's sympathy, I've been making jokes about "Alice going dumb" online since the very first strike — it's not celebrating civilian's deaths, and in a way the outcome might be liberating even for Russians.

Oh my! I've been seriously underestimating the importance of NOT using a low-powered ARM machine from 20 years ago in conservative powersaving mode as proxy…

This is me connected to Squid over a SSH tunnel, which is then tunnelled to Luxembourg over Wireguard. But this machine isn't even my router, the router then wraps it in a tunnel that allows me using IPv6 with entry point in, I believe, Poland… And it's still not half bad!

Living in an apartment block I have little control over it: the company providing the utilities usually turns off central heating or tones it down considerably when the season is over and it gets warmer — it's just that they sometimes do it prematurely 😅
According to the forecast it would even be snowing in the next few days, so they have brought some of it back now — yesterday it was considerably colder, I even had to dress the cats up to avoid resorting to electric heating. When it's cold instead of lounging all day they get naughty and start doing cat things™ x10: jumping around, stealing things — so I don't like when they are cold either 😹

In this case, even if things go terribly wrong, I only have to wait for 15 minutes.

OMG, Librewolf now has JPEG XL support — complete with animation, transparency and colour management! 😲

Most likely thanks to new Rust implementation in mainline Firefox 🤔

Sadly, #IronFox is nothing like that and still doesn't have even the most basic support. It's about the context: they are explaining operator overloading, plus in the example, so they should be using things adding which to one another would seem natural, mixing drinks having different ingredients would feel intuitive, but their example to me was like: adding… points, WTF? 🤔 Oh, I see…

While typing my post I stumbled upon this: https://math.stackexchange.com/questions/645672/what-is-the-difference-between-a-point-and-a-vector
Some insist that in linear algebra, it would be okay to add points because they are the same from the point of data and then get into semantics.
After reading that and realising that I'm not the first one to run into this, I even wanted to discard my post and then pressed submit by accident 😂

But now that I think about it, even if some consider adding points okay, my point still stands: it's okay to say: "There is something behind that bush, probably a wolf",— if it turns out a dog, no one would be surprised. You can even say: "It's just a big dog",— explaining wolf to a child, but when you are using dog for wolf in a textbook explaining different concept, it still feels out of place — using broader term like "canine" would probably be better.

This is example from The Rust Programming Language book demonstrating operator overloading.
Okay, I get it they needed a simple structure with a couple of fields to demonstrate the… ehm, point. But operator overloading is what you do when you want to make something feel more natural and… what's the mathematical meaning of adding one point to another? AFAIR in geometry you don't do that — you can add two vectors starting in the point of origin and ending at specified coordinates, you can subtract pairs of coordinates and find the lenght of the resulting vector to learn the distance, but this makes no sense — you dont add *points* to each other per se!

It would make more sense if it was Drink { rum: i32, cola: i32 } or Basket { mushrooms: i32, potatoes: i32 }. Of course one can figure out that Point is just a pair of coordinates here, then name it Coord or Displacement and leave x and y be — now that feels natural, adding points just feels weird 🥴

In reply to nevent1q…2mtq
_________________________

So, disabling inactive (no devices connected) Bluetooth with rfkill and explicitly bringing down also already inactive (no cable plugged in) wired network interface with "ip link set down dev (interface_name_dreamt_up_by_poettering)" enabled me to reset BD_PROCHOT (unrelated to prosciutto, it means "bi-directional processor ♨️" in Intel-speak) in MSR, which Mac EFI sets if when you boot the thing without battery — to prevent it from crossing the threshold of power input that adapter is able to provide and avoid unexpected shutdowns.

And what can I say, now I can run this i7 clocked at 2,4 GHz — its designated frequency! This is what I observe over SSH session — yes, I've made a "hardware performance monitor" out of feces and sticks (continuous reads from /sys with cat 🫢), all of its real cores and their HitlerThreading-spawned evil twins run at 2400MHz, and its both fans went slightly beyond their limit of 5500 RPM. I'm not sure how accurate powertop readings are, but CPU power consumption is currently at ~28W, I've seen it go as high as 32W while building GCC — still not even close to its theoretical limit, which according to Intel datasheet is 45W. Perhaps due to the fact that I have TurboBustier👙™ disabled — I'm not sure sacrificing stability for the option to have these single-core "bursts" is a good idea. Another contributing factor could be the fact that its display is off and I believe that power draw of its integrated Intel GPU is accounted for in CPU TDP.

First lesson to learn here is that life without battery and infamous BD_PROCHOT hard-locking frequencies at 800MHz is possible! Playing back 4k videos for which it doesn't have hardware decoding capability can still cause it to power off. Contributing factors could be integrated GPU activity, audio output, slightly different CPU workload and even something as obvious as display backlight 😏
But normal workloads are okay: I've already built Firefox for three architectures and currently in the process of cross-building LLVM for Big Endian 64-bit PowerPC — seems very stable!

And the second one, again I'm not sure how accurate PowerTop readings are, and maybe integrated Intel ethernet adapters are better in this regard, this MacBook has a Broadcom one handled by tg3 kernel module.
But wired interface without any cable even plugged in drawing almost as much as panel backlight at medium brightness, substantially more that wireless adapter connected to a network and actually transmitting data — wow, that's some exceptionally bad power management! 😲
Instead of improving it — making it even remotely as good as it is for wireless networking, they just got rid of integrated wired network adapters in most laptops! 😩

I have a newer replacement battery with which this does not happen. The phone has a user-replaceable battery, so it's much less of a problem, and yet, if I was given an option to update it and have throttling — I would very much prefer that to random reboots.
Of course I can't be sure that Apple's actual motivation wasn't fucking people over, what I can say is that the problem is very real and not Apple-specific. Of course they could've handled it better — informing their users or adding a user-facing switch. Then again, Apple isn't exactly famous for giving their customers choice, I'm also not sure adding a switch is a good enough solution — because in the most severe cases it might prevent the system from loading, so you could turn throttling back on, and it would be like:
— Do you want your phone to be slow?
— Of course not!
— Boom! Now you can't turn it on anymore without visiting SC — even to back up your data (power bypass wasn't a thing in phones at the time, the OS was either able to start on battery power or not at all).

Nitter had a couple of "problematic" dependencies which I replaced with ones that offered near-identical functionality, but relied of C code and which were basically just bindings for C code in Nim — and Nitter started working for me.
I no longer use Nitter, but I like this little text web browser in Nim — Chawan: https://git.sr.ht/~bptato/chawan
It's really cool, with CSS support and all. And some web page elements are rendered very narrow on a 32-bit PowerPC, but I never run into this issue on neither my 64-bit Intel machines, nor even on a 32-bit ARM one — and to me this appears like that old issue again. I've written down commits between which this issue appears, but then I became a lazy ass and never narrowed it down further — down to particular code. It would make more sense for me to learn Nim properly first — I mean of course I can read some of it, which was enough to replace dependencies in Nitter with others, but most of the time, looking at Nim code I'm more like: WTF does this shit mean?! 🤪

Transmission Bittorrent software 4.0.6 has this "tracker flooding issue" on dual stack systems having both IPv4 and IPv6 connectivity — it keeps making requests when tracker url isn't reachable on either of its addresses.
https://github.com/transmission/transmission/issues/7078

Some trackers go as far as banning 4.0.6 explicitly. Okay, so I build older 4.0.5 and downgrade to it…

The issue gets a fix, but no version gets released with the fix. Until one day 4.1.0 gets released — and I update a bunch of libraries it depends on, so that won't have to touch it in the near future and just let it be…

Turns out it still has the issue — and the code causing the issue was contributed by the exact same person as the last time 🤦
https://github.com/transmission/transmission/pull/8631
It's not as bad as 4.0.6, but it can't be considered a proper fix, and considering it a long-term version to upgrade to might not be the best idea!

FFS, the poor 32-bit 1,5 GHz PowerPC machine with only a gigabyte of RAM on which this instance is hosted had to build all those libraries in vain 😩

Silo seems like a nicely made show, but I'm still not sure I like it: first of all, supporting characters' plot lines — they are supposed to make them relatable, but fall short. The way these characters exist for one episode and then get killed and thrown out of the window reminds me of Russian direct-to-TV shows, when they fail to make the main plot interesting enough and put more effort in individual episodes. For example when they are making a crime/detective/mystery show in True Detective's vein, they would have a different murderer every episode — making episodes self-sufficient in a way.

Second, the main plot… Excuse my ageism, but I'm not 13 anymore and I can't take this Divergent-style stuff: "Some people are special: they ask questions, they break the rules — and they are special because… they get born special".
It could work if it was a coming of age story disguised as something else, but main characters aren't teenagers either, which makes this trope misplaced.

Also, "a beautiful revolutionary" here is no revolutionary at all — he's a man on of state, but at least Lady Jessica is her usual self 😏

But if those seeking validation choose to spend their time on interacting with the later, then they somehow deserve each other.

Pinning a "sealion" label on someone on the other hand is the best of both worlds: you can keep holding opinions you can't even explain in your own words AND it somehow places you above the fray, which gives you additional warm and fuzzy feeling 😁

Turns out that it originated with a video of two girls discussing a press release of some fashion brand that had lots of em dashes in it — they didn't even call it "ChatGPT hyphen" at the time — it was still a hyphen, but some other kind, attributing it solely to ChatGPT is a later addition 😆
Now the most bizarre part — they don't even dislike LLM-based chat bots, they consider them nice tools that are okay to use, they just think that making use of these tool too obvious is disrespectful to customers, so what they think the company should have done is *replace* em dash with minus or something in that vein.

Apparently the video became popular enough for some to start calling it "ChatGPT hyphen", those who think that using em dash is something out of the ordinary enjoy this kind of influence.
I have no idea how I would be re-joining the workforce with this kind of people around… 😅

Considering the journalists haven't made all of this up — I didn't go as far as fact-checking any of it.

Doing it all the time for WIP projects makes little sense because soon you might find yourself with hundreds of duplicates of stuff that is already in you instrument library — but it's a wise thing to do before archiving finished projects.
I have a few projects with missing parts myself, but luckily, I still have full hard disk images of my computers from two decades ago and the fact that all this stuff is theoretically there somewhere gives me a warm fuzzy feeling 😁

Now this is what pure unadulterated going to the gym with a forklift is: look, I did the exact thing others do to learn something new — building a toy OS, except — I did it with a thing that wrote all the code for me 🤪

Building a 64-bit OS from Scratch with Claude Code: https://isene.org/2025/11/SimplicityOS.html

This is simply priceless: it's like paying someone to do advent of code for you: you do not produce something that has practical value, you do not produce something new for research purposes, and you learn nothing in the process — the only reason why this could have been done is to produce marketing material for Anthropic, but even for this purpose it's not so good: "Look, it can do this too!"— well, of course it can, it's been done bazillion times before, it's literally textbook shit!

Well, at least it has FORTH — this is what cool kids like, right? I was looking for something .onion a few days ago to check if my proxy handles it correctly and routes such traffic through TOR, because even DDG .onion frontend was redirecting me to the clearnet one if I had JS disabled 🤪
Now I see that my proxy in fact works correctly and it's probably a DDG peculiarity.

Mac Mini sitting on top of a bookcase) is fine.
It's just a pun on Signal being a secure messenger, but relying on third-party infrastructure.
Nothing wrong with relying on others' infrastructure per-se, I'm not one of those full-on paranoid types — but the founders of Signal probably are. I mean, now that they have added a third "post-quantum" ratchet, the data is resistant to being brute forced by quantum computers: https://it.slashdot.org/story/25/10/19/0546205/why-signals-post-quantum-makeover-is-an-amazing-engineering-achievement
But this improvement itself assumes that earlier data IS vulnerable to store now, decrypt later attacks — from this POV using AWS is an awful practice, so relying on others' infra is bad according to them, not me 🙃

Look at midrange phones by Xiaomi: some of them are targeted at mobile gamers and have more powerful SnappyDragon chips — no SD, no jack; some of them have top-tier Mediatek chips and look — phone output and SD slot; some midrangers have SoCs that belongs in the same category — SleepyDragon 4/5/6, and they also have SD card slots and headphone out 🤷
I think it has something to do with top SoCs lacking built-in DAC capabilities or something — and no one wants to shell out extra for a dedicated chip. Sharp have been keeping this up and their flagships used to have everything — but even they are seemingly giving up.
I don't get why wired headphones are considered something cheap, all my wired headphones cost more than the bluetooth rubbish a lot of people use, but apparently, they are. It probably got revealed to some visionary at Qualcomm in a mushroom trip 🤪
