Today I had to break into the DIY vanilla extract that I made during the COVID lockdown times when I was running low (desperate times and all that). The vanilla that is sold in Italy comes in tiny little vials, not like my big Costco bottles. I had bottles of liquor that had been here since we bought the house in 2001, so these were well-aged! And they have been steeping in vanilla since 2021, so I'm thinking it should be serviceable. The one I made with Cointreau smells divine!

When I explained this to my friend, she gave me two linen table runners that had been her mother's favorites. We just got back from dinner with our neighbors on the hill, which is always a challenge with our still-limited-even-after-all-these-years Italian. My poor RFL can't seem to master that whole double consonant thing, so he ended up calling the wife his "penis friend" instead of "pen pal." It won't be long now! The olives this year look abundant and healthy. The extreme heat killed the insects that plagued us last year. We will probably start the harvest next weekend. Assuming we don't have a windstorm, hailstorm or earthquake before then, we should have a really nice harvest. The last time our olives looked this good, we had an earthquake literally the morning of the harvest and we lost about 1/3 of the olives. So fingers crossed. #Umbria

I spent the morning making a big pot of ribollita, my first favorite Italian food. When I had it in Florence on my first trip to Italy 31 years ago, I remember thinking: "I must have this in my life." I scoured Italian cookbooks in bookstores until I found one that had the recipe (The River Cafe) It became one of my go-to recipes. When I've mentioned wanting to make it (it's been a while), the RFL always said "wait until the fall." Well it's fall now, finally!

It's kind of like the perfect storm for the Keys. First the Canadians stop coming down. Then people can't afford gas for road trips, so the Americans stop coming. Then the day trippers from Miami stop coming because who can afford diesel for their boats to go fishing or diving? For too long we've relied upon potential civil liability as the primary means of deterring harmful behavior. But the system is expensive and slow, for all that it has been effective. These guys want to get in front of all that by getting preemptive immunity from liability which is just insane when you think about the fact that they are essentially unleashing a dangerous instrumentality with unknown potential for harm.

Today marks 25 years since we arrived in #Umbria forthe month-long vacation that would change our lives. In the wake of 9/11, the peace we found here made us want to claim a part of it for ourselves. We made it to the Torrance House today. The ancient seat of the Torrance Parrish - the ancient seat of my Scottish ancestors- now has a golf club, a children's zoo, and nature trails through the old Torrance lands. I was just so excited. Walking through the trails beside a creek my ancestors probably drank from was such a thrill. What a great way to end our adventure in #Scotland.

Today was one of the highlights of our trip to #Scotland. I got to visit the graveyard where my 5x great-grandfather is reported to have been buried. His son came to the US in 1755 and served as a quartermaster in the Revolution, and is buried in Milledgeville. Even though we couldn't identify his grave, it was still really something to stand there and draw a straight line from Scotland to GA. I'm looking forward to our last couple of days, which we will spend in the area of "my people."

It still blows my mind that my high school theater revue put on a somewhat sanitized version of Rocky Horror in 1975. In Middle GA! Even though some lyrics were tamed, the story was clear enough. Every year our theater teacher would go to NYC with some of his hand-picked students to take in the plays and pick out what to include in the next show. I would have liked to have been a fly on the wall during that trip!

Today we went to the Fairy Pools on the #IsleOfSkye. After we navigated the immense parking lot and stood in line to pay for parking, we and a zillion other tourists headed down the slope to take pictures of waterfalls and streams. And then, being elderly people, we struggled back up the hill. But the most interesting thing to me was this lady. When I grow up, I want to be the lady who skips the crowds and the marked path to take her chair into the meadow on a fine day with a good book.

We went through Pitlochry. And yes, the midges have found me!

It is amazing. We took the proverbial road less taken today, and I was in heaven. Yesterday we headed out to one of the Big Must See sites, and after an hour on a single track road, we took one look at the parking lot and said "Nah. Not in the mood to climb a mountain anyway. We're elderly, you know?" So we saw the Big Thing from a distance and drove back through the traffic to get lunch. But this morning was completely magical.
