For PyCon AU 2023, we paid a non-trivial amount extra (I can’t disclose how much) to have a ramp on our main stage, as compared to the standard setup that was steps only.

We didn’t have specific speakers that we knew about that absolutely needed that ramp, but it means that I can say with confidence that nobody looked at a stage with stairs and felt like they didn’t belong on that stage, and it also means that nobody had that particular barrier to access for lightning talks or other things where you might get on stage without having planned to in advance.

And I have no idea how many people that applies to, because stairs can be a challenge even for people with invisible disabilities that they haven’t disclosed to us as organisers and we obviously can’t ask.

Everything is a cost-benefit tradeoff, and there were other accessibility things we couldn’t afford, but it’s important to consider “sending a message about who belongs” among the benefits.

I recall there being a couple of somewhat pivotal articles about the idea that 10x developers end up externalising the cost of their velocity onto others in the form of cleanup and technical debt, and I think also looking at it through a gender/feminist lens.

All over the industry, people are being pressured to use these things not just directly, but also indirectly through increased pressure to deliver fast and decreased emphasis on quality. (All things that were happening already but have been accelerated by LLMs, but that’s another story.)

It’s not hard to imagine engineers at every level of seniority that want to focus on quality and hone their skills but don’t feel that they are allowed to.

Yeah. I have a gut feeling that we as an industry are barreling towards a maintenance crisis that we are going to have to reckon with, on account of LLMs’ tendencies towards unnecessary complexity and huge volumes of code. Like, there are a number of different possible futures where LLMs cannot realistically be used to maintain the code that they wrote, and if any of those futures come to pass, unfucking the mess is going to be an enormous undertaking.

The fact that basically all LLMs disclaim any and all commitments to quality, correctness, and usefulness feels like not only one of the most damning things about them. More than that, it also cements my feeling that they represent the final boss of the sort of business “leader” who sees all things as fungible, spherical cows in a vacuum, and the endeavour of providing a product or service that people actually use as a tedious distraction from the real goal of converting money into even more money.

This is the other thing. I think the output is generally slightly better quality when you are walking well-trodden ground. Over the past six months or so I’ve been working on something where knowing the correct behaviour depends on understanding a lot of the internals of our product AND the strict regulatory environment of the sector our product is built for, and if you get it wrong you get extremely large fines, and it is astonishingly bad for that.

But the other side of the coin is that well-trodden ground is what software libraries are for. It feels like LLMs kind of become a way of probabilistically generating bespoke libraries that might align with what you need more so than something off PyPI does, at the cost of having to critically analyse every line (as well as the environmental and social costs of LLMs).

This has been my experience when using Claude Code too. I feel like the time that it takes to rework its output matches or exceeds the time it would have taken to just write the code. And the issues I have to fix vary from code that will be difficult to maintain, to code that only works for a very narrow ideal case, to code that just plain will not do what it is supposed to do.

And that has really changed my perception of people who claim that it’s a huge productivity booster for them, to be honest. Like I don’t know if they’re using the tool heaps differently and getting better results, or they’re doing the same rework as I’m doing and just not perceiving it as a slowdown, or if they have different and much more permissive quality standards to mine.

Genuinely one of the worst things for me about the vibe coding apocalypse is that it is steadily eroding my patience in code review.

It used to be that if you identified issues with someone’s code, you could explain why, and help your coworker learn and grow as a professional. And sometimes they’d respond by explaining why they did it that way, and then you get to learn and grow as well.

Now a lot of the time when I do code review, I feel like I’m not actually investing my time in learning, just giving them something to copy paste into an AI chatbot without engaging with either the code or the feedback.

If the genAI does what it is supposed to do, the bosses can lay off workers. If the genAI doesn’t do what it’s supposed to do, the bosses can lay off workers on the pretence that it does, insulate themselves from accountability for the resulting short-term failures in a million different ways, and then re-hire those same workers for less pay and worse conditions.

Im generally pretty sour on the whole LLM/genAI hype train, but one area where I genuinely think it has promise is *parsing* natural language.

For instance, LLMs seem to be WAY better at parsing instructions than eg current Siri, and while I don’t care for the generative bits of “Apple Intelligence” I’m looking forward to Siri improvements.

Also I’d love a tool that can take an booking confirmation page or a text from a friend make a calendar entry, and LLMs seem to be very good at that.
