Compare that with the seemingly endless, rolling coverage Nigel Farage receives whenever he makes an announcement. The anticipation beforehand, the live coverage during, the analysis afterwards, followed by endless discussion of what it might all mean.

Yet when serious questions arise about the conduct of Reform UK representatives, where is that same intensity of scrutiny?

I'm disappointed by the BBC's apparent lack of urgency and prominence in covering this story.

The BBC's Royal Charter commits it to providing impartial news and information that helps people understand and engage with the world around them.

That responsibility surely extends beyond amplifying political announcements to rigorously scrutinising those seeking or holding public office.

Impartiality doesn't mean giving every story equal airtime, but it should mean applying consistent editorial standards, regardless of the party involved.

The public deserves journalism that holds political power to account, not simply coverage that gives politicians a platform.

Heatwaves have been going on all summer. The government has had weeks to figure out a communications strategy to get people to stop having BBQs.

Yet there has been barely any comms via conventional media. I have not seen a single government minister go on telly and say people should not have BBQs.

They had time to plan, but they failed.

Even if an alert was the only option, it could have been a text/WhatsApp message.

Instead they went for the option that will wake babies up and frightened elderly/vulnerable people. It also reduces the impact that future - more serious - security alerts may have.

Don't get me wrong, the sentiment of the alert is absolutely right, but it should never have come to this.

Meanwhile, the government continues to do very little to actually tackle climate change.

Combined with recent reporting by The Sunday Times and others, serious questions are being asked about political donations, due diligence and whether our electoral laws are fit for purpose.

If wealthy donors can exploit loopholes to channel money into politics, Parliament needs to ask whether the rules are protecting democracy or simply creating the appearance of transparency.

In a video address that played at the Farnborough airshow before Streeting gave a speech, Burnham said “we are going to reindustrialise this nation” and that increased spending on “defence” would play a key role.

Burnham wants to raise military spending from 2.6% of GDP to 3.5%, which would bring it to levels not seen since shortly after the end of the Cold War.

Streeting said in his speech that US president Donald Trump “is right” to tell European countries to spend more on defence. “That’s why we’ve committed £298bn over the next four years, including an additional £15bn on top of last year’s Spending Review settlement,” he said.

In a briefing after the speech, he said increased military spending would come at “an opportunity cost across government”, the Guardian reported.

Streeting was criticised this week after it was revealed he took over £50k from donors linked to Israeli weapons and to the military spytech firm Palantir.

Responding to Streeting and Burnham’s comments, journalist Paul Holden said on X: “This is stupid, short-sighted and ignorant. Defence spending is a terrible vector for economic growth, industrialisation and job creation… profits from defence spending will flow into the pockets of the 1%.

“If you are hoping to re-industrialise through defence spending it will cost you vastly more, engender huge waste through the industry's addiction to single-source procurement and widespread corruption, and lock the UK into a defence export regime that ties us to authoritarian dictatorships.”

Martin Abrams, the Green party’s leader of Lambeth Council, wrote on X: “Why was Andy Burnham addressing a UK arms fair with several Israeli arms manufacturers in attendance?”

These firms included Elbit Systems, Rafael Advanced Defense Systems and Israel Aerospace Industries - all named by Amnesty International as “contributing to Israel’s unlawful occupation, genocide or other crimes under international law”.

“This is what complicity in genocide looks like,” Abrams said.

You only spend on defence for strategic reasons: there is no economic case for spending money on defence versus nearly any other sector.

If you are hoping to re-industrialise through defence spending it will cost you vastly more, engender huge waste through the industry's addiction to single-souce procurement and widespread corruption, and lock the UK into a defence export regime that ties us to authoritarian dictatorships and the sort of hawkish militarism that has scarred the Middle East for years. It will also deepen our economic inter-dependence on the US, and we've just seen where that leads - refusing to stop selling F-35 parts to Israel because the US won't countenance any disruption to Lockheed's supply chains as a matter of commercial principle.

If you are increasing defence spending at the expense of infrastructure spending, or investing in renewable, or health technology, or climate change mitigation, or education, you are actively retarding economic growth.

What is also not fully understood is the extent of the transformation in the ownership patterns of UK defence companies - most big players have significant shareholding held by the gargantuan multinational hedge funds.

Profits from defence spending will flow into the pockets of the 1% who are the ultimate beneficiaries of hedge funds: and into the corrupting networks of influence, like lobbyists and pet think-tanks that push outdated national security perspectives over human security.

Dispiriting, depressing stuff.
