Teasley, who wrote about his belief he was transgender in his diary in the days leading up to the slaying, told police he had viciously murdered 29-year-old Lauren Heike in April 2023 after flying into a jealous rage over her beauty. The court heard that Teasley ambushed Heike and chased her along a hiking trail located near her home in Arizona before repeatedly stabbing her to death. Teasley and the victim had never interacted before the killing. He then abandoned her body, which a neighbor discovered while walking their dog a few days later. Police arrested Teasley after connecting him to DNA evidence found on Heike’s shoe. Days after killing her, Teasley accessed photos of Heike from her social media accounts. Investigators also reportedly found photos of him wearing an outfit they say was similar to what Heike was wearing when he stabbed her to death. Detectives discovered that Teasley had been fired from his job for being “aggressive toward female employees” and for being suspected of stealing products.

During the course of the investigation into Heike’s murder, law enforcement also found that Teasley had knowingly received child pornography in 2019 or 2020. He pleaded guilty to one count of sexual exploitation of a minor for possessing child pornography. Teasley’s attorneys referred to their client with feminine pronouns in the courtroom. The convicted killer has criminal charges dating back to 2020, and just five months before the slaying, he had been released after serving a three-year jail sentence for armed robbery. In August 2024, aggravated assault and burglary charges were filed against Teasley for a January 2020 attack against another woman. The case also involved a knife, but the victim survived. According to the LGBTQ+ Bar Association, the state of Arizona allows trans-identified male convicts to be transferred into a women’s correctional facility. Inmates are initially processed on the basis of sex, but accommodation requests may be granted after undergoing a review conducted by a Transgender/Intersex Committee appointed by the state’s Department of Corrections, Rehabilitation and Reentry (ADCRR).

Judge Adam Hiddleston, sentencing, described their offending as on an 'enormous scale financially' and labelled the gang's criminality as 'highly organised and sophisticated'.

Out of this tragedy, some concerning trends have emerged. Online spectators are posting their trial takes as if they’re kids spotting clues in a fictional whodunnit, while others are performing “postpartum tantrums” as if becoming psychotic and killing infants was good fodder for comedy sketches. Everyone has an opinion, and most have personal agendas.
Who does livestreaming this horrific, complex ordeal really benefit? Video coverage of criminal trials is not a requirement. Whether courts should allow it is a live debate. On the one hand, video allows the public to observe justice directly and can expose misleading accounts. On the other hand, cameras change court participants’ behaviour, turning proceedings into entertainment, and can produce misleading reporting that goes viral on social media.

One online “therapist” posting about the Clancy trial shared a 10-minute rant to her 100,000+ TikTok followers, captioned “the prosecution’s lies”. A social worker, she presented herself as an authority, alleging that she worked at a hospital where Clancy once received treatment. But she admitted she didn’t personally treat Clancy, and had stopped working at the hospital before Clancy was ever treated there. Clancy’s lawyer found the viral video and tried to make the woman a defense witness. She was called to court — which garnered media attention — and presented evidence while the jury wasn’t there. Her “evidence” wasn’t material: she was simply “emotional” about the livestreamed trial describing hospital staffing levels in a way that was “not aligned” with her lived “experience”. Judge William Sullivan did not allow her testimony. But she has already benefited from the media attention.

FOI requests to the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) have revealed that the DWP, along with the tax office (HMRC), considers self-employment as an OnlyFans ‘creator’ to be regular self-employment, not significantly different from being a plumber or hairdresser for example.

Under DWP rules, jobseekers and Universal Credit claimants who are self-employed are given an amount that they are expected to achieve through their self-employment each month. This is called their minimum income floor (MIF) and these claimants “must take active steps to achieve their MIF”. Work coaches assess whether claimants are taking “appropriate steps” to achieve their MIF and if not, they may put pressure on claimants to do so, with the potential threat of sanctions, including a reduction in the amount of benefit they receive. While some women make a lot of money on OnlyFans, the vast majority make very little, with average monthly earnings being about £130. The main way that a woman can increase her OnlyFans income is by creating more explicit and degrading content and promoting this by posting clips of it on mainstream social media sites, including TikTok, Instagram and similar, where children are likely to be present.

The DWP does not consider that treating OnlyFans as regular self-employment in this way breaches Section 2A of the Employment and Training Act 1973 (ETA), which bans the DWP making “arrangements in respect of employment for sexual purposes”. Furthermore, the DWP has no plans to extend the scope of the ETA to cover self-employment on OnlyFans and similar. This means that the DWP is complicit in the commercial sexual exploitation of (mainly) young women and in increasing the amount of pornographic material that children are likely to be exposed to. This also suggests that Dame Diana Johnson, Minister for Employment, misled Parliament in her response to questions from Rosie Duffield on 8 December 2025. There’s more on this below.

I don’t always agree with the policies of the Scottish Green Party, as readers of this column may be aware, but I think the party’s principled opposition to the former SNP MSP Ash Regan’s bill to outlaw prostitution is well founded.

But we are not just talking about women here. Many homosexual men, transgender people and other non-binary folk make their living by providing sexual services. One hundred and twenty of them appealed to the Scottish parliament last week not to stumble into a measure that takes no account of their safety or wellbeing. LGBTQ+ sex workers see no shame in using their bodies in the way they choose. Who is to say that they should not be allowed to?

Sex work isn’t going to go away. It isn’t called the oldest profession for nothing. There will always be people of either sex who, for whatever reason — such as disability, shyness or because their partner has ceased sexual relations — will seek people willing to provide sexual services. So, like the prohibition of alcohol, prohibition of prostitution is bound to fail. It may offend some puritans who are appalled by promiscuity, but young people seem entirely relaxed about sex work, provided it is consensual. Indeed, a majority of adults in Britain oppose criminalisation. Regan’s “unbuyable bill” tries to reframe sex work, by definition, as male violence against women. She evidently believes, contrary to the evidence of organisations like Scot-Pep, a charity led by sex workers, and Scotland 4 Decrim, that all sex workers are sex slaves. She claims that the Nordic model has had success in reducing violence against women in Sweden.
