This tree has grown much larger than the size on the nursery tag implied, threatening the sidewalk and the overhead power line. Getting it out is harder than I thought. I'm surprised at the difference in trunk diameter under the line where it was grafted. No chance of getting a stump grinder up here; I'll need to sever all these roots and then use the trunk as a lever to rock the ball back and forth until I can tip it over.
#PNW #Gardening #fall #Bloomscrolling

The first step is to lift out the plants I'm keeping. I originally planted about 12 tall oriental lilies here: yesterday I pulled out over 40. I'll keep a few and plant the remainder in back. I'm also dividing the tall hardy Begonia grandis 'Alba' and pulling some out. I'll have to find a space for this orphaned Leucothoe shrub too; I got it before I had really gotten a good idea of what plant palette works in this space.
#PNW #Gardening #fall #Bloomscrolling

Fall is garden renovation season in the #PNW. This is the best time to move plants. I'm in the middle of renovating this bed in the front of my house. It's overgrown and overrun with lilies; the small Japanese maple I planted in 2014 has overgrown its space and now threatens the overhead power line. Photo 1 & 2 show it in July 2022--peak year for it. Photo 3 is from the other side-- the lilies are lovely but they're overrunning everything else. Well our dry season is over, rain is setting for good tomorrow. Time to cover these wooden sculptures in my garden. They're sealed with an oil based finish that has UV protection and anti-fungal ingredients but our climate in the #pnw is hard on wood. So I cover them with garbage bags for the winter. Needs to be done after a spate of dry days like we had this week, so it doesn't trap moisture under the plastic. #sculpture #Gardening #fall

I had no idea what this little purple thing was--turns out it's a Delphinium! Plant ID app says maybe it's Sutherland's larkspur (Delphinium sutherlandii). BONAP says that species is only found in far Northeast Washington, not here, but it's still the most likely ID based on flower size and color. For sure a Delphinium, but it's a far cry from the gigantic double-flowered cultivars you see at the nursery.
#PNW #hiking #getoutside #mountains

There's a small alpine lake up here called Foggy Lake. Here's it is, still partially frozen. If you look closely you can see some people there for scale. I'm not sure why they call it Gothic Basin but I'd like to believe it's because these incredible triangular peaks look a bit like the rooflines of Gothic cathedrals. Anyway thanks for following me to the end of the trail/end of thread. #hiking #nativeplants #PNW #getoutside

There's not much growing up here except heather. It's blooming already and the snow has barely gone. The growing season up here is only maybe 4 months long so plants get busy quick. It's also why these alpine ecosystems are so fragile--every broken twig takes years and years to regrow. If those little flowers look familiar it's because blueberries are also in the heather family (Ericaceae).
#hiking #nativeplants #PNW #getoutside

Look at the absolutely stunning little tableau of plant life on this stump. Looks like it consists of more Primula jeffreyi, a wee little deer fern, and a kind of club moss called Lycopodium clavatum (which apparently some people call elk moss?). It's a living fossil--club mosses are primitive plants that were amongst the first to colonize land almost half a billion years ago. #hiking #nativeplants #PNW #getoutside

Dodecatheon jeffreyi/Primula jeffreyi. Shooting star is the common name for these. I see the white ones pretty regularly but I seldom see the purple ones. Aruncus dioicus or goat's beard, a plant found all around the Northern Hemisphere that almost no one notices except when it's flowering. Aquilegia formosa, our native columbine. Formosa in this case just means well formed and has nothing to do with Taiwan.
#hiking #nativeplants #PNW #getoutside

Lowland Forest is damp and still soggy from snowmelt above. Contrast the giant leaves of Western skunk cabbage (Lysichiton americanus) with our native horse tail (Equisetum hymenale). Cow parsnip (Heracleum maximum) in bloom-- look at all the diverse little insects stuck into it. These plants are edible but they look very much like a couple others that are really toxic, so maybe don't eat them.

#hiking #nativeplants #PNW #getoutside

Here's another hiking thread with plants--my trip yesterday trip to Gothic Basin, in the Cascade Mountains of Washington State, 2 hours' drive NE of Seattle. It's right near the old mining ghost town of Monte Cristo which has its own crazy history. That's for another day. Today we're going up, up, up past the snow line. A short thread.
#hiking #nativeplants #PNW #getoutside

It may well be botrytis. That seems the closest match. We had almost no frost last winter it was be if the warmest on record so I'm sure it's not frost damage. The clue for me is the "disparate" photo. Some clusters affected and others not. Which is how mine are. Tough luck then I think this bush may have to go.

I haven't heard of them getting out of hand the way bamboo does--I'd guess they are easier to control? I have another cultivar of Disporum longistylum ('Night Heron' I believe) and it's
nowhere near that size and it actually struggles a bit where I've got it. But from your photo I am guessing you have a more persistently moist location than I do and that makes a big difference.
