I'm happy to say I've been writing some folktales, and it has been a nice experience. I've got one called "Why the Fog Comes at Night", and another called "Why Trillium Lives Among the Redwoods".

They've been so much fun to create. Choosing to write stories in the forms of folktales grants a massive margin for error. Folktales can sometimes be stilted and declamatory, and for new writers that's not a bad characteristic. I feel less pressure to create "smooth prose" and "character development" and "plots that make sense". If I were writing a novel... ooh, boy, I'd be sunk.

But these bite-sized short stories haven't resulted int he nightmare I was told writing could bring on. It has been a relief to start small and build in increments.

And I'm also realizing that the three pieces of art I've made with these characters in mind are deeply •mine• in ways that some of my other works in the past haven't been. I've enjoyed the making of these pieces, and the thought put into them, very differently than I enjoy the birds I paint.

I could get used to this. I could very much get used to this.

I just got voted into the longest running artist coop gallery in Humboldt County.

As a digital artist, this is HUGE. Especially in today's world with artificially generated imagery it's not always easy to trust digital art.

But this is a HUGE step for me, personally. To be able to say one can find my work in a gallery is nothing to laugh at.

It also means I have to prove I can be the best member-artist I can be. And commit myself.

It's a good space. A good location. And it's only a six-month commitment, so if I realize it's not a good fit I can step away gracefully. I'm committed to membership meetings and doing two days a month as docent in the gallery itself.

I'm ready for this. I've needed this. I'm going to do the best I can.

A very long time ago, I made an piece featuring California Poppies and I feel in love with the flower. The petals are delicate and paper-like, with an almost-translucency I find fascinating.

I finally got around to formatting that work as an11x17" print. And since I'm using a giclée pigment printer now, the piece is actually an archival print.

I'm very proud of it. I do all my work by hand, one stroke at a time, in an app called Procreate on my iPad Pro. I do not use any generative nonsense. #HumanMade

2026-07-24T00:18:04Z

Well, turns out my first experience being invited to apply to an art gallery did not turn out as planned.

I was invited to apply to an artist's coop gallery nearby, and did so. I went through an interview process, and my work advanced to be voted upon by the general membership.

But apparently there were concerns that because I work digitally, my work could be artificially generated. They wondered how much of it was actually mine.

I was invited to apply, but now that membership is saying they don't trust my work is authentic. And if they don't have faith that I do everything by hand, they will never be able to justify it to potential buyers.

I can point them to livestream videos & speed paints, but they won't have those in the moment trying to make a sale an answer questions.

I got my hopes up that this might be a good fit and a good opportunity. It was implied that they'd like my work. But apparently not enough to squelch their own concerns which they'd have to address themselves when echoed by potential buyers.

I'm... feeling a bit down. I knew there was going to be a "glass ceiling" of sorts, but I naively trusted in this instance. And I should have known better. If it wasn't the artificial thing, it would have been the digital thing I realize now.

<sigh>

Onward.

Today I painted some garlic for a friend whom I vend with at local fairs and festivals. She makes roasted garlic spreads and flavored olive oils. She suggested a garlic greeting card (of course she did!! Ha!), and I made one today.

I like it, and I think it will go nicely with my cherry tomatoes card. My hubby suggested I do a series with Basil and Cheese. Maybe make it a pizza card set. LOL! mmMMmmm, pizza... 🍕

Oy it has been a day already. Ready to go back to bed and try a do-over. Ugh.

But in lieu of that, perhaps I’ll just share a pretty bird I made. It’s a Pileated Woodpecker, which are pretty common here in North America. They’re a powerful bird—they can peck at a rate of 20-25x per second! Wth a force upward of 1200x the force of gravity!

Crazy!!

I don’t have any around my home, lately, so I think it’s probably safe to at least take a nap. Haha!

I swear every day I live in some kind of fantasy fairytale land up here in Eureka, CA along the Redwood Coast in northern California.

This is literally the city park. I mean, deep redwoods, 10 minutes away from everyone’s house. It’s like stepping into another world. I keep expecting to see some Big Bad Wolf step out from behind a giant tree.

That being said, there are indeed bears.

They just don’t talk.

2026-02-19T19:17:52Z

I finished this piece on my livestream earlier this week. It's a Night Heron.

It was suggested to me as a subject by a patron to my booth this last year. They're pretty common here in the area I live because there's a lot of marshes and we're along the Redwood Coast in northern California.

I'd never heard of Night Herons before. In my head, they were creep and scary. But when I finally saw a picture of one, they were the cutest little hunched over things I'd seen! They reminded me of plushie toys for some reason. So cute!

So here in my Night Heron in phone wallpaper form. I do all my work in Procreate on my iPad Pro, and this piece took 3868 strokes of my Apple pencil and 2hr34min to make.

Here's the speedpaint: https://makertube.net/w/rvdZaAbnGYrEnL3NAWqcj3

And here's the greeting card listing on my Goimagine shop (unfortunately I can only do US sales): https://goimagine.com/night-heron-single-bird-greeting-card-5x7-with-envelope/

2026-02-12T02:41:34Z

I’ve always assumed I couldn’t sell my stuff in Europe because of the difficulty managing VAT charges. So I never tried.

And then the tariffs came, and then the US slipped into fascism.

So I doubt I could sell anything in Europe at this point anyway. If things were reversed, I’d be the first to admit I wouldn’t buy from fascist countries if I could help it.

And I know that people are different than their governments, and I’d agree if it was a generational thing where people literally couldn’t enact change for years or decades.

But that’s not the case here in the US… Far far too many people voted for this. And those who didn’t vote at all are just as culpable for simply letting it happen.

So I get it: why would anyone buy anything from me or my country even if they could?

I can only hope that other countries are carefully disentangling themselves as much as they can, and are building cultures of their own that are flourishing in partnerships. ‘Cuz that ain’t gonna happen with the US for a very long while. Or, at least (from what I can tell) not willingly.

One of the best things I can do is keep sharing to brighten my little corner of the internet as much as I can. At least I can share globally doing that (well, at least for now… oy…)

I made this on my stream this week: a Marsh Wren, found here locally where I live. I made a phone wallpaper version for ya.

2026-01-30T05:08:08Z

It is becoming more and more difficult to have hope.

I had a conversation with a fellow artist today. Both of us are finding it challenging to be creative.

For me, it’s a guilt thing. Like, my need to protect my mental health is a cheat. That not witnessing the traumas that come through my feeds is willful blindness and tacit permission. That I’m not being responsible if I don’t subject myself to the cruelty, and instead choose to try to put myself in a good place to create. My empathy is being subverted against me.

I honestly don’t think the US can pull itself out of this anymore. Even if everything is reversed, with trials and sentencing, that dark and selfishly evil movement and its proponents will still be here, creating chaos and undermining progress just as they have for decades.

And I know that state of hopelessness is what they want. They need us to capitulate out of exhaustion, out of self-preservation.

But I can’t make beauty to contradict the cruelty if I don’t look away. I can’t help other hearts flourish if my own heart is constantly being ripped apart.

I’m not sure I know how to navigate this.

No, I don’t believe that either. I know far too many people who believe radical change will inconvenience them and they will get lost in the transitional mess. So they would rather maintain the status quo by tooth and nail, rationalizing however they can so change won’t happen.

There are far too many people—I’m married to one of them—who have stated change is happening too fast, they’re expected to change their mental mindset too much, and people can’t keep up and that scares them.

So no, I do believe people are scared of radical change. Everyone I know is scared of the ripple effects and the long sifting out toward stability. It inconveniences them and vexes them, and while they know it’s good they want instant gratification, complete and easy solutions, and guarantees of safety without effort.

2026-01-15T18:11:15Z

I feel like today in the US, everyone is collectively holding their breath after the events in Minneapolis last night, and by extension the world stage. Like the line between real and surreal has finally started breaking down for most people.

I saw an artist on another platform say it feels stupid to draw through the end of the world. And another said he finally understood what those musicians on the Titanic felt.

It seems clear that some people are feeling it’s really challenging for them to maintain a sense of relevance, and by extension hope. There is a desperate need to “present normalcy” somehow.

I know I’m feeling that way.

And I’ve sort of “preached” that one can’t let them take away one’s joy, and that making art literally is an act of defiance. But somehow, today especially, it’s really hard to remind myself of that. There’s this universal existential “pause” happening, like the quiet before the storm. It’s palpable.

Breath. Breath. Breath.

2026-01-15T00:50:25Z

Whew! Serious work happening today on the back-end of all my stuff!

I got a blog entry done, a speedpaint video made and posted, a new greeting card listing created, a newsletter released, and a conversation started about how my storefront marketplace has gone very very quiet in recent months.

It has been a day!

But WOW does it feel good to have accomplished all that stuff! Because life sucks right now and I have to make sure I celebrate the successes, you know? It is imperative that we make things to contradict all the bad, okay? Doing these things today gives me confidence to keep making room to do more. It means I can do it. Not everything in life has to be a dark pit of despair.

So today I share a California Condor—the first bird I’ve actually done that has been *in flight*, with wings extended. I think I have thing with wings, so this was a big step for me. LOL!

2026-01-07T22:42:51Z

Okay, I’m… fried. I have to turn my attention to more optimistic and hopeful things I should be doing so I can undermine and counteract all the horrible atrocities happening lately.

So I’m off to work on getting things listed on my wholesale site, so maybe my art can reach folks I can’t, and maybe they’ll feel a little bit of positivity and connection with others as they write pretty greeting cards.

So much that is happening is indefensible. And calling them out is just the beginning. So, in the face of that, I have to be proactive in the way only I can be proactive: my art.

Every act of hope is one of defiance. My acts aren’t the kind one can wield in overt ways. But unless we connect the dots for others and create a direct line of purpose from creator to creation, the point can sometimes be lost. My art is my defiance.

And maybe I’ll work on making some more obvious pieces. But for right now, I think we’ve lost our capacity to be empathetic, gentle, and respectful of each other. Power is not everything, much to the chagrin of most of our oligarchic authority figures.

Hope and dignity are small, and they’re the fuel for everything else.

Here’s a phone wallpaper to brighten your day.

So perhaps we need to celebrate the artist-owned IP that isn’t controlled by Disney or WB or some other big corpo machine.

It might be nice to spread the word about comics and animators who do it on their own?

Anyone care to share? Because I, for one, could stand a bit more indie projects in my life. And I know it’s hard to do your own stuff and put food on the table, so it’s often a matter of choosing one or the other.

But still, it would be nice to have a thread of creative makers trying to do their own thing.

When you use an artificially generated image to promote your stuff, I can’t help but think you’re artificially generating everything else.

If you can’t be authentic with your promotional materials, I can’t trust that your actually authentic.

Those tools are hollow. *YOU* come across as hollow for using them. It doesn’t matter what your justifications are, your budgets, or how desperate you are. Because we all know how the sausage is made at this point, and we all know it’s a *choice* to use it or not. No one is twisting your arm.

No one is forcing you to boost posts that use it. No one is threatening your re-posting auto-bot with ultimatums. Only people with their heads under rocks at this point think your crazy amalgamation with too much contrast and big eyes is actually worth the cost of its “cute factor”.

Just stop. It’s not that hard.

2025-11-06T22:26:33Z

Tomorrow officially starts the holiday season for me as I participate for the first time in a high-end holiday market here in Humboldt County, California. It’s a curated show, and all the vendors are expected to sort of set up little “storefronts” for their booths. I went to their Mother’s Day fair, and it was like walking through an industry expo… I was a bit taken aback.

People bring in lounge chairs, kitchen tables, and sofas.

And apparently, we get six hours to set up. Six. Hours.

I’m hoping my booth measures up. I can’t use my normal tent—they don’t allow canopies for fire legality reasons. So I’m using my old Flourish/Trimline industrial tent’s steel pipe structure to invent something new, using the 8’x10’ end-corner space I’ve been assigned. I’ll have two exposed walls, so that’ll be a nice opportunity.

And I’ve got most of my holiday stock ready to go. I just hope I have enough. I can print more at home between the two days, so I should be fine.

Wish me luck!

I wonder if we’re all starting to see the symptoms of the water starting to boil in a myriad of different ways… I think a lot of people want things to keep simmering and hope that slamming down the lid will keep the pot under control.

But the steam’s escaping. And the longer they deny it, the more likely they’ll get burned.

And I sense a lot of folks are willing to put up with almost anything so they can deny the hard work of reconciling reality.

For what it’s worth, I (for one) agree with you. A lot of folks slide at local levels who wouldn’t get away with similar things nationally—not just here but in a lot of places. The scrutiny is different. It just is.

2025-09-12T06:39:19Z

At the moment, my capacity to be creative is the only thing that’s saving my sanity.

So forgive me if I can’t dredge up more umbrage than I’m already feeling. My heart is already on fire, and the only thing that keeps me from completely bursting into flames is the cool quenching of the process of making.

My anger and frustration, driven by fear and disappointment, feel like giants lurking behind my eyes and strangling my throat. It’s all I can do to grasp and hold on to the thin strings of hope and joy being pulled taught and stretched to the point of snapping.

I can’t do any good if I succumb to despair, so forgive me if I sometimes lurch toward what might seem to be willful ignorance and privilege. I’m not trying to bury my head in the sand. But my strength is in my art right now. So I will continue to post it despite the world burning down around me, licking at my shins.

I feel doom. I choose bloom.

2025-07-27T00:16:34Z

I lived in San Diego for 30 years, and attended Comic-Con maybe five times. And that was more than enough for me.

I realized I really really don’t like cons. I won’t bore you with the reasons.

So when I started as an artist, my SDCC experiences influenced my choices: “What can I make digitally that probably wouldn’t fit here?” I didn’t want to do the kind of art I’d seen there.

As a consequence, it has been kinda challenging to find example digital artists who don’t do anime, manga, chibi, comic art, TTRPG art, concept art, fan art, or pixel art. Digital art is so ingrained in commercial illustration and fandom art now, it’s hard to see outside that box.

From my perspective, it seemed that for digital artists, vending at cons was almost a given—an apparent “traditional necessity" in some ways. It was all I knew, all I saw on the internet.

But knowing I wasn’t going to attempt to go down that path was honestly quite freeing. It opened my eyes to a much much wider range of creative options and possibilities for me, personally. I started looking at traditional artists for inspiration. And it was helpful.

Nowadays I’m sure I’ll never become a vendor at the larger, more popular conventions. I’m okay with that—I’m not applying! Ha! For me and for my needs, I can do without. And I’ve only ever done one piece of fan art (which, not surprisingly, doesn’t look anything like a traditional piece of fan art). So I’m good.

A long time ago, I was doing landscapes. I focused on waterfalls, and fell in love with the green and the water.

I used what I learned making these to do more projects, including a landscape calendar (of sorts) in 2023.

Every time I look at these, I remember the calm I experienced making them. And perhaps that’s part of why I’m so happy amongst the trees here behind the #RedwoodCurtain.

Today, I listed my second pack pf fairy tale greeting cards on my Goimagine Art Shop.

https://goimagine.com/art-nouveau-fairytale-variety-pack-greeting-cards-2-5x7-with-envelopes/

This set is the next iteration in my style journey, and I think the cards in it are some of my best work.

The tales include (left to right, top to bottom in the photo): The Lion and the Mouse, The Frog Princess, The Three Little Pigs, The Ugly Duckling, Rapunzel, and The Tortoise and the Hare.

They’re all Human-Made. I paint, print, package, and post them all myself from my own studio. I don’t use any artificial generative nonsense.

2025-05-15T18:21:44Z

Today, I’m sharing a new card on my shop: a Bluethroat. These birds are found in Europe all the way across the Palearctic to Alaska.

I had an older version included in literally *the* first pack of bird greeting cards I’d ever made, but this new update is now available as an individual card.

https://goimagine.com/bluethroat-single-bird-greeting-card-5x7-with-envelope/

BUT—here’s a new feature—I finally set up my art shop to enable folks to select six cards and get one of those cards free. So essentially, you can design your own packs of single cards (from the 130 in my shop) and pay less.

Now I know—“Six greeting cards for $30?! That’s cray cray! I can get them so much cheaper somewhere else!” Yep. You can.

But these are painted, printed, packed, and posted by me (the artist) personally. These are Human-Made cards with Human-Made art, done by an independent artist keenly interested in helping people make connections with each other.

For me, this is more than sales or profit margins or giant corporations riding trends and hokey celebrity meme cards. I could do the lowest common denominator and make more money with stolen generated image schlock.

This is not that.

And these cards are not for folks who can’t tell or don’t care about the difference.

Where the art comes from that you share with others matters.

Essentially, Select Six & Get One of them Free.

And it does it automatically—no code, no coupon, nothing to remember.

I have officially put my very first art print up for sale on my Goimagine Art shop.

https://goimagine.com/the-frog-prince-11x17-limited-edition-print/

I’m sticking with a 11x17” size and that’s it, because my work looks a lot better when it’s bigger. Turns out a lot more of the detailed texture and subtle coloring shifts are visible when things aren’t microscopic! Ha!

I decided my prints will all be limited editions of 30, signed & numbered on the back, and include a certificate of authenticity. Plus they'll be printed by me, personally, in my own studio, full-bleed at 400dpi on my fancy-schmancy 8-color printer. So I can quality check!

I had made some of my birds available on my Etsy shop a very long time ago through their Printful integration, but I could never really be sure they were bright enough and clear enough… I had no idea what my customer was getting. And so having prints drop-shipped through someone else has always worried me.

In the end, it’s simply another way of making my artwork available and special for the collector. I’m not really doing traditional art yet, so this is the next best thing for me to offer.

Ultimately, I’m just really happy with how they’re looking so far, and truly proud to finally offer them!

Anyone like Bullfinches? I’ve never seen one in person, but I think they’re lovely!

They’re a bird that can be found all the way from Europe through China to the Pacific Ocean. They’re little orange/coral bellies are so cute!

I made an art stationery paper pack for those who might be interested in getting offline and connecting with others through the mail. It comes in lined and unlined versions.

It also has these cool cut-and-glue envelopes printed on sheets that you can assemble yourself. I think they’re really cool!

https://goimagine.com/illustrated-bullfinch-stationery-paper-pack-8-5x11-lined-and-unlined/

The art is Human-Made using Procreate. I did it myself, without some machine “generating inspiration” for me. I used my brain and my hands. I’m proud of that. I hope it’s a feature you’re interested in supporting.

Do yourself a favor and make some tea, sit down at a comfy table or desk, put on some soft music, grab a pen, and indulge in the centuries-old practice of writing letters. Without a screen. Without a keyboard.

And Mother’s Day is coming up. So…

https://goimagine.com/illustrated-california-scrub-jay-stationery-paper-pack-8-5x11-lined-and-unlined/

2025-05-02T06:32:01Z

So today, a group of elementary school children paraded through my neighborhood. I knew they were there because they were quite loud and energetic, and honestly I was very confused about what was happening. I mean, what on earth kind of field trip are they doing, wandering around from house to house?

I tried to see what they were up to, and I couldn’t really tell.

But after they’d passed, my husband opened the door to our back porch because it was a lovely day and the sun was out. And hanging on the doorknob was a handcrafted paper plate basket of paper flowers.

And it struck me—they were celebrating May Day.

And I got a surge of nostalgia. Growing up in the midwest of the US, my family celebrated the first of May as a sort of polar opposite to Halloween. We’d make paper cups and fill them with flowers and candy, deliver them secretly to the neighbors we loved, and run away quickly before they discovered them. No notes. No indication of where they came from or whom they came from.

And here, in Eureka, CA, 40 years later, was an entire elementary school class doing it as an organized activity.

I took that paper basket, and I put it on a hook on my refrigerator, to remind me of a different kind of sustenance than food.

Caring for others with no expectations.

I really really hope that elementary school class teacher knows how much they touched me. Because they restored a bit of my faith in humanity today.

2024-11-18T20:09:05Z

Here's last year's #FolktaleWeek images, as well as this year's first entry for the new one.

Last year's words were Lost, Ink, Sea, Sleep, Underground, Illusion, and Found.

I incorporated them into an adaptation of Little Red Riding Hood I'm still developing in my head. Lots of great story twists and turns, and it was really useful.

This year, for #FolktaleWeek2024, I'm using the new prompt words to create background imagery to place underneath text. I'm happy with how they're turning out.

I probably won't be able to complete all seven new words by the end of the week, but since it's primarily an Instagram challenge to drive traffic to specific host accounts (and I left Instagram a long time ago) I'm not worried about deadlines. I took my own sweet time last year, and will do so this year, too.

So here's a phone wallpaper version of "Mist," originally for a page of text.

Every day I'm reminded why I keep posting to Mastodon.

#3GoodThings

1) I found and commented on some really great posts from accounts that I would never have found if I hadn't opened myself up to pay specific attention to what was in front of me.

2) I watched some great videos from folks touring and living in the Humboldt Co. area of CA, where I may be moving. And they're authentic as hell. LOVE what I found!

3) My husband proved to me once again that I am profoundly lucky he came into my life and that we are each stronger together than we ever could have been apart.

These are very good things indeed.

Couldn't sleep again last night. So I got up in the wee hours and drew spontaneously on my livestream again.

This is a version of Little Red inspired by Rennie Mackintosh.

I'm going to continue to explore the work of the Glasgow Four and refine what I'm doing with a more precision.

I'm really enjoying playing. There's something very freeing when the process you're doing isn't about replicating a reference image. LOL!

2024-11-08T04:23:43Z

Last night's explorations of Frances MacDonald & the Glasgow Style were very soothing to my mind. I' did a quick "Quiet Stream" without vid & mic at 3:00am--only music. I just couldn't sleep. I suspect I'll be doing more of that for a while...

Did some more development of it today. Ended up with this. I'm looking forward to much more exploring--the texture thing combined with art nouveau and symbolism really really appeals to me.

Finished Stephen King's Fairy Tale, and I really enjoyed it.

I'm not a big King fan, but it's not like most of his other works, I think. He has to lean into fantasy world-building a lot. Very visually driven. It's a thing unto itself, I feel, and if you like fairy tale tropes and character-driven stories this'll appeal to you. I do, so it clicked for me! It's half Oz/Wonderland, half Stand by Me.

And it was a great audiobook listen!! Seth Numrich!! I recommend it!

I lived in Tacoma for about a year, and I will never ever forget the crystal sharp partly sunny skies, being surrounded by rich verdant greens, and the looming Mount Rainier that seemed so much closer than it was...

It was one of the most lovely places I've ever been.

I didn't get into the east side of the state, but you capture it gorgeously. I love seeing what you post here! Thank you SO MUCH for sharing it here!

My 2025 art calendar is finally done! I'm really happy with it--I have more of a personal connection to it than any of my past art calendars. It's a recording of family heirlooms.

And it's the smallest I've made: 7x10". It's nice for cubicles and alcoves!

Most of the images I've already shared here on Mastodon as phone wallpapers, but it comes with a QR code to access all of them in one place.
