Lately I have been spending more time with old technology than new technology. I am building a BBS on an old netbook and trying to turn a regular USB stick into a bootable environment for my Nostr signer. Both projects have taught me something. Sometimes the simplest ideas are the hardest to get working properly. Modern technology makes so many things easier. But working with older systems reminds me how much we can still learn from them. And strangely enough I am enjoying the problems almost as much as the progress.

I don't know if I am getting old but old technology and software have been catching my attention more than ever lately. Or maybe I am just trying to find a little piece of my younger days again. 😊

What about you? What have you been working on lately? Do you ever find yourself going back to old technology just for the nostalgia?

#nostr #oldtech #retrocomputing #linux #bbs #opensource

As you said it doesn't need a battery or an internet connection. But I think people are starting to forget the value of keeping things on paper as technology advances.

SkySigner has been giving me quite a few headaches lately. 😊

Every time I fix one problem another one seems to appear. Sometimes it gets frustrating but today I finally felt like I was getting a little closer to my goal.

Seeing SkySigner USB OS v0.3 reach the vault creation screen on my old netbook made me genuinely happy.

There is still a lot to test and fix. But after all those errors and failed attempts even a small step forward feels like a big achievement.

I am not giving up on this project. 😊

#Nostr #SkySigner #Linux #OpenSource #BuildInPublic

This gives me a few new things to check. I had not considered that vault creation itself might be pushing the old netbook to its limits.

I will check whether my vault creation process actually uses LUKS2 and Argon2id before trying the memory setting. Testing without toram and checking the kernel logs also sounds like a good way to narrow things down.

The username=skysigner suggestion is especially interesting because I have been struggling with that automatic login error.

I have spent quite a bit of time trying to get this USB OS working. Sometimes I fix one problem and another appears.

And don't worry about your English. My English isn't perfect either but I understand you just fine :D Thanks again for helping me figure this out.

It sounds very close to what I am trying to achieve with SkySigner USB OS. I will definitely study how it handles USB removal and memory erasure.

The startup problems are a little different from UEFI or Secure Boot issues. I managed to boot the Debian-based USB system and even reached the vault creation screen. But then the computer unexpectedly shut down.

In another test I encountered an automatic login authentication failure for the skysigner user. I have been trying to diagnose these issues before moving on to the USB removal and memory protection features.

I also experimented with loading the OS into RAM using toram but I have not managed to get everything working reliably yet.

Your suggestions about LUKS and keeping the system read-only are useful. I also had not considered the risk of corrupting the vault when unplugging the USB during a write.

For now I am testing on an old netbook with limited hardware. My goal is to eventually make it work on different computers without requiring any installation on the host.

I really appreciate the detailed suggestions.

The reverse SSH tunnel and separate SSH service approach makes more sense to me now. I also had no idea Oracle offered a free VPS option so I will look into that.

There is one thing I noticed though. My antiX setup does not use systemd so those sandboxing directives would not work directly. I would need to find an equivalent solution.

I also noticed that OpenSSH's restrict option disables port forwarding by default so I think port-forwarding would need to be explicitly allowed alongside permitlisten.

I am still cautious about exposing my netbook because I use it for other projects too. But your suggestions have given me a lot to research. Thank you again for putting so much thought into this.

I have been jumping between a few different things lately.

On one side I am trying to finish the remaining work on SkyLordsLab BBS. There is not much left to fix now. On the other side I am working on getting my Nostr signer SkySigner to run from a USB drive with its own bootable operating system.

Whenever I get stuck or feel overwhelmed with these projects I usually take a break and play some games.

Recently I was invited to test a game and I happily accepted. It had a nostalgic feel that reminded me of the games I used to play years ago. The timing was perfect too. I was already spending so much time working on a retro BBS and suddenly I had another nostalgic experience waiting for me .

Today I finally reached the end of the game I was testing. But the ending completely caught me off guard. I really did not expect that Game Over.

And there was another nice surprise. I was invited to the second round of testing. I am genuinely happy to have another chance to play it and see how it develops.

I will keep the name and details of the game to myself for now. I just wanted to share a little bit of what I have been doing lately.

Sometimes taking a break from one project leads you straight into another interesting experience.

Have you ever played a game that surprised you with its ending?

#nostr #asknostr #game #gaming #gametesting #indiegame #retrogaming #nostalgia #bbs #linux #programming #buildinpublic

I had already thought about giving each stone a unique ID so its information and history could follow it when it changes hands. But I had not really explored how Nostr events and signatures could handle that part.

Using Blossom for photos and NIP-99 for trade listings also sounds worth looking into. I still have a lot to learn about how all of that would work together.

I have collected stones from different parts of Türkiye over the years so I could start by sharing a few of them with their stories and see whether anyone is interested.

Maybe I really should take this project off the shelf again.

I appreciate that you considered antiX and the fact that I want to preserve the terminal experience.

The reverse SSH tunnel approach is interesting because it would let my netbook initiate the connection without opening ports on my home router. Running a separate SSH service just for the BBS also makes sense.

My concern is still security though. Even with a reverse tunnel the public VPS would have a connection path to my netbook. If the VPS gets compromised or the BBS has a vulnerability then my other projects and potentially my home network could still be at risk.

There is also the VPS cost. I am trying to find a solution that does not require additional spending.

But I really appreciate the detailed explanation. I am adding this approach to my research list. I would rather spend more time understanding the risks than rush into publishing the BBS.😀

My idea is a little different from simply running a portable SkySigner binary from a USB drive. I am building a bootable SkySigner USB OS so the computer starts in a separate environment instead of using the host operating system.

SkySigner already supports NIP-07 and NIP-46. I want to keep both options available in the USB version rather than limiting it to local signing.

The goal is to keep the encrypted vault on the USB drive and require a password for signing permissions. I am also working on what happens when the USB drive is removed. The signer should stop and sensitive information should not remain accessible in RAM.

I have already managed to boot the system but I am still dealing with some startup problems. So right now I am trying to get the basic USB OS working properly before moving on to more security tests.

I know an ordinary USB drive cannot offer the same protection as a dedicated hardware signer. But I want to see how far I can take SkySigner with hardware people already have at home.

I like that it would preserve the terminal experience while keeping my home IP address out of public view.

But I still have some security concerns. Even if the VPS handles public connections the WireGuard tunnel would still create a path to my antiX netbook. If the VPS gets compromised or something is misconfigured then my home network and the other projects running on the netbook could still be at risk.

I also do not have a budget for additional hosting costs right now. That is another reason I am looking for alternatives.

I have spent quite a bit of time building SkyLordsLab BBS and I would love to let people try it. But I do not want to put my other projects or home network at risk just to make it public. Your suggestion is definitely worth researching though. Thanks for explaining it.

I wish you continued success with the project.

But I think you misunderstood what I meant by availability. I was not saying that you simply found a device somewhere. You actually designed and built it from scratch and that is impressive.

What I meant is that you have access to the electronic components and hardware needed to build something like this. Here in Türkiye many of these components have to be imported and even then some are difficult to find.

So building something similar to what you have made is not always a realistic option for us. Even if I wanted to buy your finished product I would first have to find a way to import it.

For example I have been wanting to buy a hardware wallet but Ledger is practically my only accessible option at the moment.

That is why I started thinking about SkySigner USB OS. I wanted to explore whether someone who cannot easily obtain specialized hardware could build a useful signing solution with something as common as a USB flash drive.

That is the question I am trying to answer. Not whether a USB drive can replace a properly designed hardware signer in terms of security but whether we can create something useful with the hardware we already have.

When they first use it a vault setup screen appears where they can create and configure their encrypted vault.

The vault and its data stay on that specific USB drive. Once configured the USB drive becomes the key to accessing it.

I want the OS to keep running even if the USB drive is removed. But removing the drive should immediately lock the vault and disconnect all signing sessions. When the drive is inserted again the vault should become available only after entering the password.

Just like my existing SkySigner application I also want password confirmation for every signing permission request.

I am also trying to find a solution to prevent SkySigner USB OS or the vault information from continuing to run or remain accessible in RAM after the USB drive is removed. At the same time I am working on making sure everything functions properly again when the USB drive is reinserted.

The goal is to create a portable signing environment using hardware people already own rather than requiring them to buy a dedicated device.

That is what I am trying to build. There are still technical and security challenges to solve but I am continuing to experiment with it. 😀

I already have an old netbook running antiX Linux but I use it for several other projects too. For SkySigner I wanted to create a separate bootable USB OS so I could experiment with a more isolated environment without buying new hardware. I managed to build the system and boot from the USB drive but it currently shuts down shortly after starting. That is the problem I am working on now :D Your approach of keeping the bunker locked until manually unlocked is also something I want to look into.

I am especially interested in the ESP32 projects you mentioned and will take a closer look at them. The NIP-49 suggestion is worth investigating too. For now I am trying to understand what security improvements I can realistically achieve with the hardware I already have rather than buying another device.

I have another question about SkySigner.

For those who have not heard of it before. SkySigner is a Nostr signer I have been developing. The idea is to let Nostr clients and websites request signatures without giving them direct access to the private key. I have been experimenting with NIP-07 and NIP-46 and testing compatibility with different clients.

Now I have another idea.

What if I moved SkySigner onto a USB drive and turned it into a portable Nostr signing device?

I am wondering if it would be possible to plug the USB drive into a computer and use SkySigner to approve signing requests while keeping the private key isolated from the applications requesting signatures.

Of course a regular USB drive is not the same as a hardware wallet. I am aware that security would be one of the biggest challenges.

But could something like this work? Would a bootable USB environment be a better approach than simply running the application from a USB drive?

Has anyone here experimented with something similar for Nostr?

I am curious about both the technical possibilities and the security limitations.

#asknostr #nostr #skysigner #nip07 #nip46 #bitcoin #cryptography #opensource #programming #linux #buildinpublic

I think my old antiX netbook is going to be busy for a while.

I have quite a few things planned for SkyLordsLab BBS. Right now I am researching how to integrate Finger and .plan into the existing user profile system. I also want to keep improving the ASCII and ANSI games and make Dungeon 8 more interesting with a world that remembers what players have done.

The internal mail system is working but receiving and sending emails through external services is still something I need to figure out. I am also interested in exploring FidoNet and Echomail to understand how different BBS systems used to communicate with each other.

And of course there is still the question of how to make the BBS publicly accessible without putting my home network at risk.

Several people have already suggested different solutions and I appreciate all the help. But there is something I want to clarify. SkyLordsLab BBS is a terminal based system. Some of the suggested solutions focus on making it accessible through a web browser. My concern is that if I go too far in that direction then what makes it different from an ordinary website? I want to preserve the traditional terminal experience while finding a secure way for people to connect over the internet.

That is why I am still looking for other safe methods rather than rushing to make it public.

I started this as a small personal project and somehow the list of things I want to build keeps getting longer :D

If you were building a BBS today what feature would you focus on first? And how would you make a traditional terminal BBS safely accessible over the internet?

#asknostr #bbs #doorgames #ascii #ansi #retrocomputing #linux #antix #programming #opensource #selfhosting #buildinpublic

Another small update from SkyLordsLab BBS.

The Netmail idea turned out to be simpler than I initially thought. I already had a working private messaging system inside the BBS. So I added a personal mail address for every user and made it possible to send messages using either a nickname or the full mail address.

For example:

skylords@bbs.skylordslab.com

Everything is still working internally. External email integration is something I may work on later.

Now I am thinking about adding Finger and .plan files to SkyLordsLab BBS too. Looking at the existing user profiles and messaging features I think it might not be too difficult to implement something similar. I have started researching how these old systems worked.

I am still learning and experimenting. Every old technology I discover seems to give me another idea for the BBS.

And thanks to Tim (npub13hy…0nt7) for sharing information about Finger and .plan files. But from what I understand people used to create a .plan file where they could write what they were working on or what they had been doing. It sounds more like a personal status update or a small public diary rather than persistent memory like your .md files. I am still learning about it too. 😀

Another small update from SkyLordsLab BBS.

A few days ago I received some interesting suggestions about FidoNet and Netmail. The idea of sending private messages between users on different BBS systems caught my attention.

SkyLordsLab BBS already had its own private mail and messaging system. But those suggestions made me think about taking it a little further.

So I started working on a Netmail-inspired system.

Now every user automatically gets their own address based on their nickname.

For example:

skylords@bbs.skylordslab.com

Inside the BBS you can send messages using either the recipient's nickname or their full BBS mail address. I tested this between two different user accounts and it works.

I also started preparing the system to receive emails from outside services like Gmail and Outlook. External senders will need to use the full nickname@bbs.skylordslab.com address.

But there is one important detail. **Receiving external emails is not working yet.** I have not integrated that part of the system. For now the addresses and private messaging work internally within SkyLordsLab BBS.

Once I figure out the external mail integration I hope to make it possible for someone to send an email from Gmail or Outlook directly to a BBS user.

It is funny how a simple suggestion about an old technology can lead to another feature in a project.

Thanks to the person who suggested Netmail and FidoNet. You helped me take SkyLordsLab BBS in another interesting direction.

Has anyone here tried connecting a BBS messaging system to regular email services?

#nostr #bbs #netmail #fidonet #retrocomputing #linux #antix #programming #opensource #selfhosting #buildinpublic

If I can experiment with Gemini and Gopher without dealing with my ISP or opening ports at home then that would make things much easier. I will take a closer look at tilde.team and its documentation. I am also curious whether something like this could eventually help with SkyLordsLab BBS. Thanks for pointing me in this direction .

I agree that encryption and security are improvements we should not give up just for simplicity. What interests me is how some older systems managed to do useful things with so few resources. I have already started exploring Gopher and I am planning to look into FidoNet and Finger as well. My old antiX netbook is turning into a little laboratory for forgotten internet technologies.

I actually tried the Gemini protocol before and even built a few things with it myself. I was experimenting with it for a while but eventually put the project on hold because I ran into issues with static IP and DNS configuration. I do not really want to deal with my internet service provider over that right now. So I took a break from testing and trying to make it publicly accessible. But Gemini is definitely not new to me. I have already spent some time experimenting with it. 😀

The more I explore old internet technologies the more I realize how many interesting ideas existed long before modern social networks.

Over the past few days people here on Nostr have introduced me to systems like Gopher, FidoNet, Finger, emule and its kad network and .plan files.

I started with a simple question about what I could do with my old Linux netbook. Somehow I ended up with a growing list of things to research.

What I find interesting is that some of these old systems already had solutions to problems we are still discussing today.

So here is another question.

Do you think modern software has actually improved everything? I have been focusing mostly on the games and interface of SkyLordsLab BBS. I never really thought about how old BBS systems communicated with each other. The idea of exchanging messages between independent nodes without requiring a constant connection sounds fascinating. Especially since I am still trying to figure out how to make my BBS accessible without exposing my home network to unnecessary risks. I would definitely like to experiment with FidoNet on my antiX netbook. Is there a lightweight Echomail tosser you would recommend for Linux? And would it be possible to test this between two BBS systems without making either one publicly accessible?

Lately I have been spending a lot of time exploring old software and technologies on my Linux netbook. Working on SkyLordsLab BBS made me realize how many interesting things from the early internet have been forgotten.

We have modern applications for almost everything now. But I wonder how many old ideas were actually good and simply got left behind.

So here is my question.

What is one forgotten internet technology or old piece of software that you think deserves a second chance?

It could be an old protocol. A forgotten application. A strange communication system. Or something most people have never even heard of.

I am looking for something unusual to explore. Maybe I will even try bringing one of those ideas back to life on my old antiX netbook

#asknostr #linux #retrocomputing #oldinternet #opensource #programming #selfhosting #buildinpublic

I thought about the old diskmag / e-zine style digital magazines that used to be shared on floppy disks and wondered why I should not add something like that to my own BBS. So I did. I added SkyMag to SkyLordsLab BBS and prepared the first issue. It feels a bit like a diary and a bit like a small retro magazine at the same time. If I can keep up with it I want to continue it weekly or monthly depending on time. I really like the idea of slowly building a little BBS magazine archive inside the project itself.

What do you think about the idea of a diskmag / e-zine inside a BBS?

#asknostr #nostr #bbs #retrobbs #retrocomputing #antix #linux #programming #coding #opensource #buildinpublic #indiedev #terminal #textmode #ansi #diskmag #tech #mag

A while ago npub180cvv07tjdrrgpa0j7j7tmnyl2yr6yr7l8j4s3evf6u64th6gkwsyjh6w6 raised concerns about how traceable Bitcoin can be.

Today I came across a case that made me think about that again. Richard James Schueller was reportedly detained in Istanbul after being sought internationally by Finland. Reports say investigators followed digital footprints and suspicious crypto wallet movements on the blockchain while tracing him.

In a case like this traceability sounds useful. If someone is accused of large scale fraud then following the money can help investigators and maybe help victims recover something.

But what about ordinary people sending small amounts to each other? At that point the same traceability can start to feel like a privacy problem.

This also made me think again about Monero and privacy focused systems. Not because Monero was involved in this case. It was not. But because the contrast is interesting. So I am genuinely curious.

Is financial traceability a feature or a problem?

Maybe the answer depends entirely on who is being traced and why.

#bitcoin #privacy #monero #asknostr #cryptocurrency

I am not even sure what I have been doing lately. I keep jumping from one thing to another. I am learning Moggi and trying small programs with it. I am still improving SkyLordsLab BBS and adding more text based games. I am also trying to figure out how to publish the BBS safely without exposing my home network. On top of that I keep digging through GitHub looking for old projects and ideas that might be useful for the BBS. Somehow the old antiX netbook keeps becoming the center of all these experiments. If a client gives the impression that something has been fully deleted when it may still exist on other relays then that can easily mislead users. I think clients should be very clear about what “delete” actually means on Nostr and whether it is only a local action or a deletion request that other relays may or may not honor.

I have the same problem. Sometimes I see certain replies on Nostrich. Some appear on Nostria. Others only show up on Primal or YakiHonne. After a while it gets confusing because you stop knowing which app you need to check to see the whole conversation. I think new users will notice this very quickly too. They will not think about relay differences. They will just wonder why one app shows something and another one does not. And I agree about languages too. If global posts could be filtered or translated into languages I understand that would make discovery much better.

I think some of the work around new relays and filtering is trying to improve that side of Nostr. But I think there is another problem that matters just as much. Nostr needs to feel consistent across clients. If I post something on Nostrich I should be able to open Primal or Nostr.app or Ditto and see the same post there. If I delete a comment I should expect it to disappear everywhere instead of wondering which relay or client still has it. Most new users will not care why a relay did not receive an event or why a deletion request was ignored. They will simply think the app is broken. I also do not think most people will join because we tell them Nostr is decentralized. They need a reason to stay. I would make Nostr almost invisible at first. Let people find communities around things they already enjoy. Make onboarding and key backup simple. Let them discover relays and Lightning later. The bold idea for me is to stop selling Nostr as a protocol and start building things people would want even if they had never heard the word Nostr before. Then make the experience between clients reliable enough that they do not need to understand the protocol just to use it.

My concern is not the connection itself. The problem is that this would be running from my own home network. If I open the BBS directly to the internet then I am also exposing a device on that network to anyone who wants to scan or attack it. That is what makes me hesitant. The BBS itself is one thing but the same netbook and network are also used for other projects. So I am trying to avoid turning it into an easy target just by forwarding a port.

Meet **SkyLordsLab BBS**.

I'm trying to bring back the old bulletin board experience with ANSI colors and a classic terminal interface. Message boards. Guestbook. File archive. Door games. English and Turkish support.

I'm building and testing it on my old netbook running antiX Linux. It is still a work in progress and there are things I need to fix but seeing that old BBS interface come to life is pretty satisfying.

Did anyone here actually use BBS systems back in the day? Or is anyone still running one today?

#nostr #bbs #retcomputing #retrocomputing #linux #antix #buildinpublic #opensource

I have been researching what I can build on Linux lately. Most of the usual ideas keep coming up again and again so I am starting to think I should just build something a little crazy instead :D One idea I like is turning an old Linux machine into a small offline internet node with things like local websites a Nostr relay Kiwix file sharing and maybe even voice chat. Something that can still be useful even when the internet is gone.

What is the strangest or most interesting Linux project you would build if you had an old machine sitting around?

#asknostr #linux #selfhosting #homelab #opensource #buildinpublic

Has anyone here seen the recent Vinicius Junior lookalike theory? I came across it and now I am strangely curious about how this whole thing started. Some posts claim that he disappeared after the World Cup and was replaced by a double because his appearance changed. From what I can find there is no evidence for that and reports say he had a cosmetic procedure during his holiday. Still I am really curious about how this theory spread so quickly. Did anyone follow this from the beginning? Where did it actually start?

#football #viniciusjr #asknostr
