He did a lot of photos from the window washing rigs. (There is a book that I should buy.) His images are the ones used for the remembrance exhibits.

In our State Fair project (multimedia show inside one of the prototype geodesic domes), we erected huge scaffolding towers to project onto the air supported interior membrane. Charles was fearless in troubleshooting the projectors mounted near the top of the dome. I don't think I'd be so sanguine on a high rise window wash rig.

September 23 in the #WillametteValley, tomato harvest from 4 plants. My opinion is that the two Russian heirloom tomatoes, "Brown Sugar" and "Bread and Salt" are spectacular varieties for this climate. I planted 2 of the "Moneymaker" variety from a local nursery, and they produce similar fruit to "Early Girl", but mature earlier, produce more fruit, and fruit longer. It's been a good year for tomatoes. I've saved seeds from the Russian heirlooms.

We have a roll around AC unit with flexible duct to cool just a portion of the house (the Bernese Mountain Dog can't take the heat). We've used it about 5 days this summer. We're in the PNW, Willamette Valley. Not many homes here are equipped with whole house AC. It can be a very economical option.

We love our bees; bumble bees, blue orchard bees, mason bees. We have so many, with 4 pollinator patches on the north, gentle north facing slopes, Mason Bee houses on the garage, a stack of drying Port Orford Cedar by the garden beds that they have colonized, & many fruit trees.

We started learning about them when we planted fruit trees that were not bearing much fruit. Now, we have bumper crops. Honey bees are not active early enough to pollinate our fruit trees.

There are several factors that prevent "building our way out" of this problem. Loss of existing housing through conversion to short term rentals, private equity acquiring large stocks of existing housing (with higher rents), collusion from property managers using the same "software", high cost of construction, NIMBYs, single family exclusionary zoning. Oregon has abolished exclusive single family zoning, permits infill multifamily & ADUs, and has abolished minimum parking requirements.

Exactly. I no longer live in that community, but they are now into about the 20th year of that 5 year county wide plan. So much of the money appropriated, contributed, and spent on "housing" goes to supporting those thinking about and administering programs & services instead of building housing.

I did have some successes as a councilmember, though. The community also did something right by very strictly limiting vacation (short term) rentals, eliminating that loss of existing housing.

Some years ago I attended a local affordable housing meeting - before I was a city planning commissioner or elected council member. It was in the 10th year or so of a 5 year plan to eliminate homelessness. The room was full of city & county staff, non-profit executives & representatives, hospital administrators, non-profit housing developers, etc. I was the only person present who was not a paid mid or high level salaried employee. The whole system was a middle class make work program.

Looking closely, there are sometimes remnants of the parging material on the face of the masonry or at the base of the wall.

I designed a winery in Napa using entirely passive heat & cooling. Super insulated walls, ventilation ports low on the prevailing wind wall, temperature activated fans on the upper gable end. We also used an alternative winery waste disposal system with emitters at the roots of a grove of redwood trees instead of a typical leach field.
