I liked The Matrix 3 when it came out, but it's just really hard to get around the fact they had a super compressed schedule (2 and 3 were the *same year!*) and *two* of their key actresses died. Windows 11 sets the default documents folder to onedrive\documents. Anything that gets saved there gets backed up to one drive. This includes various save games, all my Reaper stuff, and various other odds and ends that I like to, you know, save.

To save disc space, OneDrive also defaults to files being online-only. They're not stored on your device, they're just listed there. So despite what they call it, this is in fact not a backup at all, because it doesn't create an extra copy. It is actually just transferring your most precious, irreplacible, personal files to Microsoft in the background, and trusting that nothing will happen. You can see where this is going, but just to underline the point with a bleeding fucking dagger, I did not ask for any of this, I just clicked save like I have done for the last twenty or so years of my life using Windows.

Since I don't care about and have never intentionally used onedrive, I signed out of it. Flash forward six months, the files that I thought were on my computer (because I can go see them there in the folder) are in fact gone from my hard drive, and also Onedrive nuked them from orbit.

Years of my life, gone without a trace. Thanks so much, Microsoft. Whoever came up with all those ideas probably got massive performance bonuses, because we're in the worst timeline.

Nobody asked, but having now done some work in the WAST/WAT/Wasm Textual format, here's how I would change it if I got the opportunity:

- Keep the S-expression structure, but stop pretending it's "a LISP", describe it as the Wasm S-Expression Syntax or something

- Put the operator at the *end*; parenthesis are now *only* hints to the typechecker.

I think what gets missed in Mastodon-clique conversations about GenAI as a copyright-washing tech is, how the new GenAI exception to copyright law applies unequally to different actors. Someone with a big AI-gen corporation on their side can take my open source code and rewrite it "to be MIT licensed" using a chatbot, and they get away with it. So thing is, I can imagine some context where presenting a block if it were a server error, and giving zero feedback to indicate it's a block, is the correct UX because it keeps the user from circumventing.

However, Mastodon is a small-team product, which does testing in prod, in a federated environment where *other* servers can cause glitches, under DOS & spitting 503s for most of this year. And in that context. If I see a server error. *I assume it was a server error*.

And I try to *fix* it.

I believe that at some point in the next ten years, a "brain computer interface" will exist that detects some kind of neuron activity, runs it through a machine learning model, and translates it into LLM agent actions. It won't be anything as clean as "you think a sentence and it types it". It will be something one level lower than "prompting an AI". You do some vague mental thing and it translates into a result on the computer.
