Current research on Extraction: Discussing with a friend why so many laws are inscrutable—they read like diffs. This is a problem because "legibility" (not just transparency) is critical for inclusive institutions.

As it turns out, there's fair amount of research which suggests that many of these illegible laws are deliberately written to conceal who gets to benefit.
